Chapter 865: Chapter 865: Why Still Call Lawyer Jones?

Benjamin watched Catherine cooking with such eagerness, his gaze intensified when he saw that even his mother, who is particular about diet, couldn’t resist. Suspecting that it was tasty, he yearned even more to try it, but Catherine forbade him. His deep, dark eyes fixed intently on her.

Under his gaze, Catherine could oddly read a sense of grievance from those usually cold eyes, her heart softened, but she immediately thought of Benjamin’s current health and shook her head firmly, "The doctor said your stomach is very fragile right now, you can only eat light foods, no greasy or heavy foods."

Yet even after she finished speaking, Benjamin held onto the thin pancake, refusing to let go.

Catherine had never seen Benjamin like this before, a hint of amusement flashed in her eyes, her tone also softened, "Really, you can’t."

Mrs. Jones finished the food in her hand and looked up at them, then she moved closer to Alice, "Come, let’s go over there to eat."

Alice looked up at her mom and then at her uncle, thought for a moment, and followed Grandma Jones to the side.

Benjamin, Catherine, "..."

"Cough cough." Benjamin realized what he had done, coughed lightly, then released the half of the pancake Catherine was holding, somewhat reluctantly saying, "Alright then."

Earlier, Catherine was only focused on not letting Benjamin eat oily foods, and only now she realized Mrs. Jones was still there, her face flushing with embarrassment, she hastily sat down.

At that moment, Benjamin passed a bowl of porridge to Catherine.

Catherine looked up at him, always feeling he did it intentionally but couldn’t find any evidence for it, she could only give him a glance and then look down quietly.

Mrs. Jones, having witnessed all their PDA, looked up and eyed her son, "Benjamin, what exactly is going on with your health, and what are the plans next? It’s almost New Year; why don’t you put aside your work for now? In any case, health is more important."

"Mm, that’s what I’m planning too." Benjamin, for once, did not make excuses, agreeing with his mother.

This quite surprised Mrs. Jones, who raised her eyebrows then looked at Catherine, "What about you, Catherine? When is your company going on vacation?"

"Still a week to go." Catherine calculated, by next week when her company closes for holiday, it would almost be New Year. Ever since her marriage, she had not gone home for New Year. This year, so much had happened, Gabriel told her that Foster Newman had been feigning illness in the hospital ever since they left and had yet to return to the village to apologize. She was now doubtful about whether to go back.

Originally, to be with Kyle Carter, she had sacrificed a chance at a prestigious university for a mediocre undergraduate program, disappointing her parents. Later, when she and Kyle broke up, and he married a girl from the Newman family, Catherine became the laughing stock of the entire village. She then agreed to marry Foster Newman to hide her pre-marital pregnancy.

The result was a divorce, and although the Newman family apologized last time with good attitudes, the world often harbored more malice towards women. Let alone the fact that Foster Newman deliberately didn’t apologize now, even if he did, it wouldn’t restore her reputation much.

She felt fine on ordinary days, but whenever Catherine thought about it, her mood would be particularly terrible.

Hearing Catherine’s reply, Mrs. Jones counted the days, "Isn’t that after the 26th of the lunar month then?"

Catherine nodded.

Mrs. Jones frowned, considering Catherine’s hard work then changed the topic, "It’s so late then, it might not be good to go back home. If you and Alice are going to spend New Year in Swallow City, come to our house then."

Catherine was stunned, looking up at Mrs. Jones in shock, trying to read something from Mrs. Jones’s expression, but couldn’t discern anything. The other party was still as elegant and gentle as usual, warming her heart unintentionally.

During this time, her resistance to Benjamin had a very important reason, which was her belief that the Jones family would never accept her. After all, the disparity was too great, whether it was family background, education, or personal abilities, she simply couldn’t compare to Benjamin.

What was even more fatal was her divorce.

Perhaps it’s common in modern society, but common does not mean acceptable.

At least by societal standards, a divorced woman like her would not be able to find a good match again, especially when the other party is Benjamin Jones.

In such an environment, Mrs. Jones’ attitude is particularly precious.

Catherine Ford felt warmth in her eyes and it took her a while before she softly said, "Thank you, Auntie."

"Why so formal with me, child?" Mrs. Jones said with a smile, then turned to ask Alice, "Alice sweetheart, do you want to go to Grandma Jones’ house for the lunar new year? Grandma Jones has prepared a lot of tasty food for you, how does that sound?"

"Yes!" Alice nodded happily, then looked up and asked her mom, "Mom, can we go to beautiful Grandma’s house for the new year?"

"Does Alice want to go?" Catherine Ford asked with a light laugh.

After thinking seriously for a moment, Alice responded, "I’ll listen to Mommy."

Catherine Ford reached out and tousled her daughter’s hair, saying nothing more.

Benjamin Jones, who had been listening the whole time, felt pleased. Catherine Ford hadn’t outright refused, which meant she was truly considering him in her plans.

After breakfast, since Benjamin Jones didn’t have to go to work, he stayed home with Alice. Catherine Ford had already decided to try dating Benjamin Jones, so she didn’t refuse his suggestion and instead saw it as an opportunity for father and daughter to spend more time together.

While cleaning up the kitchen, Mrs. Jones offered to help Catherine Ford. Catherine Ford felt embarrassed to let an elder help, especially noticing Mrs. Jones’ hands which showed little sign of doing any housework. She was about to refuse when Mrs. Jones spoke gently but directly, "I and your uncle already know about Alice."

These words left Catherine Ford at a loss, yet not surprised as she should have realized it from Mrs. Jones’ attitude towards Alice, and it was Mrs. Jones who first noticed the resemblance between Alice and Benjamin.

However, she was nervous and didn’t know why Mrs. Jones suddenly brought this up.

"Initially, your uncle and I were not very supportive of you and Benjamin being together, and we thought about having Alice return to the Jones family..."

As Mrs. Jones spoke, Catherine Ford’s back stiffened, her body tensed up. This was the outcome she had feared the most, and she looked at Mrs. Jones warily, only to hear her continue speaking soothingly, "It was Benjamin who stopped us. He said if it’s about you and your daughter, he’d either take none or take both. You probably know Benjamin well enough; he always keeps his word. Since he spoke thus, your uncle and I could do nothing to change it, and today I see he has made up his mind."

Catherine Ford’s heart trembled, realizing she had indeed misunderstood him, but she couldn’t quite grasp what Mrs. Jones said next.

What did Mrs. Jones know? Catherine Ford’s mind flashed back to the morning Mrs. Jones entered Benjamin’s room. Could Mrs. Jones have found out she was in Benjamin’s room then?

Her face flushing, Catherine Ford immediately wanted to explain, "Mrs. Jones and I..."

"Why still call him Lawyer Jones?" Mrs. Jones asked with a laugh.

With her face red, Catherine Ford tried to explain, "It’s not what you think between Lawyer Jones and me."

"Oh, are you sure?" Mrs. Jones said, looking down at Catherine Ford’s shoes.

Following her gaze, Catherine Ford looked down at her slippers, her face suddenly turning beet red. How could she have forgotten that she had fled barefooted into the bathroom; her shoes still by the side of Benjamin’s bed - so Mrs. Jones saw them!
