Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 86: The Huge Loss
Chapter 86: Chapter 86: The Huge Loss
After being interrupted, he decided to call his leader that night and report his findings.
He went to take a shower and rest.
The man woke up three hours later and after eating something went back to the window to observe a little before making the phone call. They were using some advanced technology that allowed for calls without the internet.
However, they had to minimize usage to avoid other people and the military from picking up the frequency. That was why he had been waiting to call.
To his astonishment, the thousands of zombies that had crowded the side of the road had dispersed. He didn’t know when they had left, but only a few zombies were there.
What made his blood run cold was the empty crater. He adjusted the binoculars in his hands while trembling to have a clearer look. Indeed, the crater was empty.
Where was the meteorite? What happened to it?
He couldn’t believe his eyes and put the binoculars down to rub his eyes first. He then picked up the binoculars again, but the results were the same. The meteorite was gone.
He had no idea what had happened. He thought that the zombies might have done something, but then remembering that they were mindless creatures, he dismissed the thought.
Then he remembered the two people who had walked into the zombie crowd and felt that the disappearance of the meteorite might be related to them.
Even though he hadn’t seen them walk to the crater, no one could guarantee that they hadn’t. He also didn’t know how they had taken such a big rock with them without being discovered.
However, for the moment, he didn’t have the luxury of thinking too much, he could only report the situation to their leader first and get instructions on what to do.
He knew that he couldn’t avoid punishment for his mistake but if he managed to find the meteorite, and probably the people who took it, he might get a lighter punishment.
Walking back into the room, he picked up a brick-like phone with only two buttons on it and pressed one of the buttons.
There was a dual tone on the other side before he heard a gruff voice, "Have you found it?"
That question made his throat tighten. He wanted to hung up and run but he knew that escaping will only make his life harder. No one could escape from the leader.
"Commander Qiu, I cannot completely confirm the authenticity of the ’Catalyst Core’ but from the behavior and changes of the zombies, it looks like it." The man reported with trepidation in his heart.
"That’s good, it’s probably what we are looking for. You have to be careful and guard it because this will change our future and make us rulers of the world.
Someone will come to transport it soon. Send your coordinates and make sure you don’t touch the catalyst core with your bare hands." Commander Qiu on the other end of the phone instructed.
The man felt his blood almost become solid because of how cold he felt. He knew from the subtle excitement in the tone of the commander that this thing was probably more important than his life. He was really done for.
But no matter how afraid he was, he had to report the truth because hiding it could only be worse.
Taking a deep breath he readied himself to deliver the bad news, but before he could say anything, the commander hung up.
Hearing the dial tone he was shocked. He thought that out of nervousness he had hung up the call but found that it was the commander who had ended it.
He started beating himself up for being slow to report. Because of the restrictions, he couldn’t make another call within twenty-four hours.
He felt relieved that his punishment was delayed and he could use this time to try and track down those two people and probably retrieve the meteorite.
But he was also afraid that he wouldn’t be able to find it before the pickup team arrived. If they don’t find the meteorite, he would still have to be reported. That was worse than reporting it himself.
He was now in a dilemma. He didn’t have the right technology to track down the two people, and after such a long time had passed, the energy signature they left behind had already been erased.
He didn’t even know what they looked like apart from being a man and a woman. How many men and women move together in this city? Looking for those two was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Blaze, as his friends call him had no choice but to leave the room and go drive around to see if he could locate the two culprits.
Unfortunately for him, the two meteorite thieves were already locked in Leng Pan’s apartment and had entered the space to explore the new mansion together.
He was destinied to come up empty-handed. At least, for the time being.
Leng Pan and Lu Zhen sped through the city on their motorcycles and used remote alleys and abandoned roads without any possibility of surveillance in case some technology could still be used to track them and took detours before finally going back to their community.
They were both shaken by their changes and excited about their new find. They could tell that if used well, they meteorite and the crystal shard they picked up could advance their superpowers faster than using the so-called crystal cores.
However, something so heaven-defying was the same as the jade bangle and couldn’t be exposed.
They even worried that bringing it out of the space might bring trouble. So, they planned to study it inside the space.
Once home, they didn’t even greet the rest of the family first before locking the door of their apartment and going straight to the master bedroom where they sat on the bed and Leng Pan brought them into the space.
Standing outside the warehouse in the grassy garden, Lu Zhen was shocked by the changes.
