Chapter 272: A Mysterious Phone Call

I tried to be strong so I stopped crying. I was getting tired of being the damsel in distress while our enemies laugh at us.

I would not allow that man to win again. He already took my kids from me. I would not allow him to take Jayden, too.

Missy came when I asked her to. She was with me ever since we were young so I was sure she wouldn’t betray me. Her father worked with Jonathan so we both knew he wouldn’t help us. It would raise suspicion if we ask him about the Trekker Clan so we decided to keep it to ourselves.

"I know it’s silly to ask you, but how are you?" Missy asked.

My lips started to tremble and I was going to cry again. I felt my heart ache thinking about Jayden. I kept on thinking about how he was at the moment. Was he tied up? Blindfolded? Was he getting tortured? Different images of him being beaten and tortured were making me crazy.

"Be strong, Peggy. He did it for you and Caden." Missy whispered.

I knew that already. And that was more painful. I didn’t see his struggles. I was occupied by his illness and my foster father. I should have consulted him about it. I should have asked him for help so he didn’t feel worthless.

"Are you feeling guilty now?" I heard a cold tone behind me and I knew it was Alora.

When I turned around, she was staring at me with her cold gaze. She was wearing a black above-the-knee halter top dress. Her long wavy silver hair was swaying as she walked toward me.

"I-I" I stuttered.

I didn’t know what to say to her. I knew as Jayden’s wife, I failed him.

"Don’t blame yourself. It’s no one’s fault. Let’s focus on finding him." Alora continued.

I nodded and was able to hold back my tears. We went to Luke’s office and all our friends were there.

Sophie hugged me tightly. She didn’t ask me anything or comment on what happened. She just smiled at me and pulled me to the couch.

Luke, Percy and Andrew were on the desk looking at something. I stayed silent and was just observing everyone inside the room.

I felt so lost without my kids and now, without Jayden. Why did it always feel this way? You would only appreciate someone when they were gone.

I had complicated feelings toward him because of his frequent switching of identities. But now that he’s gone and thinking about the possibility that I could never see him again breaks my heart.

There were a lot of things that I should have done. I was selfish and insensitive. We vowed to love each other, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer. We made a promise to be together for eternity. But I failed. I failed to protect him. I failed to understand what he had been dealing with.

"I think we should look into this place first." I heard Percy say.

I didn’t realize they were looking at me while I think about being a failure.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t hear anything." I said.

Andrew sighed and slightly smiled. "Peggy, you need to be strong. Jayden would not last long if you’re like that. As we speak, they might be torturing him."

"Hey!" Missy shouted.

"What? It’s the truth. We already knew that her foster father is an evil man. Do you think he considered Jayden his son-in-law? I don’t think so. She has to be strong if she wants to see her husband alive." Andrew explained.

I was taken aback. I already knew that Jayden’s life was in Jonathan’s hands. I shouldn’t waste my time thinking of unnecessary things. It would not help me save Jayden.

"I’m sorry. Can you repeat everything you said?" I asked.

Andrew nodded. "We found five places owned by your foster father. They were most likely their hideouts. Again, it’s just a possibility. We’re still unsure but there’s a seventy percent chance that Jayden is in one of those places."

My heart skipped upon hearing it. It’s not a hundred but seventy was still good news.

"I want to go." I said.

"What? Are you crazy?" Missy exclaimed.

"If Jayden is in there, I want him to see me first."

"Peggy, it’s dangerous. I understand you want to save him badly, but you might jeopardize the operation if you’re there." Percy commented.

I shook my head. "I won’t. And besides, I know how to use guns. I can protect myself."

Andrew and Percy glanced at Luke. They waited for his decision since he had the final say in everything.

Luke sighed. "Fine. But please always stay close to us. Jayden and your brother will kill me if something happened to you."

I slightly smiled at him. I knew he was trying to soften the mood and it did help a little.

We were startled by the sound of a phone call. We looked at each other confused. All our phones were on the table and they weren’t ringing.

We searched where the sound came from and my eyes widened when I realised it was coming from my bag.

Luke opened it and there we saw a small black phone. It was an old Nokia phone and the number was unknown.

"Should I answer it?" I asked.

"Well, they put it in your bag so I think the call is for you." Andrew commented.

I nodded and took the phone from Luke’s hands to answer it.

"Hello? Who is this?" I asked.

There was a long silence on the other line before I heard a man’s voice.

"Hello, princess."

The tone was cold but clear, making my heart beat fast. I became anxious when I felt the chills run through my spine.

"Who are you? And how did you put this phone in my bag?" I asked.

The man chuckled. "It doesn’t matter how. What matters now is your husband’s life."

I felt like my heart would burst to hear those words from an unknown person. I didn’t feel a thing when I bit my lip to stop it from trembling.
