Chapter 70: The Field of Shock

Help. Wasn’t this topic straying a little too far? He could understand the first part, but he was completely lost in the second. Why did he need to speculate about how this hidden land came to be inside a city? Wasn’t that just unfair to an elf?

"Actually, for elves, this kind of thing is pretty normal," Illiya said with a bit of resignation. "In elven territories, even in the most prosperous towns, there’s always a purposely cleared space somewhere. So I really can’t guess. What, is it that amazing to see an empty patch of land nowadays?"

"Don’t tell me it’s like how elves leave open space to grow plants themselves?" Illiya joked. "As far as I know, among humans, only commoners grow their own crops, right? Anyone above that class hires someone to do it."

Seoryun raised his hand and patted Illiya on the shoulder, cutting off whatever the light elf was about to say. "It’s just like you guessed. This land was personally approved by the city lord and approved specifically for someone else to farm."

Illiya: ???

He was just joking—how did that turn out to be true?

Faced with the stunned expression of the elf, Seoryun wore the look of a man who had seen through all the vanity of the world. "According to those two demons, they bought this land directly from the city lord. It was a special case. From what they said, I suspect the city lord originally wanted to give them a better plot, but for some unknown reason, those two insisted on this one."

"I was just as baffled. I’ve never seen such an unreasonable request. I asked them about it, and they said this land is very similar to the land on the border of the demon realm. Since they plan to return and farm again, they needed a patch of land here that resembled their own. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to grow anything when they go back."

Illiya listened, dumbfounded, unable to recover from the shock.

Dear gods, should he be more shocked that demons and humans were actually involved in land transactions, or that someone would willingly spend more money on worse land? Or perhaps he should be shocked at the bizarre logic demons apparently followed.

Still, none of that was as surprising as the real bombshell: the demons is doing farming.

Seeing Illiya’s stunned expression, Seoryun suddenly felt a sense of ease wash over him.

He even had a strange sense of satisfaction—so he wasn’t the only one whose worldview had been shattered.

Having someone to share the comparison with was truly comforting.

It took Illiya a long time to snap out of it.

He rubbed his face without caring about his appearance and suddenly found himself understanding what Seoryun had said earlier.

"I feel like once you’ve solved this, we won’t ever have to worry about our safety when visiting the demon realm."

And wasn’t that the truth?

If the demons were now passionately devoted to farming, then surely the elves—who were naturally close to plants—would be seen as their "good friends," especially for demons living in the border with poor soil.

"So you brought me here just to have me observe the plants on this plot of land?" Illiya finally calmed down, and the intelligence that had been offline for a while finally reconnected. "Then this isn’t just a barren piece of land. It’s a barren field."

With that realization, Illiya refocused and began observing his surroundings more closely.

Once his attention settled, he noticed many small details that had previously escaped his eyes.

Scattered across the yellow soil were tiny flecks of green—so faint and sparse that they were nearly invisible unless one looked very carefully. As he substituted these green spots with the idea of crops in his mind, Illiya was surprised to find that the planting method here was truly atrocious.

In his memory, fields—even if not precisely arranged—were at least somewhat organized. But this field was a complete mess. Judging by sight alone, there might be only ten or so crops planted on the entire plot.

Yes, such a large field had only a dozen or so plants.

The elf could not comprehend.

Even if the demons had become so extravagant that they used a whole field to grow a handful of crops, it still didn’t explain the mess: some plants were clustered so close together it was as if they shared a root, while others were so far apart you could lie down between them with no issue.

Illiya let out a long sigh. He pointed at the field with a look of utter despair. "You’re not going to ask me to save the crops on this land, are you?"

Seoryun nodded as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Illiya: ...

"OK, fine."

Illiya thought it was best if he just said his goodbyes.

Once he made up his mind, he immediately turned around to leave.

Sorry, but he was just a delicate young Elf who had never lifted a finger for manual labor—he really didn’t know how to farm!!!

Seoryun reacted swiftly, grabbing Illiya by the shoulder and stopping him in his tracks.

"Darius! Drow! Hurry up and bring those two demons out here! If you don’t come help, our savior’s going to leave!" freēwēbnovel.com

Illiya: ???

Good heavens—so you all have accomplices?!

That one shout from Seoryun shattered Illiya’s plan to quickly slip away. When he saw a man, a dark Elf, and two demons crawl out from a corner, all thoughts of escape were completely extinguished.

Seriously—how long had they been squatting there in that corner?!

Once Seoryun saw that Illiya was no longer trying to run away, he let go of Illiya’s shoulder.

"Early death, late death, it’s all death. We were tortured all night last night. Illiya, as our friend, shouldn’t you help share some of our burden?" Seoryun spouted nonsense with a straight face.

Illiya: ...

Thank you, we are officially no longer friends.
