Chapter 57: Sawyer, Do You Like Me?
Abigail’s jaw dropped as she took the stunning view near the bonfire. Earlier, she hadn’t noticed the string lights hanging around the area. Still, she saw it surrounded by warm, yellow light bulbs that created a perfectly cozy atmosphere.
"Wow, the light and ambient setting is so cozy and beautiful, Sawyer..." Abigail commented while walking near the fire and setting the vegetable bowl on the table. "How did you manage to do all this alone? And you even grilled the meat..." She was delighted to see the marbled meat sizzling on the grill.
"You like it?"
"No, I don’t like it. I love it! It’s like—" Abigail’s voice trailed off when she turned to see him standing just a step away, so close that she felt a sudden rush of nerves.
She tried to move, but a seat behind her and the bonfire in front of her blocked her way. She froze, trying to act casually and hide her nervousness.
"I’m glad you like the setting, Abby. I put a lot of effort into hanging the string lights. Hearing that you like, it makes my heart swell. My plan for a romantic dinner under the starry sky was successful." His casual words made Abigail’s heart race.
She lowered her gaze to their feet, unable to respond to his flirtatious words. This time, she decided to try to ignore it. freewebnσvel.cѳm
"Alright, let’s sit," Sawyer said as he settled into the chair near the grilling pan, gesturing for her to sit beside him. He busied himself, making sure the grilled meat cooked perfectly.
After a while, he placed a few slices of beautifully grilled meat on an empty plate at the small table next to Abigail.
"Try it, Abby. I hope you like the taste and tenderness," he urged while continuing to grill another batch of meat and some vegetables.
Without hesitation, Abigail took a bite of the grilled meat. As the meat melted in her mouth, her eyes widened in amazement at how delicious Sawyer’s marinade was.
Sawyer quickly glanced at her, a satisfied smile crossing his face when he saw her enjoying the meat. "How is it?" he asked.
"This is the best-grilled meat I’ve ever eaten! So tender and juicy, and the taste is perfect!" Abigail gave him a thumbs-up.
"Don’t try to flatter me, young lady. I just used salt, black pepper, and garlic butter," Sawyer chuckled, amused by her high praise.
He then turned his attention to the vegetables—zucchini, carrot, broccoli, and onion—and started to stir-fry them just as he had marinated the meat, using only salt, black pepper, and garlic butter.
"I’m telling the truth! You can try it yourself if you don’t believe me," she replied, continuing to savor the grilled meat on her plate.
Not long after, Sawyer placed steamed vegetables on her plate. When she attempted to eat, the hot temperature nearly burned her mouth.
"Be careful, Abby..." Sawyer said worriedly.
She smiled at him and tried to eat again. The flavor was incredibly delicious. Although she wasn’t a fan of vegetables like broccoli and carrots, this steamed dish made her finish all of them in just a few minutes.
Abigail was so focused on her food that she didn’t notice Sawyer’s pair of eyes gazing at her lovingly. Each time the slice of meat on her plate was nearly gone, he would put another one on her plate.
Feeling that her stomach was so full that even sitting was uncomfortable, Abigail looked at Sawyer. She was stunned to see that his plate was immaculate as if nothing had touched the plate. ’Gosh! He hasn’t eaten yet. Why did he only feed me so much meat and veggies?’
"Sawyer, you haven’t eaten your own cooking. You should eat too," she said playfully. "Stop feeding me only, or I might turn into Mama Bear..."
"You look cute when you eat, Abby. If you become my girl, I don’t mind if you turn into Mama Bear..." Sawyer replied, feeling his blood run cold as soon as the words left his mouth.
’What the hell, man!?’ he scolded himself internally, embarrassed by his slip of the tongue. How could he think of flirting with her again?
To escape the awkwardness, Sawyer turned his gaze to the grill pan, took a few slices of meat, and placed them on his plate.
As he began to eat, he found the taste to be just as delicious as she had said earlier. For the next few moments, he enjoyed the meat and vegetables while trying to remind himself not to confuse her with his words.
...
Abigail was lost in her own thoughts, processing Sawyer’s words. Their conversation in the car, which almost led to an accident, flashed through her mind.
Her curiosity kicked in again; she wanted to know why his words about dating seemed so obvious. He even agreed when Brody called them a couple.
After watching Sawyer enjoy his dinner for a moment, Abigail decided not to wait any longer. "Sawyer, can we talk?" she asked.
Sawyer paused, stopping mid-chew, and looked at her. He nodded gently, curious about what she wanted to discuss.
"Do you like me?" Abigail tried to sound casual, but her eyes revealed her nervousness. Seeing Sawyer’s stunned expression made her heart tighten even more.
Instantly, countless questions raced through her mind. ’Oh my God, Sawyer Jones really likes me? Seriously? Why would he like me?’
Watching him calmly place the remaining meat from the grill pan onto a plate made Abigail even more anxious and awkward.
’He must think I’m crazy, right? How could I conclude he liked me? Abby, you are so silly!’ Abigail sighed deeply as she scolded herself while awaiting his response, which never came.
Instead, Sawyer sipped his beer and handed one to her. She accepted the cold beer and took a long drink, hoping it would calm her racing thoughts.
After forcing herself to empty nearly half the bottle, Abigail placed it on the small table between them and turned to look at him again. She was taken aback when his deep blue eyes locked onto hers.
Gathering her courage, she said, "I’m sorry, Sawyer. You don’t have to answer my question."
A smile spread across his lips as he replied, "Why do you think I like you?"
