Chapter 56: Don’t Hurt Yourself!

"Wait, let me switch on the satellite now," Sawyer said as he returned to the second floor. Not long after, he returned and asked Abigail to try it.

"Thank you, Sawyer! I was able to access it," Abigail replied happily.

"Good. Abby, sit near the fire while I prepare dinner. It won’t take long; we’re just going to grill some beef outside and enjoy the starry night," he explained, focusing on the preparation.

However, Abigail didn’t move. She remained in her place, her apologetic gaze fixed on him.

She placed her cell phone on the dining table a few seconds later. Without waiting for him to speak, she joined him in the kitchen, standing beside him and looking up to meet his surprised gaze.

She grinned cutely, trying to persuade him not to refuse her offer. "Sawyer, let me wash the vegetables and fruit while you handle other things."

When Abigail noticed him frown slightly, as if he wanted to tell her not to help, she quickly added, "Please don’t refuse my offer, okay? I’m feeling hungry now. With four hands, we can finish the preparation faster, right?"

Sawyer paid no attention to Abigail’s words because his thoughts were too distracted by the allure of her lips. However, seconds later, he quickly dismissed his wild thought, realizing he might end up kissing her if he didn’t.

’Oh, Abby, can you please stop testing my patience? I might express what’s on my mind now if you act cute.’ Sawyer had been holding back his feelings, but this girl seemed to be pushing him to ask her to be his girlfriend. She was impossible to ignore.

However, her recent breakup with her ex-fiancé enveloped him with hesitation and second thoughts. He knew asking her out now might scare her off. He didn’t want to risk rejection. Or worse, she would think he was presumptuous about her fragility after her ex betrayed her.

He needed to be more patient, allow her time to heal, and sincerely open her heart to a new journey with him.

"Sawyer...?" Abigail softly calls his name. When she notices him gasp, she takes the zucchini from his hand and begins to wash it.

Startled to hear Abigail call his name, Sawyer immediately cleared his throat.

"Alright, I’ll prepare the fire outside to grill the meat," he replied. He couldn’t stop her; he could only follow. After grabbing some meat and a few other items, he turned to face her. "Make sure you don’t hurt yourself, Abby. Let me slice the vegetables once I return."

"I know how to use a knife, Sawyer," Abigail said with a reassuring smile. "How big do you need this vegetable?"

Sawyer gave a faint smile, feeling defeated as he looked at her, an alluring smile teasing him. "Small, like ice cubes..." he said, demonstrating with his fingers.

"Got it, sir!" Abigail nodded, dismissing him as she turned her attention to the vegetables.

Sawyer smiled at her for a few moments longer before speaking again. "Be careful. We’re far from the hospital," he warned her, then stepped outside to prepare for the bonfire.

Tonight, he planned to give her the new experience of dining under a starry sky by a campfire, enjoying grilled meat together.

Inside the cabin,

After Abigail finished cutting the vegetables, she placed them in a container. She wanted to do something else, but the other ingredients were nowhere to be found, and she wasn’t sure what Sawyer needed.

She walked to the back door to see what Sawyer was doing and was surprised to find him sitting by the campfire.

A faint smile appeared on her lips as she realized what he meant by preparing the fire. She had thought he only wanted to grill the meat. The beautiful and romantic setup outside made her giggle.

Afterward, she returned to the living room and sat near the wooden stove. She took a moment to check her cell phone and saw a reply from Aunty Rosa.

"Your Grandma has returned to the nursing home. I have informed the staff you may come tomorrow. So, if you come, you can go straight to her room. I will only be available at the nursing home before lunchtime; I hope we can meet."

Abigail immediately replied to Aunty Rosa’s text. She told her that she would arrive before lunch to meet her.

One of Abigail’s goals in visiting the nursing home this time was to see her grandmother and investigate who had paid for her grandmother’s hospital bills.

Abigail needs Aunty Rosa to request permission to check the hospital CCTV footage. If they consent to the request, it would help her discover who actually had settled her Grandma’s medical bill.

Since Abigail knows that the person who paid the hospital bill is not Ryland, she begins to suspect that it might be someone connected to her Grandma’s past. However, this person seems to want to keep their identity a secret from her Grandma. That’s why they hadn’t visited or contacted her, as she was her Grandma’s guardian.

Abigail considers the possibility that the bill payer could be her Grandma’s husband’s family or another distant family member. Her Grandma has never shared this secret with her or her mother, so Abigail has never known her grandfather’s identity.

’Who are you? Can you please contact me? I can’t let others pay for my Grandma’s medical bills without knowing who you are! I need to know your identity to pay you back or thank you for your kindness...’

Abigail sighed deeply, trying to distract her confused mind by gazing into the flame on the wooden stove.

...

However, not even a minute later, Sawyer entered the cabin again.

"Abby, sorry to keep you waiting," Sawyer’s voice brought Abigail back from her lengthy thoughts. "Are you done chopping the vegetables?" he asked.

"Oh. Yeah. It’s all chopped and ready for cooking. Is there anything else you need me to do?" Abigail stood up and walked to the kitchen to show him the box of vegetables.

"Nothing. Would you mind following me outside?" Sawyer asked while gathering a few items from the kitchen.
