The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 383 - 376: Embrace
Chapter 383: Chapter 376: Embrace
The severely wounded had been sent off, with Li Jingang and Yu Shunzhou going to see them off, but Gao Yuan hadn’t gone.
The lightly wounded members of Spark Squad had also been sent off to Abu Hadi Airport, and Gao Yuan hadn’t gone to see them off either.
As the captain, what Gao Yuan needed to do now was what he was supposed to do.
But what should Gao Yuan be doing, actually? He truly didn’t know.
His brothers were injured, some severely, some lightly, but Gao Yuan couldn’t accompany them. Instead, he needed to inspect the battlefield with Nate, check the seized spoils of war, and survey the empty city of Sirte.
Gao Yuan and Nate drove around in the urban area of Sirte City, but Gao Yuan had no idea what the point of it was, since he ultimately wasn’t a real commander of a large force.
Nate’s aide drove the car, Ashraf sat in the passenger seat, and of course, Gao Yuan and Nate took the back seats.
Continually looking at the damaged buildings on both sides, Nate finally said, "Sirte has been completely destroyed, it has lost its significance of being occupied."
What could Gao Yuan say, and what should he say?
After thinking for a while, Gao Yuan nodded and said, "Yes, a city without residents indeed loses its significance, and besides... this city seems quite large. If we were to deploy troops to hold it, too few would be meaningless, but too many would weaken the defense force at Abu Hadi Airport by far, wouldn’t it?"
Gao Yuan tried to use reasoning that anyone could understand. As for persuading Nate to occupy this ghost city and form a strategic angle with Abu Hadi Airport, he would never say such a thing.
Nate nodded and said, "That’s why the Sanitation Workers also didn’t occupy this city. They merely used it as a transit point and forward base, but didn’t truly take it over. Next time, they will still treat it as a forward position and command center. If I had five thousand men, I would consider holding it."
After speaking, Nate murmured a few sentences in a quieter voice, which prompted his aide to make a turn and start heading back.
"Mr. Schumacher, how were the zombies dealt with here?"
Nate waved his hand and said, "After several wars, the city’s population was already low, only about fifty thousand people remained. After the Aliens arrived, the city essentially became a city of the dead. Before the Sanitation Workers arrived, I sent men to clear out this city because it’s too close to Abu Hadi Airport. Not clearing it could have had serious consequences."
"So, are zombies easy to clear out?"
"Easy."
Quantitative changes cause qualitative changes. Cleaning a city with only fifty thousand zombies is a completely different concept compared to one with five hundred thousand.
The car turned back, and they once again arrived at the destroyed artillery position.
The cannons were being loaded onto towing vehicles to be transported away, and when Nate and Gao Yuan got out of the car, five cannons remained waiting to be towed.
Nate adjusted his clothing, then looked at Gao Yuan and asked, "Please tell me, how was this artillery position destroyed?"
Gao Yuan thought for a moment, then pointed at Ashraf and said, "He helped me distract the enemy; I came here and blew up the position with hand grenades."
Nate looked at Gao Yuan with a hint of surprise, then he said gravely, "There were soldiers equivalent to a platoon here."
"Um... I was quite lucky."
Nate still stared at Gao Yuan, speechless, while Gao Yuan spread his hands and said, "It’s just good luck. The enemy’s attention was greatly divided, which allowed me the opportunity to approach this artillery position."
Suddenly, Nate said, "According to what I know, the Sanitation Workers’ troops aren’t that foolish. In fact, their combat power is strong."
"Uh, everyone makes mistakes from time to time, and as you can see, the facts are right in front of us."
To change the subject and satisfy his curiosity, Gao Yuan said with a smile, "I stuffed hand grenades into the cannon barrels, does that completely destroy the cannons? I saw your men taking them away, which means these cannons are still usable, right?"
Nate nodded, "Inspection is needed. The barrel is the core component of the cannon, and the potency of a hand grenade is not enough to destroy the cannon itself, but it can damage the barrel. Until the shrapnel inside the barrel is cleared and assessed, this cannon won’t be able to fire again. However, if cleaned properly and after confirming that the barrel isn’t warped and is still intact and only the rifling is damaged, it can still be used."
Gao Yuan chuckled, "At that time, I had no other weapons, so I had to destroy it this way. However, it’s also good that these cannons can still be used."
At this point, Gao Yuan felt more confident because Nate’s biggest war spoils were those captured by him. Nate had helped rescue his people, and his people had in turn saved Nate’s territory and captured war spoils. From this angle, the help from Gao Yuan’s side was greater.
Nate nodded slightly, "Yes, that’s good. We need more artillery. It doesn’t matter if the accuracy is affected, it will be very useful when providing fire coverage."
After speaking, Nate glanced sideways at Ashraf and then said indifferently, "Old soldier, dressed from Afghan?"
"Yes, his name is Ashraf."
Nate smiled, "If he’s an old soldier from Afghan, that’s not bad."
Without further comment on Ashraf, Nate once again folded his arms behind his back and looked toward the remaining cannons. At that moment, Gao Yuan suddenly remembered something and immediately said, "Right, there is someone in our team whom you might know, Renato. We met him in Afghan, you know him, don’t you?"
Nate paused, "Renato, he’s still alive? He’s here too?"
"Yes, you’ll be able to see him soon."
"Just him by himself?"
After pondering for a moment, Nate nodded but did not say anything more. Gao Yuan carefully said, "I heard he works for you?"
"No, he is just my business partner. He works for Ram and Justin. He’s a decent broker, but..."
Nate shrugged, "I never develop a relationship beyond partnership with any intelligence brokers or middlemen, only Ram thinks that intelligence brokers can also be friends, what a fool!"
Nate appeared quite confident and imposing, but as he spoke, he seemed to lose steam.
In the end, Nate simply shifted his gaze elsewhere. Gao Yuan felt this was a sign of guilt.
Turning to look, Nate noticed a new change and nodded, "Your people are here."
Gao Yuan turned to look and saw a convoy not far away. After a short while, the convoy stopped in front of Gao Yuan and Nate.
Two people got out of the vehicle at the same time and then quickly walked towards Gao Yuan and Nate.
Xinghe had opened his arms wide early on and then hugged Gao Yuan tightly as he arrived in front of him.
Renato also opened his arms, but Nate’s expression changed, and he immediately extended his hand, gesturing to shake hands with Renato.
If they shook hands, there would be no need for a hug, but Renato did not reach out his hand; he directly embraced Nate and said loudly in an exaggerated tone, "Oh, thank God, I’m so happy to see you again. I almost died in that dreadful place in Afghan."
Nate could only lightly embrace Renato back, then pushed Renato away and nodded, "You had a tough time; it’s nice to see you."
