(Don't forget the Alpha Quest and make the scene when he almost cied a lot more epic)

Moments earlier.

"Erghh…"

Viora groaned softly as she reached for her throbbing head that felt like it was cracked open.

It stunned her in place for a painful minute.

She opened her eyes and realized she was lying down, facing the dark sky.

Groaning lightly, she sat up.

"What happened?" Viora straightened her back while still clutching her head.

Then, when she turned to look at her surroundings, her eyes widened as she remembered she was supposed to be in the middle of helping the people of Mahkam Ruin to regroup, "I was clearly helping Grant, but then… I don't remember anything. Everything turned black."

Viora looked at her hand incredulously.

In her entire life, she has never experienced a sudden faint like that.

Never did she pass out was instantly like this.

Earlier, she was feeling fine and powerful, but in the next second, she blacked out.

That's not normal.

"You can relax, priestess—the Black Rain has stopped."

A voice greeted her from the side.

Viora turned to look at the source and realized it was none other than Grant.

He was sitting on a rock, looking exhausted.

"How long did I pass out?" Viora asked as she climbed back to her feet.

"Not long," Grant answered and paused. "Maybe a bit more than five minutes? It's really not that long."

Once she got to her feet, she nodded and turned to check the situation.

From the looks of it, the ruin was now in its recovery period since the Black Rain had finally stopped. But then, she sucked in a cold breath when she remembered something, "Oh God, Rex! Rex is still fighting the Singing Lady!"

Just as she was about to turn, a surge of energy shook the entire ruin.

Viora and Grant looked down, realizing the ground was quaking hard.

As if there was a sudden earthquake.

But the quaking wasn't the most troubling thing at the moment, that would be the silver full moon that appeared—in the middle of the sky out of nowhere. Not to mention, it was oddly very close too.

Not at an arm's distance but uncomfortably closer than where a moon should be.

Glancing over to where the source was, Viora's expression paled.

She knew that this had something to do with Rex.

However, the worst part? She sensed the Divine Saintess' energy nearby, too.

Fearing for what was going on between the two of them, Viora ran as fast as she could.

Along the way, she tried to channel her life energy and fly, but she couldn't.

On top of that odd occurrence, she also felt drained, almost like her power was being kept at a minimum. "Just what is happening?" She grumbled, but then realized what this was. "Divine Saintess…"

It took two minutes for her to reach the edge of the ruin, and another two minutes to reach where Rex and Kei Xun were. Along the way, the silvery full moon above disappeared—and when she got there, the presence of the Divine Saintess was gone.

She had already left before Viora could reach them and see what was going on.

Once she got close enough, her steps faltered.

Viora's expression turned pale as a sheet at the sight of Rex, cradling Linthia—who was on the ground. Not too far from those two, there was April, who was still in shock. She was on her knees, trembling.

Knowing how pampered—the young heirs of the Aurelius House were, Viora could instantly tell what she had just witnessed. It was not death itself, she had already seen many deaths in the Forsaken Tower, but the crippling, cold grip of death instead.

Only a few things could cause the trauma she was feeling right now.

And almost dying was one of them.

Viora turned when she noticed Rex lifted his head and slowly glanced over his shoulder.

Both of their eyes met, and she felt suffocated instantly.

It was as if someone was physically strangling her, and there was nothing she could do.

"W-Wait…" She forced out a word in fear.

Even though Rex changed earlier—turning brutally cold and calculating with his lava-molten eyes, Viora didn't feel this much pressure. Rex had returned to normal—the red shade in his eyes had already returned.

But her senses reacted strongly to him now, than earlier.

She soon realized the reason.

Earlier, Rex's killing intent was on the Singing Lady, but now, it was fixed solely on her.

Rex slowly rose to his feet and walked over to her with steady steps.

As he approached, Viora didn't move.

Or rather, she couldn't move.

Not that there was an invisible energy holding her in place, but her body refused to move.

Soon, Rex stopped a good distance away, not too far for him to reach her with his hand, and not too close for it to be uncomfortable. He stood motionless, still locking eyes with her, with the same unsettling gaze.

Then, after an intense couple of seconds, he finally opened his mouth.

"Kei Xun did this," Rex declared, his voice final. "Your Saintess did this."

"I…" Viora gulped—she already anticipated this, but it still surprised her. "I'm sorry on her behalf."

Hearing this, Rex tilted his head menacingly.

His raven-dark furs made him blend—with the darkness, the Black Rift that began to recover from the damage it suffered from earlier, leaving only his glowing crimson eyes. From Viora's standpoint, it was almost as if she were talking to a shadow, no, worse, a deadly monster.

"On her behalf?" Rex chuckled. "You brought her here, didn't you?"

"N-No…" Viora stuttered, looking around—as if there was anyone around her who could help. "I… Okay, I know, I understand that by being with you there was a chance the Divine Saintess would notice—and come to us, b-"

Before she could even finish, Rex was already chuckling.

It was funny to him.

"But… I made proper steps to make sure she would not notice. I did not even use—any of my power unless I had to, and even suppress it whenever I'm around you," Viora added, being as truthful as possible. "I happen to know about the Scions by chance, accidentally, and seeing you… I was curious and wanted to stay by you."

Rex thought Viora did this for Kei Xun, but this was worse.

She was doing this for her selfish reasons.

