Chapter 81: Chapter 80: The Time to Fulfill the Promise Has Arrived
By the time they arrived at the Crown Prince’s sleeping quarters, Shen Chuwei, under Liu Xi’s guidance, boarded a horse carriage.
She lifted the carriage curtain and saw Xiao Jinyan sitting inside the carriage, clad in moon-white clothes. Under the faint candlelight, she could clearly see his narrow, phoenix-like eyes looking right at her.
Xiao Jinyan looked at Shen Chuwei’s attire, which was no different from when they last went hunting during the autumn imperial exam, except for a face covering on her cheeks, which didn’t seem out of place at all.
"Your Highness," Shen Chuwei let down the carriage curtain and sat at a position neither too close nor too far from Xiao Jinyan.
Once she was seated, she raised her little face and asked with curiosity, "Your Highness, where are we going?"
Xiao Jinyan lifted his teacup and took a sip, "Out of the palace."
As soon as Shen Chuwei heard they were going out of the palace, her eyes lit up. Having been here for so long, she had only left the palace once. She had seen the delicious foods on Champine Street but hadn’t eaten much.
Now that she could leave the palace, was she still afraid of not getting to eat those delicacies?
The horse carriage’s wheels creaked and groaned, just like Shen Chuwei’s mood at the moment, bouncing with excitement.
When they arrived at Champine Street, Weichi lifted the carriage curtain. Shen Chuwei was the first to alight from the horse carriage, standing to one side as she waited.
Xiao Jinyan then came out of the carriage, glanced over the bustling street and said, "Let’s go."
"Okay." It was Shen Chuwei’s first time following Xiao Jinyan out and, inevitably feeling excited and nervous, she feared making any move that might displease him.
The prosperous scenes from historical books she had read about, today she was witnessing them with her own eyes, which felt completely different.
Both sides of the street were filled with stalls selling snacks and trinkets, comparable to the vibrancy of modern pedestrian streets.
Seeing an old man making figurines out of dough, Shen Chuwei wanted to go over and take a look. She withdrew her gaze and looked towards Xiao Jinyan, noticing that he was striding forward without stopping. She reached out and tugged at his sleeve, "Master."
Being outside was not like being in the palace. Titles and forms of address should be adapted accordingly, and Xiao Jinyan didn’t even need to teach her that.
Xiao Jinyan stopped walking and turned to look at Shen Chuwei, "Hmm?"
Shen Chuwei pointed towards the old man in the distance, looking at him with hopeful eyes, "This concubine wants to look at the figurines."
Xiao Jinyan followed her gaze and saw the old man making dough figurines, then he looked back at Shen Chuwei, "Do you like them?"
Shen Chuwei nodded. She had yet to taste dough figurines and wondered if they were good.
Xiao Jinyan: "Go have a look."
Approaching the stall, the old man greeted them warmly, "Young masters, would you like to buy any?"
Xiao Jinyan glanced at the figurines displayed on the shelf, which were all characters from operas, then said to Shen Chuwei, "Pick two for yourself."
Shen Chuwei’s eyes curved in delight. She loved his overbearing CEO vibe, generous and wealthy!
Hehe!
She crouched in front of the stall, scanning the dough figurines on the shelf. The taste of the figurines was much the same; she decided to pick two good-looking handsome figurines.
The old man assessed the graceful young nobleman in front of him and suddenly had an idea, "Young master, I see you both are quite handsome. Would you like me to make dough figurines in your image?"
Xiao Jinyan stood by quietly, saying nothing.
Shen Chuwei took his silence as consent, "Yes, please."
"Just wait a moment, young masters, I will have it ready shortly." The old man chuckled and began making the figurines with skilled hands. After some time, he had made two figurines, one resembling Shen Chuwei and the other Xiao Jinyan.
"It’s ready, young master. Please take it."
Before Shen Chuwei could touch her figurine, she saw a hand reach over and take it.
