The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 410 - 403
Chapter 410: 403
To set an ambush for the enemy, it isn’t necessary to have a clear grasp of their movements, but it is certainly very helpful.
It seemed as if the enemy was advancing along the trail left by Gao Yuan and his team, but it was unclear how they were doing it. However, tracking them wouldn’t be difficult because there would always be traces along the way. As long as there were skilled trackers, finding the way wouldn’t be hard.
Gao Yuan watched from the tree as several people slowly searched and advanced, but the enemy’s speed was somewhat too slow. Even though Spark Squad was on foot, considering the enemy’s pace, there didn’t seem any risk of being caught up to.
Because one must ascertain the direction before they can take advantage of speed. If the direction is wrong, wouldn’t faster speed mean straying farther away?
So Gao Yuan didn’t quite understand what exactly the enemy was doing.
The sun had come up, and it was behind Gao Yuan, making him backlit, while the enemy was facing the light, which was a further disadvantage for their search.
Gao Yuan held his binoculars and didn’t need to worry about the lens reflecting light that might be seen by the enemy, so he kept monitoring the enemy’s movements through them.
Twenty minutes had passed, and the enemy had only advanced about three hundred meters—a speed that posed no threat whatsoever.
But just then, Gao Yuan saw someone get out of an all-terrain vehicle and then several people started fiddling with something at the side of the vehicle.
Gao Yuan’s instincts told him the enemy was brewing some sort of action, and then through the binoculars, he seemed to see something taking flight. At that moment, he understood.
The enemy had never planned to continue searching this way. After daylight, they simply found and confirmed the trail left by Spark Squad and then, they directly deployed drones.
Why he could distinguish it was drones, because the enemy had launched small fixed-wing aircraft, the kind that require a sliding track to act as a runway, for these drones were larger, capable of reconnaissance distance reaching several dozen kilometers. Although still small tactical reconnaissance drones, they were incomparable to rotary-wing drones.
Gao Yuan put away the binoculars, turned around, climbed down from the tree, and then began to run back frantically.
The enemy had launched not just one drone, but at least four. This way, they could conduct a fan-shaped search, and as soon as they confirmed the target’s trace, the tanks and armored vehicles that were standing by could immediately come.
"I see grasshoppers on the hill, want a bite?"
Gao Yuan called out directly on the radio. Even if the enemy were able to intercept the broadcast, let alone understand it, they’d have to understand Chinese, and furthermore, comprehend the dialect Gao Yuan was speaking.
Grasshoppers refer to very large locusts, and locusts symbolize aerial reconnaissance. If it were sparrows or swallows, the enemy might understand, but as for "grasshoppers on the hill," let them guess.
"Received, understood, let’s head down to the river, over."
Gao Yuan wasn’t sure how Li Jingang and his team would arrange the ambush, but he had to get back as quickly as possible.
When Gao Yuan gradually slowed his pace and returned to the area they had rested earlier, he saw that the five members of Egg Bomb Squad were gone, and only Xinghe, Lizhizi, along with Renato and Harry Keen were left from the Spark Squad, plus Sirte and Klaus.
Six people in total were sitting and resting under the tree, but Sirte and Klaus appeared to be on alert.
"What’s going on, where are the others?"
Klaus said indifferently, "They have already dispersed, preparing to ambush the enemy. We need enough people to act as bait, which will be the six of us plus you. We might have been spotted by drones by now. So, we will start walking forward now, drawing the enemy into the ambush zone."
Gao Yuan thought for a moment, then said, "Ambush here? I understand."
Klaus asked, "How many enemy forces are there? Did you get a clear view?"
"I couldn’t see clearly. There are more than five tanks and about the same number of armored vehicles, but at least ten trucks. Plus the armored vehicles, I conservatively estimate that the total enemy forces are at least over two hundred."
Klaus whispered a few words to Sirte, then turned to Gao Yuan and said, "Understood. It may be difficult, but we should be able to handle it. Let’s move out."
Gao Yuan looked back around. The people were well hidden; he saw nothing.
As they started moving forward, Gao Yuan constantly restrained the impulse to look up at the sky. But he knew that as long as they kept walking, they were bound to be spotted by the drones, and once spotted, the enemy’s tanks would definitely catch up, then disperse to surround them, and launch an attack with the protection of their infantry.
It was definitely going to be this process, but it was unclear how far along the enemy had gotten.
Although Gao Yuan and his team didn’t move fast, when they had traveled nearly one kilometer, Gao Yuan suddenly heard a loud boom from behind.
Gao Yuan immediately turned back and shouted loudly, "We’re under fire!"
Sirte looked back, then nodded calmly, while Klaus waved his hand and said, "Spread out! Evacuate quickly. We’ll go back and support. Hide well."
Gao Yuan immediately pointed at Xinghe and said, "Take cover, and be careful."
Klaus turned to Gao Yuan and said, "You hide here too."
Gao Yuan replied irritably, "Bullshit!"
Another explosion sounded, followed by machine gun fire, cannon fire, and a series of explosions.
The firefight had started very urgently, and at that moment, Gao Yuan felt that it was truly impossible to hide anything anymore. He was like a light in the night; once illuminated, going unnoticed was impossible. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Gao Yuan dashed out in an instant. Sirte, while running slowly with his gun, stumbled and nearly fell, then, with a face full of shock, he said to Klaus, "Something just ran past, was... was it him?"
Klaus nodded and took a deep breath, then with heavy steps, he said quietly, "Ever since the aliens arrived, strange things have been becoming more frequent."
Sirte saw Gao Yuan’s figure and after analyzing the speed, he stood silently for a moment, then said to Klaus with a dazed expression, "I mean... I knew it. Gao Yuan is clearly a rookie. There must be something wrong with him being the captain. It turns out to be the case. Is he a bio-enhanced human? Or... some kind of monster?"
Klaus wanted to run faster, but he was genuinely having issues with his physical stamina, so he had to raise his voice at Sirte and said, "Now is not the time to think about that. Don’t just stand there like an idiot!"
Sirte finally started running again, but his face was still filled with confusion as he said, "Scarecrow, do you think... we’re about to become obsolete?"
Klaus said coldly, "Survive first, then worry about being made obsolete by the times!"
