Chapter 59: Abby, You’re In Big Trouble!
As Sawyer was about to invite her into the cabin because the temperature was dropping, Abigail called his name.
"Sawyer—"
"Yes...?"
"I can’t open my heart so fast to a man. The wound that man carved into my heart is still fresh. I don’t know when I’ll be able to recover and trust a man again." Abigail lowered her gaze, unable to meet his eyes.
"I’m sorry, Sawyer. I hope you are willing to understand me..." she continued, her voice barely audible.
Still, Sawyer heard her clearly. "It’s fine, Abby. I understand. I know that man hurt you deeply."
"Thank you for being honest about your feelings and then understanding me even when I don’t respond the way you hoped, Sawyer," Abigail slowly lifted her head to meet his gaze. This time, a weak smile appeared on her lips. "Please, give me more time to heal from this pain. I will try to move on from that jerk as quickly as possible!"
Seeing Sawyer smile back at her warmed her heart, "And when that time comes, I will open my heart to you, Sawyer—" She wanted to say that, but somehow, all the words stuck in her throat.
Although Abigail’s love for Ryland had faded entirely, the trauma of trusting another man still lingered in her heart. She feared that the man she might trust and love again could betray her just as Ryland had.
When Sawyer heard her words, a warm breeze swept through his heart. "You respond finely, Abby. I don’t feel hurt at all. I guess we are best pals for now. And as your best pal, I will do anything to help you heal faster. I will help you. You have my word."
"I will look forward to it," Abigail replied. She couldn’t ignore the strange feelings that arose whenever she was with him.
A few times, Sawyer’s kindness and gentleness began to confuse her. Yet, Abigail was too afraid to start a new relationship and open her heart to Sawyer. It didn’t feel right to consider him a boyfriend so soon after her relationship with Ryland ended. It wouldn’t be fair to this kind and gentle man.
After honestly expressing their feelings, Abigail and Sawyer began to relax, and their awkwardness slowly faded.
Tonight, the mountain’s sky is clear. And Abigail enjoyed the fantastic starry sky, which seemed so close that it felt almost within her reach. The full moon appeared clear and enormous—something she had never experienced while living in the city.
"This place is breathtaking. No wonder you enjoy this lifestyle, Sawyer," she said, keeping her gaze fixed on the sky. freēnovelkiss.com
"You’re right. This is one of the reasons I wish to stay in this remote area, far from the city," he replied, looking at her. "But, Abby, you’ll be even more amazed by the scenery in the morning."
She straightened up and looked at him. "I could faintly hear the river flow from here. Is there a river view from here?"
"Yes, and on the backdrop, there is the massive mountain across the river. We’ll see it tomorrow."
Her eyes lit up as she imagined the beauty that awaited her.
"By the way, do you want some dessert?" he asked, noticing her lost thought.
"Dessert? Yeah, sure! What do you have for dessert?"
"Give me a minute. Let me check inside," Sawyer got up from his seat. "Wait here; I’ll be back quickly."
Abigail smiled like a giddy teenager as she watched Sawyer walk away and disappear behind the door. Knowing that Sawyer had feelings for her made her heart swell. Indescribable joy kept a smile on her lips, even though she tried to hold it back.
’Oh, Abby, you’re in big trouble! How can you give him hope? Are you sure you can open your heart to a man again after what Ryland did to you?’
Taking a deep breath, Abigail turned her gaze toward the flame. She reached for a piece of wood to stoke the fire back to life, but Sawyer’s worried voice interrupted her before she could set it down.
"Watch out, don’t get burned, Abby!" he said, walking quickly towards her. "Let me do it."
"I’m fine," Abigail replied with a smile as she watched him take the wood from her hand and place it on the fire. He then handed her a medium cup of vanilla ice cream.
"You should wear gloves when handling the wood, or you might get burned," he explained; his concern could be heard in his tone, causing Abigail to stifle a laugh at the amusing look on his face.
She didn’t respond but simply nodded. "Thanks for the ice cream."
"You’re welcome," Sawyer replied, sipping his cold beer while keeping his gaze on her.
...
The crackling fire consumed the dry wood, creating a warm atmosphere.
After sipping nearly half his beer, Sawyer smiled as he watched Abigail finish her vanilla ice cream.
"Abby, what time are you going to visit your grandma tomorrow?" he asked.
"Can we get there before eleven?" Abigail replied, tossing her empty cup into the trash bin.
Abigail needed to meet Aunt Rosa tomorrow to ask her about the CCTV footage. She was still curious about who had covered her grandmother’s hospital expenses.
Only Ryland and her father knew about her grandmother’s condition. She was sure that Ryland didn’t for it, and it was doubtful her father had either.
If her father had paid, he would have called her immediately, but he hasn’t contacted her until now.
The only way to determine who had settled the bill was to view the CCTV footage. However, she was concerned about whether the hospital would grant her access to see it. Her next step was to talk to Aunty Rosa about this.
"Of course. The distance from this place to the nursing home is only forty-five minutes. We can leave at nine or ten in the morning..."
"Ten would be fine. That way, I can make breakfast before we go," Abigail started to plan their meal for the next day.
"If you insist, I won’t refuse, Abby. I know you’re a talented cook." He sounded excited.
"Compared to your grilled meat, I wouldn’t say I’m talented."
Sawyer’s laughter echoed, prompting Abigail to laugh along with him.
"Anyone can grill meat. It doesn’t require talent, just good-quality ingredients and attention to detail," he replied.
"That’s not entirely true, particularly about the quality of the ingredients. If someone is bad at marinating and grilling, no matter how expensive the meat is, it won’t taste as good."
Abigail could prove it; Ryland had never cared about cooking or stepping foot in the kitchen. He did spend lavishly on expensive premium meat and loved barbecue. The one time he tried grilling on the barbecue, the beef was overcooked and tasted like sweet rubber because of the lack of seasoning in the marinated sauce.
