Chapter 85: Do you want to marry my daughter?
"Thank you, but I can’t take your money," Chu Yao returned the 300,000 in cash back into Ye Qiu’s hands, refusing his kindness.
"You’ve already helped me get rid of that person, I really can’t accept this money," Chu Yao shook her head, her relationship with Ye Qiu was merely that of classmates, on what basis should she accept his money?
Besides, 300,000 wasn’t a small sum. She worked part-time at this cosmetics store for 50 an hour, 300,000 was enough for her to earn for several years.
Today, Ye Qiu happened upon her embarrassing situation, Chu Yao was already humiliated enough, she couldn’t possibly take his money as well.
Seeing Chu Yao’s resolute look, Ye Qiu knew that if he insisted, Chu Yao would absolutely not take it. An idea crossed his mind, and he said, "Chu Yao, don’t get me wrong, it’s not a handout, it’s a loan. You can pay me back when you have the money."
It was evident that Chu Yao was a very strong girl. Her mother was seriously ill, and she was working part-time on her own, also enduring harassment from various perverts. Ye Qiu could imagine the difficulties Chu Yao was facing.
For such a filial girl, Ye Qiu couldn’t bear to see her being subjected to frivolity by all sorts of people just to gather enough money for her mother’s treatment.
Upon hearing that Ye Qiu was offering a loan, to be honest, Chu Yao was tempted. Her mother’s condition couldn’t be delayed any longer, or it would be very dangerous. However, deep down, she had a reluctance to borrow money from this man who made her heart stir.
It was a mix of inferiority and a pride that stemmed from deep within Chu Yao’s bones.
Ye Qiu’s gaze lingered on Chu Yao, observing the fluctuations and struggle within her eyes. Suddenly, he spoke up, "Take me to see your mother."
"Huh?" Chu Yao was startled and didn’t quite understand what Ye Qiu meant.
"Don’t overthink it, I just want to see what kind of mother raises such a fine daughter," Ye Qiu said with a smile.
"Oh." Chu Yao was actually pleased inside but felt it was inappropriate and declined, "I haven’t finished work yet, I’ll take you next time."
"I have nothing else to do anyway, I’ll just wait here for you to get off work," Ye Qiu stated directly. Chu Yao didn’t know what to say, her cheeks flushing slightly.
She nodded and murmured a "Okay," before hurriedly starting work in the store like she was escaping, while Ye Qiu stood outside, watching the passersby.
Back in the store, her colleagues, dressed in white shirts and black skirts, were all smiling and asking who the guy outside was.
Chu Yao told the truth, eliciting meaningful looks from her beautiful colleagues, their eyes roving between the two, some commenting on a handsome man matched with a beautiful woman, some saying they looked very compatible. Instantly, Chu Yao’s face turned redder; she sneaked a peek at Ye Qiu outside, hoping he wouldn’t overhear their words, or else how could she face him!
Ye Qiu could only see that Chu Yao’s colleagues were chatting and laughing with her, looking quite lively. Meanwhile, he was still wondering why her face suddenly turned so red.
Niu Yinyin looked at Ye Qiu with disdain, speaking in her adorable tone, "Big brother Ye Qiu, you’re waiting here for the beauty, does Yinyin need to stay as well?"
"If Shen Mengchen knew you’re out here flirting, she would definitely be angry."
Ye Qiu was embarrassed. What did this have to do with Shen Mengchen? Why should she be angry? Wait, that was not right, why would these words come out of Niu Yinyin’s mouth?
Clearing his throat, Ye Qiu asked, "Yinyin, how do you know Shen Mengchen will be angry?"
Niu Yinyin rolled her eyes at Ye Qiu and gestured for him to come closer. Ye Qiu chuckled and bent down, his ear next to Niu Yinyin’s mouth, and heard, "Because you bought me yummy snacks, I’ll tell you, I think Shen Mengchen has fallen for you."
Upon hearing this, Ye Qiu almost broke out in a cold sweat. Shen Mengchen liked him?
Ye Qiu shook his head; he didn’t want to entrust the rest of his life to that violent girl, that young lady’s temper. If it wasn’t for the one million yuan his father paid her every month for protection, he would’ve wanted to spank Shen Mengchen long ago.
In a low voice, Niu Yinyin finally said, "This is a woman’s intuition, make sure never to say it was me who told you, or Shen Mengchen will kill me if she finds out."
"Don’t worry, I won’t betray you," Ye Qiu reassured himself that he definitely didn’t hear Niu Yinyin mention Shen Mengchen liking him. He could appreciate Shen Mengchen’s look of admiration; the girl did have some good looks, praiseworthy assets. But to have any development with her, Ye Qiu would rather die.
That girl was no less than a female demon, full of crafty ideas. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
To appease Niu Yinyin’s mood, and purely to reward her, Ye Qiu intentionally bought a big bag of snacks for the girl to eat to her heart’s content, passing the time.
Noon arrived quickly, and Chu Yao changed out of her work attire and put on the outfit of the girl-next-door, transforming into a fresh-faced young girl brimming with the vitality of youth.
Yes, this girl’s outfit, paired with her bright, sparkling eyes, was very inviting!
Ye Qiu silently appraised her as Chu Yao stood before him and said, "Sorry to keep you waiting so long, are you sure you want to go?"
Seeing that Ye Qiu had waited for her all morning, Chu Yao was touched, but she knew it wasn’t because Ye Qiu liked her. So why did he agree to accompany her to see her mother?
