Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 54: Almost Kissing
Chapter 54: Almost Kissing
A few hours later, the car finally stopped.
Abigail faintly heard Sawyer’s voice calling her name repeatedly. When she opened her eyes, she was surprised to find him leaning so close to her face, almost as if he were about to kiss her. At least, that was what her mind thought.
Blinking several times, she responded softly, "Hmmm..." feeling her face warm.
"Ah, you finally awake, Abby. Are you fully awake now?" Sawyer said with a light smile, pulling his head away from her. "If you are, we need to get out now. The sun has already set, and I need to turn on the electricity and light the wood stove to warm up the cabin."
Abigail was stunned by his words. She hadn’t expected to fall asleep for almost two hours during the trip. Quickly glancing outside, she realized Sawyer was right—it was dark. She couldn’t see much around her.
With the car lights still on, she noticed a modern log cabin in front of them. The cabin was two stories high and had large glass windows. She also spotted a few smaller cabins nearby that weren’t part of the main structure.
Abigail took her backpack off and followed Sawyer to the cabin.
The light was already on before she reached the cabin door. As she was about to enter, she bumped into Sawyer, who was walking toward the door.
"I’m Sorry, Abby. The cabin is still cold." he paused, noticing she only wore a black, short-sleeved shirt.
Without hesitation, Sawyer removed his army bomber jacket and draped it over her shoulders. Abigail was surprised but didn’t reject his gentle and warm gesture. The mountain’s cold wind was so freezing that she felt like it was stabbing her deep into the bone.
"Thank you," Abigail smiled shyly as she pulled the jacket on properly.
However, as the fabric warmed her skin and his minty, signature fragrance enveloped her senses, it felt like Sawyer was hugging her. Slowly, her heartbeat quickened, and the cold she had felt moments before faded away as her body heat rose.
Still standing near the door, Abigail watched Sawyer squatting by the wood stove, trying to start a fire. She hurriedly pushed away the sultry thoughts filling her mind.
Slowly, she walked over to him.
"Sawyer, do you need my help?" she asked, feeling sorry for him, already tired after driving three hours from the city to this secluded place, only to find himself struggling to make a fire.
Standing just a few steps behind him, she noticed him turn to look at her.
"Yes," Sawyer smiled at her.
"What is it? Do you need more wood?" she asked excitedly. Finally, she could help him to do something.
"No. But please, sit on that couch. I’ll get the fire going soon to warm the place," he replied, pointing to the couch near the wood stove.
Abigail was utterly speechless. She thought he really needed her help.
Not wanting to disturb him, Abigail immediately followed his orders. She placed her bag on the floor, sat on the couch, and took out her cell phone to check if Aunty Rosa had replied to the text message she sent before they left the city.
However, Abigail was surprised to find no signal in this area. She regretted sleeping during the trip, as she was utterly clueless about their location.
’Where are we? Why is there no phone signal here?’ she wondered as she looked out the large window, only to see complete darkness.
Yet, something caught her attention: she could faintly hear running water in the distance. She guessed that the cabin was located near a river.
...
Not long after, Sawyer successfully lit a fire in the wood stove. He didn’t sit with Abigail but stepped outside to turn off the car engine and unload a few things from the vehicle.
Seeing him go back and forth while carrying several items, Abigail immediately volunteered to help. When Sawyer told her it wasn’t necessary, she refused to listen and followed him to the car.
"Alright, take this one," Sawyer said, handing her a medium travel bag.
They returned to the cabin together, and Abigail followed him to the dining table near the small but modern kitchen. The kitchen featured a massive glass wall overlooking the backyard cabin, but she couldn’t see the scenery outside.
"Sawyer, this is your cabin you told me about?" Abigail asked, trying to lessen the awkwardness.
He casually explained, "Not exactly mine, it’s my friend’s. But he never comes here; I’m the one who always visits."
Sawyer felt terrible about bringing her to the cabin without first asking someone to clean it up. The plan to invite her had been so sudden that he hadn’t had time to arrange for the place to be warmed and tidied before their arrival.
"Are you hungry?" Sawyer asked.
"Not yet," she shook her head, glancing at the two large boxes on the table. "Please guide me on what to do. I’ll help you unpack. This is the food, right?"
"Hmm," Sawyer pondered momentarily as he looked over at the fridge in the corner. He had just turned on the electricity in this cabin and wasn’t sure if the fridge was ready.
"Alright, you can help me store the food in there," he said, moving one of the huge boxes and a coolbox closer to the fridge. "Are you alright if I leave you alone here for a bit?"
Abigail was slightly surprised to hear his question but nodded in response.
"I’ll head upstairs to check and clean up the bedroom. I’ll return shortly." Sawyer took his travel bag and another box before he headed upstairs.
Abigail smiled faintly as she watched him climb the stairs. She quickly focused on storing the food in the fridge.
She was surprised to find many raw ingredients in a coolbox, including ribs, sirloin, and some seafood. There were also fresh vegetables and fruits. What amazed her most was the ice cream and cake she discovered inside.
After arranging all the food and drinks in the refrigerator, she was impressed to see how much they had. The four-door fridge was stocked for at least a week.
