World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 49: Parting Ways
"Get over here. We need to remove the corpses stuck here."
The bearded man said, pointing at the buses.
The spikes he had created on the bodies of the buses were now piled with zombies. Some were already dead, while a few were still struggling to move.
Leon walked over to Fel, took her spear, then began to push the zombies out of the spikes.
The others also got to work, dragging them off the buses. After removing every zombie and killing the rest, the original group of five gathered together.
"Looks like we’re safe for now. We should get going." Samson said impatiently. He wanted to leave the university as fast as he could and embark on the search for his daughter.
Selene partially agreed with him, but there was something that needed to be done first.
"Spoils hunting. Go collect your own drops." Leon said and immediately turned to the killer zombies he had killed.
Beside each of them were rewards that the Star Stream had dropped.
Selene went back to the corpse of the mutant zombie and searched around it. Soon, she found a scroll and a treasure cube.
After checking the scroll, she deemed it useful, and instantly learnt it. Then, she crushed the treasure cube. A beautiful silver gown with some intricate armor designs appeared in her hands, and she was stunned to discover that it was a Tier One treasure.
She immediately folded it and kept it inside her bag, reminding herself to wear it once she had the chance to change.
The others also went around picking random rewards that had been dropped by their kills. In the end, Leon’s squad got the most rewards.
Their levels were pretty average compared to the top five, so the zombies proved to be a challenge for them.
And the Star Stream naturally rewarded a person’s effort and struggles.
Leon kept his own rewards without checking them at all, then regrouped with the others.
"We can’t linger for long. We should get going." Reymond said as he sheathed his new sword.
The others had also gotten a few things, but that wasn’t their focus right now.
They all agreed with him and immediately got into the buses. This time, Samson drove the first bus with vigor and rushed straight at the looming gates.
Naturally, the gates were locked, but he just rammed the bus through them, ripping the locks apart.
Inside the buses, the students cheered as they finally came out of the university. It felt like escaping hell.
Unfortunately, they didn’t escape into heaven either. It was just a different hell they had escaped into.
Through the windows, everyone could see the streets outside.
They almost couldn’t believe what they were seeing even though the reality was right before them.
The main streets that had previously been crowded to the point where it looked like a shopping district during day and night were now devoid of any signs of human life.
The cars that used to zoom through the streets while making noises were still present, but they were no longer moving at all.
Most were covered in dust, looking like they had been abandoned for years.
Dozens of cars had crashed into buildings, shops, lamp posts, traffic lights. The street was a total mess with broken glass, crashed cars, fiberglass, and some houses and shops that had been knocked down by trucks or heavy-duty vehicles.
As far as the survivors could see, they could already see dried bloodstains everywhere as well as several hundred corpses strewn along the street and on the sidewalk in a careless manner.
Some had been run over by a car when the chaos erupted while others had been eaten by zombies or some other monster as bestial bites and torn limbs could be seen on many of them.
Pieces of limbs were strewn across the ground, painting a horrifying image of what had happened when the apocalypse started.
All the excitement they felt a few minutes earlier after finally leaving the university disappeared and the students’ eyes were filled with wariness and horror at such an apocalyptic view.
"Oh well, this surely looks bad~"
Thyra mused as she sat beside Leon in the bus. He was also looking outside, and what he saw made his expression darken.
’This looks even worse than the campus.’
He was hit with a pang of worry about Clara, but he forcefully suppressed the feeling.
’I can’t work efficiently while being worried. She’s alive—believe that.’
Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath, then got down from the bus.
Selene, Gwen, Reymond, and Samson also got down to say their farewell to each other.
Samson smiled and patted Reymond’s shoulder. "Boy, it was really interesting knowing a love-blinded fool like you."
Hooking his arm around his neck, he quietly whispered.
"That girl is cold unlike anything I’ve seen before. But I know she trusts you. Don’t lose that. It might be your only shot."
Reymond’s face turned red, but he didn’t deny it. Instead, he just struggled out of the man’s hold and rolled his eyes.
"You too. You should survive, old man."
Samson laughed and turned to the two girls. "Well, farewell to you two beauties. I hope your journey sails smoothly."
Gwen smiled back and returned his farewell. Meanwhile, Selene only acknowledged him with a nod.
’Tsk... so cold.’
Clearing his throat, he walked up to Leon and shook his hand.
"I can see that you’re eager about meeting your family and knowing if they’re safe. It’s the same for me. I wish you luck."
At that statement, Leon’s gaze towards the man changed, and he felt like he had found a kindred spirit.
"You too, old man." He smiled back.
Scoffing, Samson walked back to the bus with folded arms. "I’m not that old, kids."
He got into the bus, then drove off, taking a different route with the students who were headed to the same area as him.
Gwen lightly walked up to Leon and said, "We’ll be traveling together, so we will be in your care."
He glanced at Selene, then nodded. "I’ll be in your care too."
She smiled brightly, causing two pretty dimples to appear on her cheeks as her eyes curved into crescents.
Seeing her sweet expression in contrast to her charming body, Leon couldn’t help but glance at Thyra.
’They seem similar somehow.’
Shaking his head, he smiled and walked back to the bus.
"We should get going."