With this doubt in her heart, Chu Yao wanted to confirm Ye Qiu’s intentions once more.
Ye Qiu nodded and said, "Of course we should go."
Chu Yao stopped refusing. Perhaps Ye Qiu was just acting out of kindness, simply curious about her life. If he found out that she was very ordinary and her family was simple, he probably wouldn’t show much interest anymore.
With her mind in turmoil, Chu Yao walked ahead, leaving Ye Qiu trailing behind her.
It took a while for Chu Yao to realize that the adorable girl Niu Yinyin was still walking beside her.
Niu Yinyin was cute, with big eyes, a round face, and thick eyebrows. She quickly won Chu Yao’s affection. Despite being young, Yinyin was clever and quickly became familiar with Chu Yao.
The three of them walked together, turning past three traffic lights, and arrived at the city hospital.
Upon entering the ward, they were greeted by a distinctive smell. It was a large ward with many beds, all occupied by patients.
Chu Yao’s mother was lying in one of the beds.
Soon, Ye Qiu saw Chu Yao stop in front of a bed and take the hand of the patient on it.
"Xiao Yao, why are you here? Don’t you have classes in the afternoon?"
Before Ye Qiu, the lady who appeared to be in her late fifties struggled to sit up. Seeing Chu Yao, her eyes first lit up with joy, which quickly turned to curiosity.
"Yes, I don’t have classes in the afternoon. Don’t worry, I’ll attend to my studies," Chu Yao said sweetly with a smile, then reached out to tidy her mother’s disheveled hair. As she looked at her mother’s increasingly frail face and the growing number of white hairs, tears of compassion welled up in Chu Yao’s eyes. Her mother had sacrificed and given so much for her, a debt she could never repay in a lifetime.
Especially with her mother’s current illness—fine when not severe, but life-threatening during an attack.
Over the years, despite knowing she was sick, her mother had endured without seeking hospital treatment, just to save some money for her tuition fees. She wouldn’t spend a penny on herself. Now that her mother’s illness had worsened, even if she wanted to endure, she couldn’t anymore.
Chu Yao’s heart ached for her mother, and she hated her own helplessness. Sometimes, Chu Yao thought, if someone cared for her and provided money for her mother’s treatment, she would sacrifice herself to that person. But her mother had sternly told her that a woman must not demean herself. It was her mother’s words that kept reverberating in her ears, making Chu Yao maintain her integrity even through the toughest of times, preventing her from falling into a pit of fire.
Chu Yao’s mother was about to ask why her daughter had unexpectedly come at noon instead of after four in the afternoon, as usual, when her gaze was suddenly drawn to the young man standing beside her.
"Who is he?"
Hearing her mother ask about Ye Qiu, Chu Yao quickly wiped away the tears that had yet to fall and forced a smile, explaining, "Mom, I was just about to introduce you. This is my classmate, Ye Qiu. He found out you were ill and specifically came to visit you."
Chu Yao’s mother sized up Ye Qiu, wondering what was on her mind. As for the classmate relationship her daughter mentioned, having been a mother for decades, she could see something more in their interaction—just from her daughter’s eyes, she sensed that Chu Yao might have feelings for this young man.
"Quite a nice young man, thank you for visiting me," Chu Yao’s mother said to Ye Qiu, nodding with a very gentle tone, devoid of the authority common among elders. Ye Qiu could see that she was an educated and courteous woman, well-mannered in her dealings with others.
"Mother, I have some good news for you; you’ll be able to have surgery soon," Chu Yao said excitedly.
However, upon hearing this, Chu Yao’s mother’s expression turned grim. She looked at Chu Yao sternly and said, "Where did this money come from? Return it to whoever you borrowed it from at once. I don’t want my daughter to go down the wrong path because of me. If that’s the case, I would rather die than use that money."
Chu Yao felt wronged; why would her mother think that way.
In fact, it was understandable for Chu Yao’s mother to be suspicious. Her daughter was just a student—where could she possibly get such a large sum for surgery unless she had taken a bad path.
"Auntie, you’ve misunderstood Chu Yao. In fact, I was the one who lent the money to Chu Yao. You shouldn’t worry; she hasn’t done anything to tarnish the Chu family’s reputation," Ye Qiu suddenly interrupted, breaking the silence between mother and child.
"You are the one who lent it to our Xiao Yao?" Chu Yao’s mother looked at Ye Qiu again.
"Do you want to marry our Xiao Yao?"
"Are you truly fond of her, or are you just looking for a fling?"
"Young man, if you’re not serious about this, you should take your money back. I, an old woman, would rather die than ruin my daughter’s lifelong happiness," Chu Yao’s mother said in a series of statements that left Ye Qiu momentarily speechless. It took him a moment to gather his thoughts, as he realized Chu Yao’s mother must have thought he lent the money to Chu Yao with ulterior motives.
Ye Qiu was at a loss for words. He truly just wanted to do a good deed. With a billionaire’s wealth, taking out a few hundred thousand to help Chu Yao out of her predicament was nothing, and even if he didn’t have the money, he would still find a way to help.
Ye Qiu wasn’t just mindlessly kind—he wouldn’t turn a blind eye to Chu Yao’s plight once he knew about it.
He didn’t want a pair of eyes full of spiritual energy to become clouded, or a kind and quiet girl to be treated as a plaything by others, used as an outlet for their desires.
That would destroy a person, dragging them into the abyss, doomed forever!
