The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 411 - 404: Variables
Chapter 411: Chapter 404: Variables
Gao Yuan quickly arrived at the edge of the battlefield, and then he saw the fight wasn’t as intense as he had expected.
Two tanks were already on fire, but as he looked around, he couldn’t see a single person.
The enemy’s vanguard indeed consisted of five tanks, along with five armored personnel carriers. By now, the infantry from the armored vehicles had dismounted and were firing continuously in several directions, while the tanks’ main cannons swiveled back and forth, hesitating to fire.
Gao Yuan felt he had been spotted, so he immediately turned and ran. Then, as expected, bullets swept across his previous position.
Just as Gao Yuan had drawn the enemy’s attention, a loud swishing sound erupted from a thick cluster of grass, and then Ashraf tossed aside his empty rocket launcher and sprinted to one side. But after only a few steps, he rolled onto the ground and scurried to hide behind a tree.
A tank’s main gun immediately aimed in Ashraf’s direction, roaring as it fired. The trunk of the big tree where Ashraf had sought cover was blasted to smithereens.
But just then, intense gunfire suddenly burst from the enemy’s flank and rear. Machine guns and automatic rifles continuously fired, taking down the infantrymen sheltering behind the two armored vehicles.
It was only then that Gao Yuan realized that Li Jingang and his group hadn’t been together at all; they were spread out very wide, attacking the enemy from both sides and even from behind.
In terms of numbers, the enemy had an absolute advantage, but now they had fallen into an unfavorable situation, ambushed.
Gao Yuan finally stopped because he had found a good place to take cover, an anthill.
He quickly stopped behind the anthill, and then the dirt exploded and fragments flew as bullets struck the anthill in front of Gao Yuan. However, the anthill was large and firm, and Gao Yuan didn’t have to worry about the bullets.
But if a tank shell hit, that would be too much to bear; taking cover behind the anthill would also be disastrous.
Gao Yuan only wanted to seize the opportunity to act as a human grenade launcher.
Hand grenades were thrown in succession, traveling three to four hundred meters, falling accurately behind the armored vehicles. A single hand grenade might not kill all the enemies behind the armored vehicle, but it could certainly cause chaos.
After hurling five hand grenades in one go, Gao Yuan took a deep breath, bent his waist, and whooshed out from behind the anthill. By the time he had sprinted over a hundred meters, the anthill was finally hit by a tank shell, sending soil clumps flying everywhere.
The enemy’s reaction was actually not slow, but everyone, including Gao Yuan’s comrades, had completely misjudged his speed. So by the time the shell was fired, Gao Yuan was already out of the danger zone.
The infantry protected by the armored vehicles stopped moving; they lay down or knelt on the spot, firing at the enemy to their sides and rear, while the two tanks were now in an awkward position. frёewebηovel.cѳm
Without the protection of their infantry and being completely within the enemy’s range of fire, under normal circumstances, the remaining two tanks should retreat at full speed. After withdrawing from the encirclement, they could reorganize and attack again, either to cover the infantry’s advance or to bombard identified targets. They certainly should not remain stationary as targets.
The Sanitation Worker’s two tanks chose drastically different strategies. One tank accelerated towards the Egg Bomb Squad’s position, while the other, after a brief stop, suddenly went into full reverse.
The tank charging at the Egg Bomb Squad was firing its mounted machine guns as it sped forth, but after the Egg Bomb Squad had suddenly opened fire, ambushing the two armored vehicles and their protected infantry from behind, they had already begun to retreat.
The grasslands during the rainy season were completely different terrain from the dry season; the tall green grass, about waist-high, provided excellent camouflage.
As the tank with firing machine guns charged toward the Egg Bomb Squad, Cao Zhenjiang suddenly rose from the grass. Without standing up, he knelt on one knee and, at a distance of less than thirty meters from the tank, fired a rocket at the tank’s rear.
