The Emperor's Omega Is An Extra-Chapter 327: Countdown Before The End
Chapter 327: Countdown Before The End
Was it detrimental to his recovery? Arren didn’t think so. Most might think it was him, fighting poison with poison, but in his opinion, so what?
Would he just let psychological treatment slowly heal his wounds? He could do that. Yet... This wasn’t something that could be treated with simple counseling or therapy sessions.
The thing was... All of this debt is in the past. The memories, the torment, and everything that happened were in the past. It didn’t happen to the current him, yes. Some might argue that if they knew.
However, it was engraved in his soul. It wasn’t just memories. The despair, helplessness, and torment... Everything was real. It all happened—not to the current him, but he experienced it nonetheless.
It was all the same.
The him of the past and the him of today—it was all him. Arren was tired of escaping and burying the filth in his subconscious; he would embrace them.
Just because he was covered in filth didn’t mean he was dirty. It also didn’t mean that he didn’t deserve to move forward. They would remain, but it was up to him to leave them behind.
And so, what he needed wasn’t treatment. He needed closure. Arren needed revenge.
Revenge for the past him. Revenge for the him that would never come back. To do that, seeing him... was necessary. If it was the end or beginning, Arren was not afraid.
After all... Arren looked up and glanced in front of him, at that reliable back. His confidence and resolve became even more solid.
Duke Merphen seemed to become even more crazy as soon as the squad leader pointed his gun at him, and Arren was forced to snap out of his thoughts.
He was laughing just before, and now he was begging for his life, calling for the leader’s name countless times. When the end of his life was finally sinking in, he also proceeded to curse the Marquis.
As he was going insane, Arren only watched it, in fact, his cursing and cries were like music in his ears. Just like he promised, he barely blinks his eyes.
In his position, he also couldn’t see everything because of Spade’s back and some of the royal guards, but the Duke’s despairing voice was enough.
He really did find out that he didn’t feel anything at all. He even found the Duke’s final cries lackluster. Did he deserve it? Yes. Was this enough?
No. It was barely enough. However. It would do. After all. The finale had yet to truly start. What he was after was not Duke Merphen, but someone far more terrifying and disgusting than him.
No one seemed to hear his cries or feel any sympathy for him. Duke Merphen, in his final struggle to survive, insanely charged, as though wanting to escape.
yet, it was wishful thinking. How could he escape?
Even so, the agents didn’t seem to be eager to kill him. watching as he struggled to run, even stumbling along the way. He was like a lamb in the slaughter, fighting to survive, yet it was inevitable.
Duke Merphen, being weak and out of his wits, stumbled on his own as he collapsed on the ground. He still tried to crawl in the direction of the exit.
Slowly, he was followed by the agents expressionlessly. Spade’s group didn’t move and remained in their position. And so, Arren wasn’t able to see the situation clearly.
Still, he could hear just fine. Not even a few seconds later, as though they had enough of watching Duke Merphen and got bored with his struggle, a gunshot rang, followed by another.
Even though he expected it, Arren still flinched and slightly jumped from the start. A wrenching scream also soon came afterward, making Arren frown.
He almost closed his eyes and covered his ears. Arren was expecting this and wishing for it, but there really was a bit of a difference when it already happened.
However, he managed to stop himself. Arren forced himself to endure. He didn’t need to get used to it, he only needed to endure. Otherwise, once he faced him, he would crumble.
Not from that person, but from himself.
Arren bit his lips, and as he raised his gaze, only to met someone’s eyes. Their gazes made eye contact subtly. Even with the dim light and not seeing his face clearly, Arren could see the worry in his eyes.
As he couldn’t say anything in this situation, Arren could only nod at him, indicating that he was fine. Although the worry in his gaze didn’t fully diminish, Spade also nodded, as if to say that he understood.
Their little moment was subtle and went unnoticed, as Duke Merphen’s execution was still ongoing. As if being tortured, they didn’t kill him right away, at least they evaded any critical spots. However, there was no way for the Duke to be treated either, as his blood quickly drenched the ground.
The plan wasn’t to execute the Duke in this place, but as the outcome was the same, the agents found the process unimportant. They only watched Duke Merphen and coldly muttered, "Mission Accomplished."
Arren barely processed that the Duke was at his last breath when he sensed that the royal guards around him seemed to surround him further. Even Spade took a step back, their posture aside from Arren became ready for combat.
This action of theirs was barely noticed by the agent in front of them as he slightly turned around. However, it was already too late, when a muffled groan resounded, with a body directly collapsing on the ground.
It was so sudden that even the squad leader couldn’t even react and found himself, lying on the ground with his own blood. There weren’t even any sounds of gunshots at all, any warnings, or footsteps.
Even Arren himself was startled by this sudden turn of events. Soon, the newcomers revealed themselves in Arren’s eyes. They were the empire’s forces.
There wasn’t any battle at all, but a complete one-sided massacre. Not only did they catch the organization agents off guard, but they also decisively overwhelmed them.
Arren watched them lower their guns and salute Spade before standing at the side, waiting for the emperor’s order. Arren also couldn’t help but look at Spade, who didn’t say anything but took a step forward until he was already in front of the dying Duke Merphen.
While Duke Merphen was heaving for a dying breath, their gazes met. Spade didn’t take off his mask or anything; just looking at the Duke’s eyes. His amber eyes seemed to glow as he looked down on him.
Those gaze as though looking at someone beneath him, the gaze of someone at the top of the hierarchy. Duke Merphen, in his almost blurry eyes and last breath, finally recognized whose eyes it was.
"Y-Yo... Maj...sty..." The Duke then coughed out a mouthful of blood, tears lingered in his eyes.
Spade didn’t answer him, just looking at him. It was then, before the darkness consumed him, that he heard the emperor’s voice for the last time.
"Was it worth it?"
It was a question that was purely a question, lacking any emotion or curiosity for an answer. Was it worth it?
Duke Merphen couldn’t even ponder the answer as he breathed his last breath.
Looking at the dead Duke silently, Spade slowly raised his gaze and turned around.
"Let’s go," he said as he moved forward again. Meeting Duke Merphen was just a stroke of luck and not on their agenda.
They still had a more important and crucial mission. As he walked and passed by Arren, he stopped, as their gazes lingered with their hands silently interlocking with each other.
It only took a second before they let go of each other, and Spade led them again. And yet... It was enough.
