The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 373 - 366 Car
Chapter 373: Chapter 366 Car
Gao Yuan had intended to casually discard the drone, but thinking about the difficulty of replenishing drones, he ultimately couldn’t bring himself to throw it away carelessly.
Connected by an S-hook, Gao Yuan took the radio off the drone, and then he immediately said, "Speak!"
"We see you!"
Li Yang’s voice lacked joy but was filled with seriousness.
"Good, what’s the situation? What do we do?"
Li Yang spoke anxiously, "The situation is very bad. We... it’s difficult for us to evacuate. We must take out the enemy’s blockade firepower first. We have too many wounded, which is seriously slowing our pace."
"How many?"
"Two are unharmed, four can move, the rest... cannot move on their own."
With only two people unharmed and four able to move, how could they possibly evacuate?
Gao Yuan sighed softly, looked around, and said, "I’ll figure something out!"
Li Yang didn’t suggest Gao Yuan leave on his own, because at this point it made no sense to say such things. If Gao Yuan had been willing to leave, he would have done so already.
The Anti-Aircraft Gun needed vehicles for towing, so since there were many Anti-Aircraft Guns here, there must be vehicles as well.
Indeed there were vehicles; Gao Yuan could see several cars parked on the street to his left.
The fight was happening in the southern suburbs of Sirte City. Behind Gao Yuan, less than ten meters away, stood a house. His current position had originally been an enemy outpost set up in the southern outskirts of Sirte, or something akin to an outdoor fortification.
Getting a vehicle didn’t seem difficult. Although someone had run into the city in the direction of Fang Xiang, until now, no one had attacked Gao Yuan from the city.
This meant that if he could get into a vehicle to go for help, he could evacuate the wounded in one trip, and then they could also use the urban environment of Sirte City to engage in street combat.
Why would the enemy set up their forces like this? Why had they arranged their firepower in such a way? And why did the vast Sirte City seem like a ghost town?
One thing Gao Yuan couldn’t understand was why the enemy had many artillery pieces and D30s, which could have been brought in for direct fire. Without a need for fuse-activated shells, Li Yang and his men would have been completely annihilated. But why hadn’t the enemy done this?
The situation was indeed critical, but he still needed to think for a moment because the various inconsistencies might hide dangers, or perhaps opportunities to be utilized.
Ashraf finally arrived, having run as fast as his life depended on it, he was now gasping for air.
"I’ll get a car, and also, translate for me and Ol’Gun."
After speaking into the radio, Gao Yuan shouted to Ashraf, "What shall we do?"
Ashraf followed Gao Yuan and stood behind the corner of the wall. He first took a few deep breaths, wiped the sweat that blurred his vision from his eyes with his sleeve, and then spoke haltingly and unclearly.
"Ol’Gun says he’ll drive for the pickup; he’ll cover you."
Gao Yuan had long forgotten the feeling of tiredness, but at least he remembered what it felt like to be severely drained of energy.
"Do you need to take a break to catch your breath? Can you shoot accurately if you fire now?"
Gao Yuan asked, and Li Yang translated for him over the radio. Then Ashraf first nodded, but immediately shook his head.
Ashraf needed to catch his breath, and his shooting was already affected.
Gao Yuan glanced at the cars stopped together and quickly ran toward a pickup truck.
It was a domestic pickup, and seeing a familiar logo here gave Gao Yuan a sense of closeness.
Pulling open the door, the keys were indeed left in the vehicle. Turning the key, the pickup roared to life after a couple of attempts.
At that moment, a burst of bullets hit the hood of the truck. The bullets penetrated the windshield, hitting Gao Yuan in the chest, and the third bullet struck the inner side of Gao Yuan’s left arm, causing a burning pain.
Gao Yuan ducked out of the vehicle and crouched beside it, while Ashraf raised his gun without firing.
Gao Yuan didn’t know from where the shots were coming. He first checked his left arm; there was no bulletproof vest to protect it, and it was bleeding for sure. However, his double-layer bulletproof plate ignored bullets hitting the torso, and the shot on his arm was only a graze, the wound somewhat deep, but not a through-and-through.
Blood began to flow out, but he couldn’t concern himself with that right now. Gao Yuan turned to glance at Ashraf, seeing that he had raised his gun, so he didn’t yell out again.
The truck was still running, with a series of bullet holes in the glass, but it wasn’t too impactful. However, to make the enemy who had just shot fire again, Gao Yuan had to act as bait.
Gao Yuan stood up, his eyes scanning the two dilapidated, bullet-riddled buildings ahead as he reached the side of the second car.
Someone appeared behind a window, raising a rifle at Gao Yuan. As Gao Yuan quickly ducked, the enemy and Ashraf fired simultaneously.
Ashraf hit the enemy first, right in the head.
Gao Yuan pulled open the door of the car, got in, didn’t sit down but reached directly for the keys, and started the car.
The pulse grenade’s power was limited; it could severely affect or even destroy radios, but it was almost ineffective against cars, especially old ones with few electronic components.
After waiting a moment and seeing no one shooting, Gao Yuan climbed into the vehicle and immediately began to turn it around.
Truth be told, Gao Yuan’s driving skills were pretty ordinary. He had had a driving license before the apocalypse but couldn’t afford a car and rarely had the chance to drive. From Shenzhen to here, though, over thousands of kilometers, he had often driven, but that was along roads or where there were no roads at all. Therefore, he could drive, but maneuvering in tight spaces, reversing, or weaving through traffic were quite weak points for him.
The rear of the car bumped into the one behind, but it didn’t matter—no one was going to seek compensation from Gao Yuan. Then the street was rather narrow and the pickup couldn’t make the turn in one go, but Gao Yuan scraped past the wall and made it.
"What now? Should I drive straight over?"
Gao Yuan had to ask for Ashraf’s opinion first, and after Li Yang translated, Ashraf shook his head and said, "Let this car drive forward on its own to draw enemy fire. If you drive out directly now, you’ll die."
Alright, Ashraf had a point. Anyway, there was no shortage of vehicles here; sacrificing one as bait wasn’t a bad idea.
Finding a large rock, he placed it on the accelerator pedal. After revving up the engine, he engaged the gear, released the clutch, and adjusted the steering wheel. Once he was sure the car was heading towards the direction where Li Yang and the others were, Gao Yuan got out of the vehicle and even closed the door behind him.
Ashraf changed direction and whispered, "Cover my back. We’re a bit far, but I want to try to take out the enemy."
