Chapter 1206: Doesn’t seem right

There were many explanations for why Florence raised her only daughter the way she did. However, Hera couldn’t have fathomed the sudden thought that came to her mind.

"Florence Oxley. Charlotte isn’t your daughter, is she?"

Florence’s furious face twitched and her neck turned taut at the sudden inquiry that came out of Hera’s lips.

"What nonsense are you talking about now?" Florence’s face darkened. "First, you accuse me of being a neglected mother, but now you’re telling me my child isn’t mine at all? Hah! You must be dreaming!"

Hera slowly raised her head while her eyes lowered. "Whose child is she?"

"Did you hear — ugh!" Florence winced as blood squirted out of her leg upon raising her voice. She was already panting and breaking out in sweats. Getting agitated wasn’t helping with her injury.

"Can’t you see what I am holding?!" Florence waved the device in her hand. "Do you know what this is, Hera? This device —"

"If she isn’t your child, then you have no reason to take her under your wing. However, you took care of her," Hera continued to mumble while squinting. "You could’ve maltreated her, but you didn’t. If anything, you — I mean, you order your people to take care of her well..."

"Won’t you drop it already?" the words that Florence spat out came through her gritted teeth. "I am telling you, Hera —"

"You don’t want her to live, but you can’t kill her as well..." Hera continued, ignoring her completely for the reason Florence was reacting more than the latter realized. "... that only means..."

Florence held her breath as her eyes dilated as if she was hoping Hera wouldn’t figure something out. Hera, on the other hand, studied Florence. Just looking at her was enough to confirm every assumption she uttered just now.

Hera drew a conclusion with the side of her lips curling up. "She’s your sister?"

"Hah!" Florence scoffed, but it was weak. "You really are sharp, are you? After all these years, no one figured that out — even Nigel didn’t know. Yet, here you are, trying to unravel everything for what?"

For her amusement.

’This doesn’t seem right,’ thought Hera while observing Florence and how she easily admitted the truth.

Hera expected the woman to deny it until she was dead.

"Well, I thought the late master of the Oxley Family became infertile after a disease. What a surprise he managed to get someone pregnant at such an old age." Hera nodded. "I guess he didn’t stop trying, huh?"

Florence hissed, her complexion had grown considerably pale. "That man is stubborn. Even when it’s impossible, he still had to try and ruin things for me."

"Poor Charlotte." Hera sighed. "But anyway..."

Hera threw whatever doubt she had at the back of her head. It wasn’t important. Her eyes then veered to the device kept securely in Florence’s hand.

When Florence saw where Hera’s eyes fell, a triumphant smile turned up on her face.

"You want to know what this is?" Florence scorned. "This device right here is this island’s lifeline."

Hera squinted.

"That’s right, Hera." Florence nodded, laughing in between. "If I press this button, this entire island will turn to smithereens! Hah! Underneath the surface everyone is fighting on, a bomb is placed there waiting for someone to detonate it."

Florence laughed until her leg ached. She raised the device for Hera to see better. "You don’t believe me? Well, should we test it?"

At this moment, Florence had nothing else to lose. Half of her people had turned on her and the other half were fighting them. She couldn’t contact the people she asked to come, and she had no idea if the reinforcement could make it. Not to mention, she was injured. Even if she fought back, Hera could easily outdo her.

"I believe you," said Hera. "Please don’t do that."

"Hah!" Florence quickly became defensive when Hera pushed herself away from the desk. "Don’t come closer or I’ll press this button!"

Hera froze. ’Tiger and Joker are still here.’

She was not like Florence, who wouldn’t mind sacrificing her people. Though Hera had her losses in the past, she always ensured they knew the risks and offered them the best strategy for the mission.

"I see some unfamiliar faces in there." Florence darted her eyes at the monitors before settling them back on Hera. "Don’t provoke me, Hera. I meant it when I said if I’m going down, everyone else will go down with me! I will not let you —"

Florence was stopped by her cough, but she still forced her words out. "Especially, not Charlotte."

Florence coughed again consecutively. After her coughing bouts, she glared up at Hera.

"Why?" Hera asked.

"That is none of your business!"

"It is my business since my word matter in that meeting," Hera’s tone was cold. She didn’t know why she felt so invested in Florence’s and Charlotte’s relationship. "Just so you know, as of this moment, that emergency meeting you called is already happening."

"No, it’s not!" Florence snorted. "That meeting won’t start unless the one who called it is there. If I am not there, then everything that is said is inadmissible."

"This secret society truly impresses me. It’s like you guys have your own world, your own rules. I’ve seen cults in the past, but nothing impresses me like this Secret Society."

Despite her dwindling strength, Florence smirked in mockery. "Don’t compare us with those cults. The Secret Society was founded long before your ancestors had lived."

Weren’t they relative? Did Florence forget Hera’s ancestor was also hers?

"Moreover, even if they talked about anything, it doesn’t matter to me," Florence added, causing lines on Hera’s forehead. A triumphant and vile smirk dominated Florence’s pale face as she continued;

"Hera, do you think I called for the emergency meeting just because I want those people to acknowledge me as the head of my own family?"

Hera narrowed her eyes as she suddenly felt an ominous tug in her heart.

"Haha!" Pleased to see the change in Hera’s relaxed face, Florence clapped. "You’re right, Hera! Perhaps, we have more things in common than we expected. You’re not the only one who planned to remove all obstacles in your way tonight."

"This Secret Society... the Four Families... and you... can just rot to hell."
