Chapter 289: Arren’s Adventure’s (3)

Arren didn’t deny that, despite how reckless he seemed, he didn’t really have any survival instincts when he was outside. Well, perhaps he could last in this chase, provided that he had some money on him.

Yet, Arren had nothing on him. Since he was escaping in urgency earlier, he never bothered to think about his condition. Only after he was out of danger for a while did Arren’s stomach begin grumbling for food.

After all, Arren couldn’t even fully eat their lunch, and that was the last meal he ate. Not to mention, he was on some drugs, which weakened his senses and made him weak.

Even to this point, Arren still felt his body’s condition was not great. Despite that, he needed to keep going. If not for Auntie Mildred offering him shelter, Arren could only wander and persist until he found a solution to leave the city or contact Spade.

Auntie Mildred then smiled as she continued. "Go ahead, and just so you know, I already took a bath as well, so you can be at ease eating what I prepared."

Since both of them had been in a dumpster, this was her way of easing the atmosphere. Arren couldn’t help but reciprocate the smile.

"No... I’m fine with anything." He shook his head and lowered his head in gratitude. To be able to eat anything, Arren didn’t really care at this moment.

With a carefree smile, they all started to eat. The table was truly large, but not enough for all of the children to have their seats, and Aren was also an addition, so some kids had to eat in the living room instead.

When they were eating, Arren managed to observe everyone. Auntie Mildred was lecturing the kids on not being wasteful, while some older kids were also having conversations.

The whole affair was loud and truly something Arren was not used to or had never experienced before, even in his life in a different world. However, even if that were the case, Arren’s appetite only grew, and he somehow enjoyed this kind of atmosphere.

There wasn’t any pretense, and although the dishes on the table weren’t as expensive as he usually ate, Arren really enjoyed it so much. Everyone enjoyed that simple yet delicious meal.

He happened to glance at Auntie Mildred, the sole guardian of these kids; she was only looking at the kids with affection and care in her eyes.

Admiration easily dawned inside Arren. Even if one had a reason for fostering this many children, there weren’t many who would do the same, regardless of any wealth one possessed.

For a moment, Arren had set aside the tension inside of him. Meeting someone like her seemed to be the only good thing about this whole experience.

After they ate, Arren volunteered to wash the dishes to show his gratitude but was refused since Auntie Mildred said that the kids had their own schedules for household chores.

He could only relent in the end. Arren then sat on the resting place outside of the house as he looked at the moon. Earlier, there were some kids around him, but they all went inside to sleep one by one.

The evening wind that blew on him made him shiver slightly, and his clothes were also light, but Arren remained in his position. It was almost deep at night, but the lights on most houses were still on, and the street was still lively.

Arren was used to the silent night from both the mansion and the palace, but having this kind of atmosphere was not bad either. It only opened his eyes to more different concepts of living.

A little while later, the door made a sound from being opened, and Arren turned around to see Auntie Mildred. She nodded at Arren and approached him.

"You’re not sleeping yet, so I came to check on you," she said, sitting beside Arren.

The space outside of the house wasn’t big, but it still had a considerable amount of space away from the gate.

"Ah, sorry for bothering you. I just..."

"Can’t asleep?" She completed Arren’s question.

Arren pursed his lips and nodded while averting his eyes. Even if she technically saved him, Arren couldn’t truly be at ease. Although he was beginning to trust her, that was more of a reason not to involve her and the kids in his affairs.

He was also thinking of leaving tomorrow and finding any means to contact Spade or anyone who could help him contact the alpha. Arren didn’t want to expose this beautiful family to any of his troubles. He was certain that by now, those bastards had already discovered his disappearance.

Auntie Mildred fell silent as well and only sat beside Arren; it was as though she knew that there was a lot on his mind.

After a few moments of silence, Arren suddenly raised a question. It was also bugging him, although he somehow already knew the answer. In a way, it was his way of filling his curiosity.

"Why did you help me?" Arren blurted out, but then he pondered if that was too straightforward, but as he had already said it, he could only wait for the answer.

Arren turned his face to the woman upon not hearing any answer for quite a while. Auntie Mildred was also looking at the sky; her lips were now devoid of any smile, and the glimmer of her eyes appeared reminiscing.

"I know you specifically want to ask, Why am I helping people like you?" It was the truth. Arren was curious about this the most.

She didn’t turn to face Arren, even though his gaze was obviously fixed on her. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

"Yes... I’m just curious."

She then laughed. "Of course, seeing so many children with me, anyone would be curious." Auntie Mildred’s expression softened. But then she paused again, slightly turning her head, and met Arren’s eyes. She blinked and looked at him intently.

"Perhaps I’m guilty." She murmured and lowered her eyes. "I fostered so many children because it’s my way to lessen this guilt within me."

Arren was taken aback by this answer and the honesty she showed. He almost wanted to interrupt her, thinking that he was hearing something he shouldn’t.

It seemed his thoughts were reflected in his panicked expression. Auntie Mildred chuckled once more and downplayed her answer.

"It’s fine... I also answered those children whenever they asked me."

Arren swallowed and decided not to ask further about this. It would be too rude to delve into someone’s tragic experience, and he didn’t want to let her recall those memories just for the sake of satisfying his curiosity. Knowing the gist of it was enough.

So, Arren changed the subject. He locked eyes with her and spoke with a bit of solemnity.

"Auntie Mildred... Can I borrow your phone?"