As much as he wanted to teach her a lesson, there was also his fault in this.

I thought letting her be with me would show Kei Xun that I'm not here to cause problems, but instead, I only pulled—her attention. Then again, what is her damn reason?! Why is she doing this?! If it's because I'm a Scion, she would've come here with the intent to kill, but she didn't!

Just thinking about this made Rex's rage boil again.

Had it been in the Mortal Realm, this much rage would've made him berserk several times.

Fortunately, the Black Rift was there to help him regulate his emotions.

Shaking his head, he focused on Viora again.

"Good thing for you, I'm not going to let you go now," Rex finally said, raising his index finger to point at her directly. "You… will follow me everywhere, and when the time comes, you will also bring me to your Saintess. Do you understand?"

"Y-Yes…" Viora replied—there doesn't seem to be much choice for her.

On the other side, she also wanted this.

Rex was surprised inside when he found her accepting it willingly.

No reaction… She doesn't have a System like me.

Considering that Rex practically forced Viora, a Priestess of Purity, to turn traitor, even if it's against her will, he expected there to be a notification—that he would be notified of battling another Scion from the System. But there wasn't any notification like that.

Since Kei Xun has her priestesses, Rex thought that perhaps it was a Scion thing.

He has his pack members, and Kei Xun has her priestesses.

If any of his pack members turned against him, there would be a notice from the System, so he thought that by doing this to Viora, he would gain a reaction from the System. But it does not seem to be the case, or it doesn't work that way.

Either way, he thought wrong.

Whatever.. With the invincible II item from earlier, I doubt Kei Xun would bother me soon.

"Check on Linthia and heal her. I want her to be up again," Rex instructed coldly.

Now, he wasn't asking anymore, he was demanding.

Gone is the warmth in his tone.

Viora nodded, understanding that things had become different now, but stopped when she was about to take a step. She looked around, seemingly searching for someone—and then fixed on Rex, "I could not find her, where is Dame Crimoria?"

"She's dead," Rex answered, casting her a sharp glance. "Your Saintess killed her."

Even though she had a guess, having it confirmed was still hard.

'I'm sorry, Crimoria…' Viora thought before walking away.

Moments later, Rex was sitting on an empty spot near the Forsaken Tower—the notifications from the System started rolling in. He wasn't ready to see them, fearing that this body of his would dissipate from the Chain Sudden Quest's penalty with him failing to protect Crimoria.

If he died, he would return to the Mortal Realm.

Of course, he wouldn't give up on his mission in the Spirit Realm.

But his chances of succeeding would drop significantly.

Considering the problems that have always stacked against him without mercy, regardless of his situation, his mind was already at the worst scenario. Sucking in a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down and lifted his gaze.

Once he was ready, he began to read the notifications with a pounding heart.

<Sudden Quest: Test of Character — completed!>

<Congratulations, the user obtained 1 Red Nightfall Star, 500,000 Gold, and 1x Overload Potion!>

<Chain Sudden Quest: Test of Character — completed!>

<Achieved Conditional Rewards: Perfect Victory!>

<Congratulations, the user obtained Undying Layer of the Original, Red Selection Echo ticket, a large amount of exp, and 3 million gold!>

<Level up!>

<Level…>

<…the user has reached level 49!>

<Calculating the Alpha Quest Reward...>

<Please be on standby: the user will be notified once the calculation is finished.>

Despite reading the notifications informing the completion of his quests, Rex didn't feel any elation.

His mind was still fixed on the last part, the second Chain Sudden Quest.

But seeing that his body was still intact was reassuring for him, there was still hope.

Even so, this tension will not ease until he reads the last few notifications.

Pausing for the second time to better prepare himself, exactly like how it felt when he did not know how Evelyn—and the others would decide regarding Calidora's pregnancy, he breathed in and out three times before he eventually opened his eyes again.

<Chain Sudden Quest: Rain of Black — completed!>

Before he could even continue, he felt a massive sense of relief.

He thought that since only Crimoria died, his spirit body would die within a time limit.

Fortunately, that wasn't the case.

<Objective: Survive and protect Linthia, Crimoria, and Priestess Viora — partial failure.>

<Since the user failed to protect Crimoria and almost lost Linthia, rewards are nullified.>

<A complete partial failure grants the user no rewards and no penalty.>

Rex chuckled to himself as soon as he finished reading the notifications.

His chuckle started lightly, and it progressively became louder, as he couldn't believe one day, he would be happy because of a failure. Losing the rewards meant nothing for him in comparison to losing his spirit body—this was still a good thing for him.

Slowly, his chuckle turned hollow as he covered his face.

Gone was his relieved chuckle, turning into a self-pitying one.

He couldn't even remember the last time when things got bad, the world didn't make it even worse. Now, for the first time since he could remember, things did not end up badly. For the first time in a long time, he got extremely lucky.

At that moment, Rex began to laugh.

Not a restrained one or a mocking one—this was a genuine laugh, a happy one.

It has been a long time since he felt genuine happiness that wasn't calculated, one that was handed to him on a silver platter. But then, that laughter shifted. He felt like crying now. This was something that he really wanted, and finally, it happened.

Despite wanting to cry, nothing came out.

He only looked down, staring at the ground with a hand on his face.

Instinctively, his body knows that there is no point.

All I'm good for is to be strong. What's the point of crying? It would only make the others worried.
