True Incubus: The Demon with No Limits
Chapter 41: A Human.
"Alright, I am ready for the Soul Test."
Lucian agreed, giving himself one last chance. The rest of the people looked at him, then, he was taken to another room.
This one was different from the others, there were no machines, bright monitors, test tubes, or other equipment, there was only a round room with a grey stone floor and a tall mirror standing in the centre.
A dull, old mirror with a silver frame, engraved with thin lines that twisted around each other like roots.
"This is the Argent Mirror."
Dr. Sable explained.
"That is the soul test?"
Lucian raised his eyebrows, at the same time, he looked around the room and frowned inwardly.
There was no knife here, the room itself was smaller, giving him less space to move, it was... more difficult to escape from.
"It is."
"Finally something that looks supernatural, you should have started with this in the first place."
He nodded.
The rest of the beings in the room felt their mouths twitch, even Dr. Sable was no different.
"So what do I do?"
Lucian questioned as he used the excuse to properly look around the room, inwardly looking for a possible weapon.
"Stand in front of it."
Dr. Sable gestured toward the mirror. Lucian looked at her for a second longer, then he nodded and did as he was told.
And the instant he did—
He frowned.
The mirror didn’t show anything.
"One thing I like and it isn’t working?"
He sighed dramatically as he turned his head to look at Sable.
Yes, it was another excuse to keep an eye on the people, he did not feel comfortable showing his back to them.
"It will work, you stand straight."
Dr. Sable instructed, Lucian nodded and in that time, he noticed everyone’s position and the time it would take them to reach him if they were to attack him, then and only then did he turn around, looking at the mirror that showed no reflection.
He was scared.
What if his soul turned out to be that of a demon?
Was he... really Lucian?
Different questions flooded his mind.
But right now, he suppressed that fear with his thirst for revenge, it didn’t matter what he was, as long as it helped him get his revenge, he would accept it—
Even if he was indeed a demon, even if these people came after him, he would get rid of them all and leave.
Alive.
With that thought in his mind, Lucian prepared himself even further, his eyes shining with cold purple.
The mirror in front of him finally reacted, its surface darkened and a single word appeared.
Human.
And...
Lucian, who had been holding himself together all this while, finally let go and closed his eyes in relief.
But he opened them the next instant.
No.
This was not the time.
What if it was a trick?
What if human meant demon, it just showed human so the ’demon’ would let his guard down, giving these people the chance to attack him?
So Lucian turned around, wanting to read it from their faces instead and the instant he did—
He noticed Dr. Sable exhaling softly, somewhat in relief, the woman’s shoulders relaxed, the older man’s face tightened and...
Lucian finally understood it.
He...
He passed.
He was still... him.
He was a human.
Or at least his Soul was.
"How is this even possible...?"
The old man looked confused.
"Through sweat, blood, hard work and sheer dedication."
Lucian answered dramatically as he clenched his fists. Dr. Sable smiled, then she shook her head at how silly they were, the two technicians almost laughed, the woman didn’t show any reaction and the old man’s mouth twitched.
He still did not trust Lucian, but Lucian didn’t care.
He could see the air in the room easing up.
"So? I get to live?"
He questioned.
"You know we weren’t going to kill you even if it showed demon, correct?"
"Is that so...?"
"Yes, we would have only detained you."
"That is worse."
Dr. Sable didn’t say anything to that, she just typed something into her tablet and the band around Lucian’s wrist buzzed slightly.
The words changed.
[Lucian Cross — Blood-Altered Human (Incubus)]
Lucian stared at it and—
"So this is it? 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
This is what I am?
A Blood-Altered Human?"
"Yes."
Sable nodded.
"Why is there a star here?"
Sable looked at him and...
"Possibly dangerous."
She answered honestly.
"But I am a human."
"Sometimes, humans can be far more vile than demons."
Lucian did not deny those words. The thoughts he had just a while ago were more than enough to prove that.
Finally, Dr. Sable looked at her tablet and—
"Name: Lucian Cross.
Blood: Incubus.
Soul: Human.
Legal Classification: Human.
Status: Alive, conscious, unstable.
Recommendation: physical assessment and controlled training."
She read her assessment out loud, mostly for Lucian and he raised his eyebrow.
"You included unstable?"
"Yes."
"Can I appeal to that?"
"No."
"Can I at least suggest emotionally challenged?"
"No."
"Difficult week?"
Dr. Sable looked at him with a deadpan look on her face and finally—
"Unstable it is."
Lucian just gave in.
And for the first time, the technician behind actually laughed out loud, unable to control herself.
Dr. Sable ignored her.
"Alright, now we will start a physical assessment."
"Oh come on, are we not done with all the assessments? Is this a Supernatural Organization or an Experimental Ward?"
Lucian groaned.
"Just come along, would you?"
The doctor sighed.
"Whatever."
Lucian just snorted as he started walking. At this point, the rest of the people who had gathered left, the old man gave Lucian one last look before he walked away, only the doctor remained, she then took him out of the Evaluation Wing, towards another door and just as Lucian thought she was going to open it, she turned towards him and—
"Before you enter the training floor, there is something I need to tell you."
"Is this where you finally confess your true feelings?"
Lucian grinned.
