Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared-Chapter 34 - Honesty disclosure
34: Chapter 34 Honesty disclosure
34 -34 Honesty disclosure
A mid-range, dark blue sedan stopped at the school gate.
After Gu Fan verified its arrival, he got in the car and smiled at Su Hui, who was stunningly beautiful behind the wheel.
He expressed his gratitude, “I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to pick me up from school, Sister Su.
I feel a little embarrassed.”
“No problem.
After all, I’ve been staying at your place for quite some time and causing you a bit of trouble.” While saying this, Su Hui turned her head and cast a dazzling smile at Gu Fan while driving.
Remembering something, Su Hui asked, “You’ve been housing me for quite a while now, and I remember you previously mentioned about worrying that your parents might find out.
Yet, I haven’t seen them around to date.”
Gu Fan replied, “My parents work for a multinational corporation and frequently travel abroad for business.
They’ve been quite busy recently.
Moreover, my younger sister is studying abroad, so most of their focus is on looking out for her.”
“You have a younger sister?” Su Hui looked surprised, then added, “Considering how handsome you are, she must be very pretty too.”
Feeling flattered by Su Hui’s words, Gu Fan proudly voiced, “Indeed, she is a little beauty.
Very charming, which is why both my father and I hope she grows up slowly.”
Su Hui chuckled, “Perhaps you’re not ready to let her leave home.”
Gu Fan nodded in agreement.
When he thinks about his family abroad and the warm moments he shared with them, he can’t help but feel immense gratitude.
He felt incredibly lucky to have such a family, even though it wasn’t as wealthy as Du Jun’s.
He was still very content.
Su Hui confessed her admiration, “Yes, your family is quite amazing, they surely want you to take good care of yourself.”
“Absolutely, if they weren’t working so much and didn’t have to take care of my sister, they would surely be visiting every couple of days to check on me, to see how well I’m managing on my own.” As he spoke, Gu Fan took out his cell phone, looking distressed: “I have to report my life status to them almost every week, otherwise my mom will bombard me with calls.”
“Poor parents in this world, having to worry about their work, then also having to care for your sister.
They want you to live independently, yet they’re also concerned if you could manage things properly on your own.” Su Hui’s words were loaded with a deep feeling that left Gu Fan somewhat confused about why they were discussing family matters so much today.
Then Su Hui added, “Imagine how worried your parents would be if you went missing mysteriously like your classmate.”
On hearing this, Su Hui gave Gu Fan a stern look, signaling him not to evade the topic.
However, Gu Fan just gave a dry laugh, “Thanks for reminding me, Sister Su.
I’ll be sure to stay safe.”
“Don’t worry, I will ensure your safety as well,” Su Hui insured, her smile carrying a hidden depth, her eyes radiating wisdom, as if she had seen through Gu Fan’s thoughts.
Gu Fan immediately expressed his gratitude, “Thanks, Sister Su, for your concern.
With your skills and sharp investigative abilities, plus my own caution, I believe nothing will happen to me.”
“Gu Fan, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe we’ve established our friendship.
As friends, we should help each other, right?” Su Hui’s words grew more profound, making Gu Fan a bit nervous as he felt he was being interrogated.
Not knowing how to respond, he could only listen to Su Hui continue, “If you hide everything from me, how can I help you as a friend?
You’re not planning to vanish next, are you?”
“It seems like you already know, Sister Su,” Gu Fan guessed, his expression returning to calm.
Su Hui nodded, “Your school comes under our jurisdiction, and we’ve already had four missing students.
Our system records all these cases, looking for similarities in the missing persons’ information.
Of course we’d notice that.”
“Alright, I suppose you’ve read the case file for the first missing student then.” Gu Fan heaved a sigh, knowing this was bound to surface eventually, so he faced Su Hui candidly.
Su Hui nodded again, “I have.
It’s quite baffling, which is why I made a point to pick you up today.
I want to hear your account of it— both subjective and objective.
Make it as detailed as possible.
Any tiny detail could be a key to unlocking the case.”
“Alright, I’ll share what I’ve seen.
As for that hidden room, I haven’t been inside; I only know about it from what Lin Xi relayed to me…” Gu Fan narrated the whole incident from his perspective, from beginning to end— including the peculiarly loud elderly man, his premonition that someone else might disappear after their return, the subsequent stalking incidents, his suspicion about the new employee at the school’s supermarket, and even the strange janitorial auntie he just encountered.
Su Hui was all ears, all the while furrowing her eyebrows as if facing a difficult problem.
Gu Fan asked, “What’s wrong, Sister Su?
Judging by your expression, do you think I’m suffering from excessive paranoia about this and that?”
“Your suspicion does hold some logic, just a smidge,” Su Hui’s response was ironic and it left Gu Fan a bit dispirited, resulting in him falling silent.
