Chapter 52 - Sakazuki Arrives

Just as the golden staff was about to strike the pirate captain's wrist, a layer of dark Armament Haki suddenly coated his entire forearm.

Enel's powerful Observation Haki caught it instantly. Without hesitation, he transformed into lightning and flashed to the side, his brows drawing together in a frown.

Seeing Enel dodge, the pirate captain's twisted grin grew wider. With casual ease, he shifted Zephyr's son to his left arm, then drew a longsword from his waist with his right hand.

Hum—

A wave of Armament Haki flowed across his arm, sheathing both his limb and the sword in a deep black hue.

He stared at Enel across the deck.

"Come on, kid. Let's see what you've got."

Enel's expression turned serious. Sparks danced from his fingertips as lightning surged through his body. His golden staff softened and reshaped itself. In an instant, it split into two short blades—daggers, sharp and deadly.

Without a word, he vanished. In a flash, he appeared behind the pirate captain, a faint trail of electricity crackling on the ground where he once stood. The dagger in his right hand shot toward the man's heart. The one in his left aimed for the kidney.

Clang!

The captain had no time to react, but his upper body was already reinforced with Haki. The daggers struck the hardened shell, throwing sparks into the air.

He spun around with a wild swing of his sword. A loud crack tore through the air as he slashed, but hit nothing.

Zzzzt—!

A burst of current rang out as Enel reappeared, standing atop the pirate captain's sword. With both daggers, he lunged straight for the man's eyes. The captain quickly raised his left arm—the one still holding the child—to block the strike.

Clang!

The twin blades struck his forearm, but he didn't flinch. Instead, he grinned and said, "Brat, take a look at this."

He nodded toward the child trapped in his left hand.

Enel's eyes shifted. The pirate's grip tightened slightly. The purple-haired child began to struggle more violently, his face turning deep red. The boy's presence, as sensed through Enel's Observation Haki, was weakening fast.

Still, Enel didn't move. His blades stayed pressed firmly against the captain's Haki-covered forearm. His eyes locked onto the pirate's.

The pirate captain smirked at the calm marine boy in front of him, already imagining a hundred ways to torture him. But then, just for a moment, he caught a strange glint in the boy's eyes before everything went black.

A sharp voice rang out by his ear.

"Thunder-Heat Blade."

Pain exploded through his arm. First came the numbness, then the searing agony.

"Aaaaaaaahhhhhh! Someone! Kill this damn brat!"

Screaming in rage, the captain thrashed wildly with his sword. Pirates swarmed onto the deck, charging at the young marine holding the child.

...

Just moments earlier.

Enel had stared deeply into the pirate captain's eyes. In a flash of inspiration, he concentrated his power into his gaze.

The second the pirate looked back at him with that mocking grin, lightning burst from his eyes and struck him directly. Then, he channeled energy into both golden daggers.

With the fusion of lightning and heat, he slashed with all his strength. The pirate captain's forearm was severed in an instant, flying through the air.

Enel caught the detached limb and rescued Zephyr's son, pulling him into his arms.

With a swift motion, he passed the right dagger to his left hand, and activated his Devil Fruit. The two golden daggers melted and writhed, merging into a miniature version of the Ark Maxim.

He tossed the child into the air, his body flashing into a streak of lightning. In the next instant, he reappeared with a bundle of clothes in hand.

He laid the clothes over the small ark like a cushion. Then he caught the falling child and gently placed him on top. His hand rested on the boy's head as he whispered, "I'll come pick you up soon, okay? Be good."

Placing one palm on the ark, he surged lightning into it. The propellers whirred to life, spinning at full speed. The miniature ark shot into the sky, vanishing into a dot high above, where it hovered silently.

With the child safe, Enel unleashed his full power. He looked at the wave of enemies rushing toward him. His body turned to pure lightning, elementalized in an instant. The blazing light in his eyes made him look like a god casting down judgment.

With his Devil Fruit activated, a web of lightning silently spread across the ground, too fine to see with the naked eye. As the pirates closed in, Enel raised a thunder-forged dagger. He ran it along the web of lightning embedded in the ground.

A sudden flash of blue light blinded the attackers. Then their vision dropped violently.

A headless body entered their view.

'That looks familiar... Isn't that me?'

And with that final thought, darkness swallowed them whole. Like stalks of wheat being harvested, the pirates fell in rows, heads severed cleanly from their bodies.

The gruesome sight instantly stopped the charge of the remaining pirates in their tracks. Cold sweat poured down their faces like buckets of water dumped over their heads. Fear surged in their chests, suffocating and unstoppable.