Gao Yuan and his team were using the 08-style 80mm rockets, which are multi-purpose munitions. A major advantage of these rockets is that they can be fired in enclosed spaces. The multi-purpose warheads balance armor-piercing and blast effects since specialized armor-piercing rounds are not effective against personnel, and dedicated high-explosive rounds can’t target tanks and armored vehicles.
But as with anything, being multi-purpose means they are average, lacking standout advantages or distinct disadvantages.
However, now using the 08-style rockets against tanks, their armor-piercing capability was insufficient, at least not enough to penetrate the frontal armor of a T55 tank.
But striking the rear armor of a tank was not much of a problem, because like any tank, while the frontal armor is the thickest, the sides and rear are much thinner, and the top armor is the thinnest.
Firing a rocket at a tank from a distance of thirty meters was very dangerous because creating the opportunity for such a shot was inherently extremely risky.
When the rocket hit the rear of the tank, there was a loud boom. The tank continued to advance, but its speed rapidly decreased. Then the hatch of the tank struck in the rear opened, and a soldier emerged, still smoking. As soon as he climbed out of the tank turret, Yu Shunzhou, who was next to Cao Zhenjiang, stood up and swept his rifle across.
The tank crewman who had just emerged halfway lay on top of the vehicle. Moments later, with a loud bang, both Yu Shunzhou and Cao Zhenjiang instinctively dropped to the ground.
A sympathetic detonation occurred inside the tank. The explosion was so intense that it sent tank shells flying into the air before they crashed back down with force.
Of the five tanks, four were gone, and two armored vehicles were destroyed. Just as one of the remaining armored vehicles turned its cannon to fire at Yu Shunzhou and his team, a rocket shot from behind trees over a hundred meters to one side hit the armored vehicle directly. Although the vehicle did not explode or catch fire, its 73mm gun and coaxial machine gun never managed to shoot.
If rocket launchers needed the side or rear to engage tanks, hitting a BMP-1 armored vehicle was a piece of cake. As long as they were within range, they could hit it from anywhere.
From the first explosion to Gao Yuan running to the vicinity, to the destruction of four tanks and two armored vehicles, the whole process took no more than two minutes.
Gao Yuan stopped. He watched as Yuri and Green Hat rapid-fired their machine guns from a distance of less than fifty meters at the soldiers leaving the armored vehicles. At that moment, Li Jingang also stood up to fire.
The battlefield was not in a straight line but formed an irregular pentagon. Teams of two or three spread out very widely, able to produce crossfire from any angle, and they refused to engage the enemy head-on. Therefore, the enemy, taken by surprise, couldn’t even return accurate fire immediately.
What was most fatal for the enemy was their division, which prevented them from coordinating even the most basic infantry and tank operations.
However, the situation was not entirely favorable for Spark Squad because the enemy had an absolute numerical superiority. While the tanks at the front were under attack, the trucks at the rear and the troops they carried were unscathed. Now, those infantry soldiers were jumping off the trucks and quickly started shooting towards Spark Squad.
Spark Squad seized the opportunity, the precious initial chance, to inflict severe damage on the enemy. But once the enemy’s infantry spread out and gained a sense of Spark Squad’s general direction, they could suppress fire, making it very difficult for Spark Squad to either fight or retreat.
But up to this point, Yuri and Green Hat had still not taken action, while Sirte and Cross were also flanking from the side. As long as they could contain and suppress the enemy from the flanks, the people in the main battlefield would still have a chance to withdraw.
But the idea of retreating unscathed was impossible, because the enemy wasn’t foolish. The initial shock was one thing, but after a couple of minutes to react and regroup, pushing forward with firepower while attacking Spark Squad was another matter entirely.
Unless there was an unexpected turn of events, the enemy’s unfolding and already initiated suppressive fire could not normally be countered. But, under abnormal conditions, the impossible could become possible.
And Spark Squad had Gao Yuan, who was that variable, the one who could turn the impossible into possible.
Although Gao Yuan had naively run a loop towards the enemy, thankfully, he made the right judgment in time. He had now disengaged from the front line and was circumventing from the side towards the enemy’s rear.