Su Hui added, “Your case is indeed challenging, just like you said, it feels like someone is deliberately targeting you, but the disappearances are so strange, it seems like these are not ordinary disappearance cases.”
Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in Gu Fan’s head, and he quickly asked, “Sister Su, you’ve handled so many cases, have you ever come across any similar paranormal events, and how did you deal with them?”
Upon hearing this question, Su Hui went silent for quite a while, and her face looked a bit unwell, as if she was recalling some unpleasant memories.
The atmosphere instantly became tense, Gu Fan felt uneasy, but then heard Su Hui say, “In our line of work, we encounter all sorts of things, some of which can’t be explained by existing science, you understand what I mean.”
“I think I understand!” Gu Fan was certain that Su Hui had encountered similar paranormal events before, which explained her calm demeanor.
Those who had been through such experiences indeed had a different level of mental toughness.
“Whether it’s a paranormal event or someone deliberately targeting you, be careful, look out for your own safety.
I can’t always be there to protect you.” Su Hui spoke these words with a hint of pessimism, which sent a shiver down Gu Fan’s spine as he could only nod in response.
At that moment, Su Hui’s phone rang.
The screen displayed ‘Police Station’, the ringtone was set to a very urgent tone, which gave both Su Hui and Gu Fan a bad premonition.
“Receiving a call after work hours, there must be something going on.” Su Hui let out a deep sigh, and quickly composed herself to answer the call.
Gu Fan had no idea what the content of the call was, all he could see was Su Hui’s expression growing more serious and grim.
Finally, he heard her say, “I understand, I’ll head to the scene immediately.”
After hanging up, Su Hui floored the accelerator, and said hastily, “Hold tight, I’m in a hurry.”
“I understand!
I’ll try my best to hold on.” Gu Fan felt his heart racing as he sensed Su Hui’s urgency, the car sped faster and overtook many vehicles on the road.
Seeing the clear case of speeding, Gu Fan cautiously suggested, “Sister Su, I understand your urgency to serve the people, but I’d like to remind you, this is not a police car and people don’t know that you’re a police officer.
If you drive in this manner, there’s a high chance you could cause an accident.”
Su Hui replied calmly, “Thanks for the reminder, just hold on tight and don’t worry about the rest.”
Gu Fan still felt uneasy, and asked, “Are you sure there’s nothing I can do?
Even just a little bit?”
“Yes, there is.
Just don’t distract me from driving and you can silently pray.” Su Hui’s remark startled Gu Fan, the situation didn’t feel promising.
All he could do was close his eyes and pray to the gods for protection.
“Don’t worry, we’re in the city, there’re usually no large vehicles, and the speed limit is enforced.
With my expert driving skills and quick reflexes, even if there’s a collision, it won’t be a big deal.” Su Hui spoke lightly, but Gu Fan sneered, “Are buses considered large vehicles?
No matter how good your driving skills are, if you encounter one driven by an amateur, do you know what drunk driving is?”
Hearing this, Su Hui glanced sideways at Gu Fan, “Kid, what did I just tell you?
If you distract me and cause a traffic accident, before I get the car fixed, I’ll fix you first.”
Immediately, Gu Fan mimicked zipping his mouth shut, signaling utter silence.
Internally, he was still anxious about what kind of case Su Hui was rushing to handle.
Just then, Lin Xi called, leaving Gu Fan indecisive.
If he didn’t answer, Lin Xi would get angry and that wasn’t looking good for him.
But if he did, and distracted Su Hui, he would be in even worse trouble.
Whether he picked up or not, the outcomes were unfavorable.
The invention of the mobile phone really was a double-edged sword, he thought.
After weighing his options, Gu Fan figured it best to consider his girlfriend’s feelings, so he answered the call cheerfully, “What’s up?
We’ve only been apart for a short while, and you’re already calling me.
Do you miss me that much?”
A pleasant voice came from the other end, “You’re so vain, who would miss you?
I’m just checking if you’ve got home safely.”
Hearing this, Gu Fan felt warm inside.
He didn’t expect Lin Xi to be so caring and considerate.
Nonetheless, he was unsure about how to respond.
After thinking it over, he replied, “I’m still on the way, but I’ll be home soon.
You know, the area around my house is always crowded, and my neighbors are good people too.
In a critical situation, I just have to shout for help and they’ll definitely come.”
“Good, then I can rest assured.
Remember to send me a message as soon as you get home.” Lin Xi’s reminder prompted Gu Fan to nod repeatedly, “Okay, okay, I’ll certainly do that.”
After hanging up, Su Hui looked at Gu Fan with a teasing but envious smile, “Good job!
I never thought you’d have a girlfriend who’s not just beautiful and considerate but also really cares for you.”
