Chapter 57: You Have to Pay for Food?

Standing across from them, Eoryun looked like he was about to march to his doom, practically broadcasting a vibe that said: "Do whatever the hell you want."

"Oh-ho," Illiya said in surprise. "I thought Eoryun would unleash some amazing ultimate technique and give those brutes a good beating."

"Even though Eoryun’s body is having some issues, he still has a solid foundation. No matter what, he’s a certified mage."

Darius burst out laughing. "What are you thinking? Eoryun just isn’t that kind of person. He has no awareness of the fact that he’s a mage. Any other mage would’ve tossed a few spells by now and ended it. But him? He’s out here bending over backward trying to explain himself. I bet he’s mentally screaming for us to come save him right now."

The image of hot blooded youth Eoryun that Illiya had in his mind shattered instantly.

He sighed helplessly.

Illiya, having thought all this through, suddenly raised his voice and declared, "He’s telling the truth."

At the sound of a new voice, the surrounding onlookers turned their heads in unison to find the source.

Those people who are standing in front of Illiya automatically stepped aside to create a path.

The angry tension in the burly men’s bodies had been at a boiling point, but upon hearing someone else speak up, they suddenly froze.

Their rage deflated like a punctured balloon.

They weren’t unreasonable people.

Since someone was backing up the boy’s words, they might as well listen to what others had to say.

It wasn’t like they were here to start a blood feud—they just wanted to collect a debt.

The leader of the group of burly men took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down.

He had nearly burst a vein from sheer frustration—how could someone be this shameless?

When he turned to see who had spoken and found that it was an elf, he was visibly shocked.

His demeanor immediately became more respectful. He performed a formal elven salute and said in a polite tone, "So it’s Your Esteemed Elf. Do you know this kid?"

Illiya was startled by the large man’s respectful bow. When he heard the question, he instinctively replied, "Yes, I know him. He’s with us."

The man suddenly understood, nodding. "So that’s how it is. That kid... Then, Your Your Esteemed Elf, do you also know the person standing behind your friend?"

Illiya was completely confused.

He couldn’t understand why the large man became so much more friendly after seeing him.

Looking at them again now, all their previously fierce and intimidating aura had vanished.

They now seemed gentle and approachable.

"We really don’t know that girl," Illiya replied, though he couldn’t help being a little curious. "Did she do something wrong?"

The man answered without hesitation, "Not much. She just ate without paying. When we asked her why she didn’t pay, she even righteously asked us why she should pay. After the negotiation failed, she threw a spell and injured a few of my brothers. So we chased her all the way here."

Illiya listened in a daze.

The girl hiding behind Eoryun suddenly shouted unhappily after hearing this, "Why should I pay? Why do I have to pay for eating?"

Everyone present: "..."

Girl, isn’t it perfectly normal to pay for food?

The girl frowned deeply, her face full of confusion. She truly didn’t understand.

"But why do you have to pay?"

Eoryun couldn’t hold back anymore. He jogged two steps away and hid behind Illiya. Sticking out his head, he weakly muttered, "You just have to pay for food. Even a three-year-old knows that."

The girl protested, "I’m not a three-year-old! I... I’m many years old!"

"But no one ever told me I had to pay for food," she added, her face scrunching up like a bun, her voice carrying a hint of grievance.

Seeing her expression didn’t seem fake, Illiya cautiously asked, "So you didn’t know because no one told you? Where did you live before?"

The girl brightened up immediately, finally feeling understood. "Handsome elf, you’re right. No one ever told me! I used to live in the sea! I was the most beautiful one there!"

She even looked proud as she said that last part.

Illiya didn’t quite understand the connection between living in the sea and being the most beautiful, but a vague guess began forming in his mind.

So he turned to the large man and said, "She’s probably from a special race. It seems she hasn’t been out in a long time, and genuinely didn’t know about it. How much did she spend? I’ll cover the cost for now."

The man didn’t doubt him and immediately gave the amount.

After Illiya paid, he still couldn’t shake his curiosity about the man’s attitude. He asked, "Are you..."

Before he could finish, the man cut him off, "You can guess if I am or not. If fate wills it, we’ll meet again. Oh, and someone told me to pass a message to you."

’Use it freely. There’s money.’

The man said this mysteriously, then turned around and left with his brothers.

Illiya: ????

Illiya was completely baffled by this series of events.

He hadn’t even finished speaking. What was the man guessing? Wasn’t he the one asking questions? "We’ll meet again if fate allows it"?

Are all the humans on this continent cryptic speakers? Can’t they talk without riddles?

Humans are just so difficult for elves to understand.

And that final message the man left confused Illiya even more.

"Use it freely. There’s money."

Why did that sentence sound so much like something an elder would say?

Wait... something an elder would say...

Could it be that the elf has opened a shop in the Nubilian Union?

Weren’t elves supposed to be detached from worldly affairs?

According to all the information about elves on the continent, their personality traits were always described with words like "aloof from worldly matters," "proud," and "calm."

Illiya had always believed this too.