She had no choice but to take the one resembling Xiao Jinyan. That aloof, expressionless face had a somewhat similar look to it.
Xiao Jinyan lowered his eyes to look at the dough figurine in his hand, which, like hers, wore a face covering. The delicate little face resembled Shen Chuwei quite a bit.
The old man’s craftsmanship was good. "Weichi, give a tip."
Weichi pulled out a tael of silver and handed it to the stall owner.
The old man looked at the weighty tael of silver in disbelief. He wouldn’t make that much in a year of selling figurines.
Shen Chuwei held the figurine of Xiao Jinyan, glanced at the one in Xiao Jinyan’s hand, and wondered when he planned to give it to her.
After walking for a while, they arrived at a pastry shop called Daya Zhai.
With curiosity, Shen Chuwei followed Xiao Jinyan inside.
As soon as they entered, a shop attendant greeted them warmly, "Young master, what pastries would you like to purchase?"
Xiao Jinyan said, "Tea fruit pastries."
Shen Chuwei, who was curiously examining the shop’s pastries, heard Xiao Jinyan mention tea fruit pastries. She paused, then looked up at him.
Xiao Jinyan just then turned his head towards her, "I promised you before."
The surprise was so sudden that Shen Chuwei was caught off guard, momentarily at a loss. The Crown Prince who promised pie in the sky had suddenly delivered it; how could she not be shocked?
"Thank you, Master."
The attendant brought out three different styles of tea fruit pastries for them to choose from.
Shen Chuwei waved her small hand, "I’ll have them all."
"Alright, please wait a moment, young master, I will wrap them up quickly." The attendant took some waxed paper and carefully packaged the pastries, securing them with a twine string.
Shen Chuwei eagerly took the tea fruit pastries from the attendant’s hands as Weichi paid.
Xiao Jinyan watched Shen Chuwei’s eager manner and said, "Let’s go."
"Okay." Shen Chuwei followed Xiao Jinyan at an unhurried pace, carrying the tea fruit pastries.
After leaving Daya Zhai, Xiao Jinyan intended to head back.
Shen Chuwei actually wanted to continue strolling around, not knowing when she would have the chance to come out again.
But since Xiao Jinyan showed no interest in lingering, she had no choice but to follow him back.
The streets of Champine Street were bustling at night, with people coming and going.
Xiao Jinyan’s looks were too extraordinary, drawing a hundred percent turnback rate wherever he went.
"Quick, look, that young master is so handsome!"
"Yes, truly! I wonder from which family he comes. Is he betrothed?"
A few girls nudged each other, wanting to approach but held back by their shyness as women.
In their pushing and shoving, one girl got pushed in front of Xiao Jinyan.
The girl blushed, curtsied and said, "Young master, this little maid has unfortunately lost her way, could you kindly give directions?"
When the girl rushed over, the strong scent of her rouge and powder assaulted him, causing Xiao Jinyan’s nose to tingle uncomfortably, and a flicker of disgust crossed his eyes.
Weichi promptly stepped forward to block the girl, "Miss, please don’t block my master’s way. If you have any questions, just ask me."
Weichi was tall and well-built, his looks quite handsome, although he paled in comparison to Xiao Jinyan.
Xiao Jinyan continued walking forward.
Shen Chuwei stepped up to follow, realizing that attractive people, whether in the modern era or ancient times, are constant magnets for admirers initiating conversation.
After a short walk, a delicious fragrance wafted over. Shen Chuwei stopped, followed the scent with her nose and saw a wonton stall which she hadn’t eaten for a year. Just the sight was enough to stir up her craving.
She reached out to pull on Xiao Jinyan’s sleeve, "Master, this servant wants to eat wontons."
Xiao Jinyan turned his head to look at the wonton stall. It was run by an elderly couple and the table was nearly full of customers, indicating good business.
Since they were out and about, he might as well fulfill her wish.
"Go ahead."freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
