Chapter 73: Carapace Rider [2]

"Fucker."

As soon as Isabella’s voice rang out, the spears of light slammed into the floor of the massive hall while she dodged left and right, muttering curses in her mind.

Her once platinum-silver hair had been stained black by the corrosive demonic miasma she now possessed, and her formerly crystalline pupils had turned red, the remaining parts of her eyes veiled in shadow.

"Don’t think I’m still helpless, sister," Isabella said, bracing for a counterattack, only for her entire sense of reality to shatter as a presence deliberately slipped into her awareness.

"But you are, aren’t you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have felt so inferior to me." Anica appeared behind her and whispered into her ear, still suspended in the air.

"Screw you."

Isabella swiftly turned and directed a glowing red magic circle toward where Anica stood. With a single swing of Anica’s staff, Isabella was hurled into the wall, her body erupting in waves of unbearable pain.

It felt as if every bone in her body had been shattered again and again.

"How are you so damn stronger than before?"

Anica tilted her head. "Now that I think of it, I do feel pretty energized."

Isabella clenched her teeth, swallowing the agony, and lunged into the air. "Damn you, Anica. Don’t you dare belittle me!"

Anica didn’t flinch, nor did she alter her calm demeanor. "I’m not, sister. You’re simply too weak." freёnovelkiss.com

Anica’s gray eyes glowed intensely as she looked down on Isabella, who was now airborne.

Isabella’s head burned with rage, her rationality peeling away.

Anica gave a faint smile. "Now that’s how you weaponize emotions in battle. But don’t worry, I won’t kill you. I’m still a Saintess Candidate, after all."

Isabella conjured another magic circle mid-air, launching a fireball swallowed in darkness at lightning speed. But with a wave of Anica’s staff, it vanished into nothingness.

"Isa, you’re one of the academy’s strongest. So why exactly are you jealous of me being stronger than you? Are you saying you turned to the dark just for that?"

As soon as she landed, Isabella’s face contorted as Anica continued.

"Then what about those weaker than you? Did they die? Did they turn evil? No. What about the less-talented students who are fighting the disaster you helped cause? Answer me, little sister."

"How should I know? How the hell is that my problem?!"

Anica stared at her, her smile softening even more. "Then that’s enough."

Isabella’s eyes widened, her gaze fixed on the magic circle and the brilliant spell her sister was casting. At that moment, only one set of thoughts echoed in her mind:

’How is this even real? How can someone like her even exist, someone beyond human reasoning?’

The radiant glow formed by four orbs Anica had summoned behind her made Isabella gulp.

Even if she blocked it, her survival wasn’t guaranteed.

’I thought joining the demons would get me to your level... but you really are a monster, sis.’

The golden orbs gleamed even brighter as Anica raised her wand near the high ceiling.

Her gray eyes shimmered with gold as she uttered one word: "Requiem."

The orbs shot out at blinding speed, smashed into the floor, and sent Isabella, along with massive rubble crashing through the lower levels, down to the ground floor.

Silence returned as Anica looked at her palms. "Looks like I used a lot of mana."

She floated gently back to the ground and dismissed her staff.

"Seems like the battle is over," she then added. "Let’s go help Master’s girlfriend, maybe she’s got some chocolate cream on her."

Anica halted abruptly, gazing at the hole in the floor.

"...I should check on her first."

(Inside the Administrative Head’s Office)

"Princess, how much more time do you need?" asked the young man who had been the first to join the assault, shielding her from the drifter’s attack. But Frieren gave no reply.

It had been a while since the battle began, and she had to enter spirit mode as soon as possible, but that was easier said than done.

’Damn it,’ Frieren cursed inwardly, her breathing growing increasingly uneven.

Her mana particles were beginning to surge chaotically, but she had to press on. She didn’t have the luxury of stabilizing it, not during a battle where the lives of her followers hung in the balance.

She didn’t care that much about saving people, but she had sworn an oath. That meant Kai had to make do with the remains of the mana beast and the dragon she was about to slay.

And from the tremor she could feel from where she sat cross-legged, she knew Anica had finished her fight with her sister.

The young man, standing in front of Frieren in his sleek combat suit and wielding a heavy steel shield, glanced back at the stunning princess, and couldn’t stop himself from swallowing hard.

’What if the princess doesn’t follow through? Would she have to redeem herself some other way? Maybe I could become her knight and...’

His thoughts froze as Frieren’s previously shut eyes slowly opened.

"Princess?" he asked, slowly backing away.

Her stealth-optimized combat armor began turning white as frost crept through the room.

Within seconds, the dark chamber was swallowed by ice.

The man just stood there, speechless. The other students could only avert their gazes, not daring to look at the princess, though some did, their gazes filled with awe.

In an instant, four spirits appeared behind her: a tiger, a tortoise, an ice-water dragon, and a phoenix.

"Return to the spirit world, Cyrus."

At her command, the wolf spirit lowered his head and obeyed.

The dragon locked eyes with her, trying his best to resist the urge to bow in reverence.

Its lips parted as it asked, "Who are you, child of man? You look human, yet you don’t speak like one. And the energy radiating from you... it’s far from human."

Frieren tilted her head. "A beast that speaks? Well... I suppose I can humor you for a moment."

She took one step forward, and the four spirits aligned behind her, intensifying her already godlike aura.

"I am Frieren Hohenzollern, Princess of the Empire. Daughter of Frederick Hohenzollern the Great. And the fiancée of Kaiser Vanguard."

The dragon gave a nod. "So, you’re Frederick’s daughter?" A faint grin crossed its face. "Then for your father’s sake, I will give everything I have, great warrior."

"Then I will have to thank you for the lesson."

The dragon burst into laughter. "Hahaha! Just like your old fart, I see! Then let us begin."
