Kiss the Scumbag-Chapter 79
“Welcome, Mr. Campbell. It’s an honor to meet you.”
The moment Winston stepped out of the car, the police chief who had been waiting hurriedly greeted him and extended his hand. Instead of shaking it, Winston gave a brief nod and brushed past him, heading straight into the police station. The chief hastily withdrew his hand, feeling embarrassed, and hurried after him, opening the way while speaking.
“I was informed in advance, but Sam was on patrol. I asked him to be here on time since this is important, but he hasn’t arrived yet. He said he’s on his way, so if you wait a bit...”
Flustered and unsure of what to do, the chief was met with no response from Winston. He led Winston to his office and quickly ordered a staff member to bring coffee and snacks. Soon, a staff member returned with a paper cup containing lukewarm brewed coffee that gave off a cheap scent. Naturally, Winston didn’t even glance at the coffee placed on the table. Seeing his reaction, the chief anxiously asked,
“Shall I prepare something else? Juice, maybe there’s juice...”
“That’s fine.”
Winston stopped the chief, who was about to rush to the door in a flurry, and for the first time opened his mouth, but that was all. Then, closing it again, he crossed his legs on the metal guest chair and took a cigarette case out of his suit pocket. Seeing this, the chief panicked and held up both hands, waving them rapidly.
“Oh, no. This is a non-smoking area. I’m sorry. Truly, I’m sorry.”
There was absolutely no reason for him to apologize. It was Winston who broke the rules, and enforcing it was practically his right.
But how could he dare?
The other party was Winston Campbell. Telling him no required tremendous courage. Though the chief thought he had somehow managed to act this way, he was sweating nervously, looking pale and unsure. Thankfully, Winston silently put the cigarette case back into his pocket.
Just then, the chief sighed with relief and wiped the sweat from his forehead. A brief knock sounded and someone opened the door. Winston and the chief both turned their heads almost simultaneously, but the face waiting was not the one they expected.
“Chief, just a moment...”
The staff member who opened the door waved awkwardly to the chief, who greeted her halfheartedly as if he’d been waiting, then hurriedly left the room. Left alone, Winston resisted the urge to smoke and instead folded his hands on his lap. The worn, shabby chief’s office carried a peculiar musty smell. Mixed with the cheap coffee aroma, it only worsened his mood.
Pathetic.
He thought about himself sitting alone in a place like this and felt absurd. After Harold’s death, Winston had been busier than ever, almost to death’s door. Beyond company matters, he had to handle funeral arrangements and asset management. Although lawyers, estate managers, and secretaries practically took care of the movements, Winston had to know every detail and ultimately make every decision. And now, he had forcibly cleared his tight schedule just to come here and stare at a wall. His fatigue was mounting, yet what was he even doing?
What was he expecting?
Winston’s eyes narrowed unpleasantly. Yujin’s criminal record was true. He had assaulted a client he prostituted to, robbed money, and fled, getting caught. He was tried but not punished severely. That was because a certain police officer had pleaded for leniency on his behalf, exhausting every effort.
Sam Brown.
He slowly repeated the name he’d heard from his secretary. The report didn’t specify why the police officer who arrested Yujin had gone so far to help the criminal he apprehended himself, but Winston thought he knew exactly why. He must have been bewitched too.
Wasn’t it obvious? When Yujin asked him for «N.o.v.e.l.i.g.h.t» help with his body as payment, the man wouldn’t have refused. Maybe the deal had been made from the very moment of arrest. Moreover, Yujin lived with him for a while after gaining freedom. What better proof could there be? Such a perfect story.
So why did he come all the way here?
Deep wrinkles formed on Winston’s brow. What did he want to confirm? Didn’t he already know enough? It was proven enough that his suspicions were right.
Thinking of Yujin laughing and kissing a man he didn’t even know made his stomach boil. He could feel his pheromone scent intensifying around himself. He knew. He knew exactly what emotion had dragged him here.
He still couldn’t give up.
Disgust toward himself welled up. That was enough. No, it was excessive. Get a grip, Winston Campbell. You promised not to be a fool swayed by Yujin anymore.
Without waiting any longer, Winston stood up. Just then, a knock came, followed by the door opening.
“Winston Campbell? Sorry I’m late, the traffic was terrible.”
Winston stared blankly at the lively figure smiling as she greeted him. His head wasn’t working right for a moment. What? What was going on? Unable to respond immediately, he just kept staring, while the woman continued.
“You came to see me? What is it about?”
Though the face bore the marks of time, the mischievous smile was pure and innocent like a child’s. Winston was at a loss for words for a while but then slowly spoke.
“...Sam Brown?”
The other nodded.
“Yes, that’s right. What can I do for you?”
Winston still gazed at the smiling face of the elderly woman repeating the same words, lost in thought.
“Today was truly delightful, Your Highness.”
At sunset, Georgina clasped her hands over her chest and said with genuine admiration.
“Will there be another chance for an audience? I want to see the princess again.”
Blinking her eyes pleadingly, Georgina was met with Angela nodding without losing her dignity until the very end.
“Of course, my lady. Next time, I shall invite you to a banquet. Please do not refuse.”
The moment Angela finished speaking, Georgina beamed and raised her voice.
“Oh, refuse? Princess, I’m already looking forward to that day. I might get an illness waiting every day for an invitation from you. I’ll make Thomas check the mailbox ten times a day. I’m already dizzy just thinking about it.”
She elegantly acted as if she was feeling faint, wiping her forehead with the back of her hand, but Angela seemed displeased. Angela looked up at Georgina seriously and slightly nodded. When Georgina leaned forward in confusion, Angela covered her mouth with her hand and whispered softly into her ear.
“Who is Thomas?”
Georgina barely held back a laugh, covered her mouth as Angela did, and whispered seriously.
“He’s my servant, does odd jobs.”
“Oh, I see.”
Having gotten the scenario right, Angela returned to her solemn expression and raised her chin.
“Tell Thomas to come to the palace. I will personally deliver an invitation.”
“Oh, Princess! How thoughtful of you...”
Yujin watched the ongoing play between Georgina and his daughter from a few steps away, a tired expression on his face. They had literally been acting like that all afternoon. Yujin and Charlotte, who humored them to some extent, had already collapsed long ago, but Angela and Georgina showed no sign of tiring. Rather, Angela was delighted to have found the perfect playmate and was pouring her heart and soul into her acting.
“She’s really cute and smart.”
Watching the two quietly, Charlotte whispered softly beside him. Yujin awkwardly smiled, about to greet her but paused. Charlotte’s expression as she looked at Angela was unusual. Seeing her endlessly sad and pitiful face, Yujin blinked in confusion, and Charlotte opened her mouth, still watching the child.
“I wonder what it feels like to have a child. It must feel like having the whole world...”
Seeing the loneliness on her face, Yujin was at a loss. What would be a good response? He didn’t know much about Charlotte, so it was hard to start a conversation.
“Um...”
“Your Majesty!”
Fortunately, just as he began to speak, Angela called out. Yujin silently sighed in relief and quickly turned his attention to his daughter. Charlotte continued to watch them quietly.
