Chapter 297: Chapter 297 Shameless Resort to Violence (5)_1
"Yanyan, you’ve worked hard!"
Mo Qingze climbed onto the carriage and, seeing the corner full of liquor jars, couldn’t resist patting her on the head.
"What are you saying, Dad? It’s just brewing a few jars of rice wine, how is that hard work!" Mo Yan hugged her father’s arm, smiling merrily as she spoke.
Mo Qingze chuckled and said no more. Every time he returned or Yanyan visited, she would bring him some rice wine or fruit wine; he could never finish it all by himself. He told her several times not to keep bringing it, but the next time, she would still deliver.
Eventually, at Zhiyun’s reminder, he took some to the Academy to share with classmates. Over time, those who were not particularly friendly to him became much friendlier, and whenever he had questions that he didn’t understand, they answered patiently.
Even the teachers received some from him. There seemed to be no change on the surface, but he could feel that the teachers paid more attention to his studies.
He was quite obtuse when it came to interpersonal relationships, and if it weren’t for Zhiyun’s timely reminder, he might never have understood Yanyan’s well-intended efforts.
...
Early in the morning, the streets weren’t crowded, and Little Black moved quickly. It wasn’t long before they arrived at the shop’s entrance. Mo Yan and Liyan got off the carriage, while Lizhong continued driving Mo Qingze to the Academy.
Mo Yan took out her keys to unlock the door and, together with Liyan, wiped down everything with a cloth. Next, they rinsed rice and set it in the steamer basket. When Lizhong returned, together they moved the large stove to the door, set up the pot, and started steaming the rice.
As the sun rose in the east, the number of passersby on the street slowly increased. Everyone who passed by was attracted by the aroma of Mo’s Fragrant Rice. Those not in a hurry even approached to strike up a conversation. Upon seeing the plump grains in the rice barrel, they were tempted, remarking that they should have their wives come here to buy grain in the future.
Perhaps it was the aroma of the rice, or maybe it was the free publicity from yesterday’s customers who had bought rice, but the business that morning was exceptionally good, even better than the previous day, which delighted Mo Yan.
In the afternoon, there were fewer people on the street, yet business was somewhat better than the previous afternoon, particularly the eggs which sold very well. Seeing that after two days of sales, the shop’s stock of rice and eggs was almost depleted, Lizhong hurriedly went to the warehouse to bring more.
Seeing the family’s rather luxurious carriage being used both for transport and to carry goods hurt Mo Yan’s heart, so she decided to buy another horse and a flatbed for hauling goods.
Therefore, taking advantage of the slower customer traffic and with Liyan watching the shop, Mo Yan and Lizhong went to the Southern Market. In the end, they only spent five taels and five coins of silver to buy a milling horse and a sturdy flatbed.
The horse was a jujube red color, used for milling just like Little Black, but it was a bit taller. As it was older and no longer had the strength for milling, its previous owner sold it.
When Mo Yan first saw it, she was struck by the alarming scars on its body. What truly persuaded her to buy this old horse, who was close to death, was the sadness and despair in its eyes.
Compared to Little Black at the start, this horse seemed to possess a touch more wisdom.
Mo Yan, unable to bear the thought of it dying in a stable or being killed for meat after a lifetime of hard labor, spent two silver to purchase it.
When the two returned and Lizhong, who was sitting outside, saw a crowd gathered at the front of the store from afar, his heart skipped a beat. He quickly urged Little Black to move faster.
Little Black flicked its ears and, dodging pedestrians, hastened its pace.
"Get out of here quick, or I’ll sweep you out!"
Hearing Liyan’s angry voice, Mo Yan hurriedly opened the carriage door and, seeing the situation at the entrance of the shop, grew tense as well.
