Chapter 55: Afraid Of Sleeping Alone

’Does he eat a lot? It must be because he’s a man and needs plenty of food to function, right?’ Abigail felt amused by her thoughts.

"Abby, are you done?" Sawyer’s voice from behind her brought Abigail back to reality. She straightened up and turned to face him.

"Yes."

"Well, Abby, there’s a problem with this cabin." Sawyer’s expression turned worried as he noticed her frown.

"W-What is it? We can’t stay here?" Abigail asked. Her worry could be heard in her tone. After spending so many hours reaching this place, it would be frustrating if they couldn’t stay there for the night, right?

Sawyer let out a quiet sigh. "Let’s sit by the stove; it’s warmer there," he suggested, walking over to the seating area and sitting down, waiting for her to join him.

As she settled on the couch, Abigail glanced at him; he seemed lost in thought, staring at the fire.

"What’s going on? Can you please just tell me?" Abigail urged, prompting him to turn and look at her. His expression remained the same: disturbed.

"There’s only one bedroom in this cabin. I’ve cleaned it up. You can use that room to sleep." Sawyer explained.

"What about you?" Abigail asked. She wouldn’t let him sleep on the floor. Even though it wasn’t winter, the air felt frigid in this place. She could imagine that the longer the weather persisted, the colder it would become.

"I will sleep in the guest cabin beside this one. I hope you’re not too afraid to sleep in this cabin alone!"

Sawyer’s eyes were fixed on her, trying to read her expression, and his heart sank when he noticed her slight fear.

Abigail was stunned for a moment. It wasn’t that she was afraid of mystical things like ghosts. But sleeping alone in a new place, in this big cabin in the middle of unknown woods and nowhere, filled her with worries.

What if a bear suddenly knocked on her door and ate her, or a wolf tore her apart? It would be ironic if she became a headline on the internet for such news, right?

If Sawyer weren’t in the cabin, she wouldn’t know how to handle those fears if they knocked on the door.

Abigail clenched her hands tightly, unsure how to respond to Sawyer’s words. She was afraid he might find her reasoning silly or childish.

"Abby, would you mind sleeping here alone?" Sawyer asked again after a moment of silence. She still didn’t say a word, and the worry in her eyes was clearly visible—she looked scared.

"I... I’m not afraid of ghosts, Sawyer. But I’m worried about wild animals in the forest coming to break down the door and, you know, eat me?" She turned her gaze away from him, too embarrassed to admit her silly fear.

’Gosh! How could I say that?’ Abigail scolded herself inwardly.

Sawyer nearly slipped out of his seat, trying not to laugh at her hilarious words. Looking at her adorably blushing cheeks, he asked calmly, "You mean bear?"

Abigail nodded, her gaze fixed on the crackling fire in the stove.

"I can assure you this cabin is safe from bears, wolves, or other wild animals. An invisible fence surrounds several miles of this property, keeping wild animals, especially predators, from approaching the cabin. There are some deer and rabbits around here. But they don’t eat meat. So, don’t worry about that, Abby. You are safe..."

Still, Abigail hesitated, doubting his words. This was her first time visiting a place like this, and Sawyer had left her in a large cabin alone. She slightly regretted agreeing to come with him.

Noticing her reluctance and silence, Sawyer asked again, "So, do you want me to stay here too until you sleep?"

She nodded quickly.

Her response lifted Sawyer’s heart with happiness; this was what he wanted. However, he felt it would be rude to insist on sleeping in the same house with her without her permission. She might interpret it differently and think he had other motives.

"Alright, I’ll set up my sleeping bag here," Sawyer said gently. "You can sleep soundly upstairs. If a bear comes knocking at the door, I’ll take care of it."

Abigail felt even more embarrassed at his teasing words.

"Are you okay sleeping in your sleeping bag?" Abigail feels terrible because she will sleep comfortably in bed while this man suffers sleeping on the floor.

"No worries. I usually sleep in my sleeping bag in my tent whenever I go camping. So, sleeping in this heated cabin is very luxurious for me."

"Okay. But if you feel uncomfortable, we can switch. I also don’t mind sleeping in a sleeping bag. I never sleep in one, but I see people sleeping like babies in sleeping bags on YouTube," she smiles.

"Alright, deal!" Sawyer chuckled happily, hearing how kind she was. "Alright, the night is getting late, Abby. I will prepare dinner for us."

"How about I cook?" Abigail stood up and followed Sawyer to the kitchen. "You’ve been driving for three hours. You must be tired..."

"Abby, it seems you underestimate me. Driving three hours is nothing for me." Sawyer replies before opening the fridge. "It’s fine. Let me cook tonight. But, you must cook breakfast for us tomorrow. How?" he added.

"Sounds cool," Abigail stood in her place near the kitchen; she looked at him, still standing before the fridge. "Oh right, Sawyer, this place is remote, and there is no internet here?"

Sawyer took a few ingredients from the fridge and put them on the kitchen countertop. He looked at her. "I’m sorry, there’s no signal here because it’s very far from the telecommunication tower, a few miles from this place."

"I see..." Abigail didn’t expect this place to be so remote.

"But if you need to access the Internet, I can turn on my Starlink, internet satellite..." He could see how distressed she was now. "Is there anything important that’s why you need to access the Internet!?"

"Yes, I want to check if my Grandma’s nurse replies to my text." She explained.