Even the pirate captain, whose eyes had been scorched blind by Enel's lightning, sensed something was terribly wrong.

The shouts had vanished. The stench of blood filled the air.

'Damn it...'

Panic crept into his heart. He pinched his thumb and forefinger together and placed them in his mouth.

Whii—! Whii—! Whi—

Before the third sharp whistle could finish, a spear of lightning pierced through his arm and throat in a blinding instant. He collapsed, writhing and howling on the ground in agony.

Boom!

The spear shot past him and struck a ship behind, erupting in a violent explosion. The vessel was torn apart by the blast and plunged beneath the waves.

Enel's glowing eyes swept coldly across the battlefield as he rose into the air. Lightning surged from his body like a storm made flesh. He raised his arms, and with a flick of his fingers, spears of pure lightning materialized one after another and rained down.

Boom!

BOOM!

The thunder spears slammed into the sea and land, each impact deafening, each explosion leaving only ruin behind.

From above, Enel's eyes looked down, indifferent, like a god judging the mortals below. In just moments, the pirates were all annihilated by divine lightning.

But he didn't let his guard down.

From deep within the island, a powerful presence was rapidly approaching.

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

Four crescent-shaped slashes of sword energy suddenly cut through the air, targeting him mid-flight.

Enel flickered out of their path in a flash of lightning, his body dissipating into raw elements, then reformed in place with a faint crackle, eyes fixed on the one who had attacked.

Out from the treeline charged a disheveled man. Older than the pirate captain from earlier, and bearing a clear resemblance to him. His clothes were untidy, as if he'd just rushed out in the middle of something, and in his hand was a long blade.

The man swept his Observation Haki through the battlefield but couldn't sense his younger brother's presence.

His eyes turned bloodshot as he looked up at Enel in the sky.

"You bastard...How dare you—HOW DARE YOU! AAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!"

His furious roar was laced with hysteria, reason drowned beneath a tidal wave of rage.

In that moment, it was as if a gate had burst open inside him. A suffocating wave of killing intent erupted like a storm, layered with violent Conqueror's Haki that roared toward the boy in the sky.

Enel's form trembled in midair, flickering for a split second, his stance unsteady. He felt it clearly: that pressure stabbing into his mind like a lance.

'Conqueror's Haki...' he narrowed his eyes.

This swordsman was clearly far stronger than the pirate captain from before. A direct clash would be dangerous. He was already thinking through solutions—until his Observation Haki caught something.

His body relaxed slightly as he floated down toward the ground, landing light as a feather. He looked at the swordsman and sneered with a trace of mockery in his expression.

The pirate swordsman, now completely unhinged, saw the disdain in Enel's face and erupted with fresh killing intent.

Conqueror's Haki surged out again, this time more violently, shaking the surrounding air like a quake. Armament Haki coursed through his arms, coating the gleaming blade of the Great Grade Sword Yunkiri in a dark, deadly sheen.

Eyes bloodshot and locked onto Enel, he roared, "You little—!!"

BOOM!!!

It was like a meteor had fallen behind him. A deafening roar erupted like a volcanic explosion, accompanied by a scorching wave of heat.

Then came the crushing pressure.

An overwhelming wave of Conqueror's Haki swept through the battlefield, ruthlessly obliterating the swordsman's newly awakened aura.

He froze.

Completely paralyzed by the weight of that power, locked in place, as if the heavens themselves had pinned him to the earth.

A calm, emotionless voice sounded behind him. "And what, exactly, were you planning to do to that kid?"

It was so quiet, so casual, like someone asking a corpse a question. Then two massive hands landed on his shoulders.

Crunch!

The sickening sound of bone being pulverized echoed in the air.

Rip!

In one brutal motion, Sakazuki tore both of the pirate swordsman's arms clean off, sending them spinning into the sky.

His right leg stepped forward, coated in dense Armament Haki.

Two shadowy afterimages flashed by.

BOOM!

A grotesque sound of meat bursting—both of the swordsman's legs exploded into clouds of red mist. His mangled torso dropped from the air, but Sakazuki caught it with one hand around his neck, then passed it to his left.

With a twist, he turned the broken body to face him.

Sakazuki's left hand gripped the man's neck like an iron vice, lifting him to shoulder height.

He looked into the swordsman's eyes, cold and indifferent. Then, slowly, his right hand reached upward. And pressed down on the top of his head.

Crack.

Like lifting the lid off a pot. The swordsman's eyes widened in pure, paralyzing terror as Sakazuki's fingers dug into his skull.

A moment later, the pain came—an unbearable, mind-ripping agony.

And then, blackness. Endless, suffocating blackness.

Bang!
