Chapter 366: Chapter 359 Silent Language

If there was one flaw to point out about Ashraf, it would be that his rate of fire was too slow.

Ashraf’s firing rate was definitely limited by his rifle. Gao Yuan and the others had brought many guns, none of which were world-renowned, but all of them were certainly better than Ashraf’s Mosin-Nagant. Moreover, at Kandahar Air Base, Ashraf could pick from world-famous firearms at his leisure.

But these were all moot points because Ashraf would never switch guns.

Now Gao Yuan just wished Ashraf would use a Dragunov sniper rifle instead, with at least ten rounds, and without the need to pull the bolt after every shot.

With a bang, Ashraf killed a man, then he worked the bolt and fired again. By the time he did, those others had managed to run at least ten more meters.

Ashraf fired shot after shot, slowly and methodically, without rushing. By now, Gao Yuan had realized why Ashraf didn’t shoot directly; he wanted to wait for these men to lose their will to resist and start running for their lives before he methodically took them down one by one.

However, Gao Yuan felt that although Ashraf’s firing rate was slow, his accuracy definitely compensated for it.

Ashraf was less than two hundred meters away from his nearest enemy, which was quite close. His optimal firing range was within four hundred meters, preferably under three hundred and fifty meters. And the way things looked now, it seemed unlikely that the enemies could escape in time.

Ashraf fired five shots and hit four people, then he stopped to open the bolt and load the bullets, after which he continued to fire in rapid succession.

The first two shots hit their targets with a single shot each. As for the last enemy, Ashraf fired twice and missed both times because the enemy was too far away, and was running fast at tricky angles. However, just when Gao Yuan thought it might be time to use a grenade, Ashraf switched from a kneeling to a standing position.

Standing should be the least accurate of all shooting stances, but after Ashraf stood up, he used the last bullet in the chamber to hit the fleeing enemy in the back with a single shot.

This marksmanship was beyond reproach.

Such a gem had emerged in Afghan, and then Gao Yuan had recruited him into his team without much effort. The only cost was being hit by his five shots.

It was worth it, extremely so. Gao Yuan felt that his decision to bring Ashraf into the team was nothing short of brilliant.

Alright, now there was no need for words. The most important thing was to clean up the battlefield and urgently find a gun to use.

Regardless of how well grenade throwing went, one could not do without a gun on the battlefield.

Gao Yuan quickly ran over, still intending to choose a machine gun. Of course, he would also check the bodies while he was at it.

Dawn was breaking. Gao Yuan arrived at the first corpse, and an AK74 rifle lay in front of the body. He inspected the muzzle, and the bullet had hit the left lower back; this person should be dead.

But after taking a couple of steps to the side, Gao Yuan hesitated.

Some things are taught to new soldiers through the direct example of veterans. And right now, Gao Yuan remembered a very important rule of battlefield conduct.

That was to finish off with another shot, always. When one wasn’t sure if the enemy was completely dead, one must shoot again.

Of course, a finishing blow with a knife was also an option, but Gao Yuan felt stabbing someone with a knife felt oddly uncomfortable.

So Gao Yuan still picked up that gun and shot at the enemy’s back. But after being hit by two more shots, the enemy remained motionless. Only then did Gao Yuan flip over the body.

Corpses could tell Gao Yuan a lot, something many people, including Li Yang, had taught him.

He didn’t seem like a local, sporting the typical face of a Caucasian, carrying American desert camouflage, but his rifle was Russian-made, and, notably, the body was without a bulletproof vest.

Gao Yuan quickly searched the corpse’s two pockets, which were surprisingly clean, empty of anything.

Pockets utterly empty, was that normal? Absolutely not, because anyone who went into battle would carry some personal items, however, this body had nothing apart from combat-related gear.

Gao Yuan didn’t want to waste too much time on a single corpse, so he quickly ran to the second enemy, gave a coup de grâce, and then searched him.

Still an AK74, still no bulletproof vest, but this corpse had a night-vision device on its head, with an unidentified origin and make, as Gao Yuan’s knowledge wasn’t comprehensive enough. However, the markings on the night-vision device were in English.

Gao Yuan promptly checked all the bodies, of course only conducting a cursory inspection, and then, he could draw a conclusion.

These men were Russians or Eastern Europeans, carrying no personal belongings, but were fairly well-equipped; of the eight men, two had night vision devices, but only basic weapons. From their gear and weaponry, these men were equipped like a typical infantry squad.

Five AK74M rifles, two PKM machine guns, and a SVD Dragunov sniper rifle, or precision shooting rifle -- indeed a standard loadout for a Russian infantry squad.

Unquestionably, these men must have belonged to the Sanitation Worker, but to have a formal Russian infantry squad setup within the Sanitation Worker, and certainly not just one, was quite intriguing.

Ashraf came over at this point; of course, he had seen what Gao Yuan was doing, so after he reached Gao Yuan, he nodded, then spat to one side, muttering under his breath.

"Russkies..."

Ashraf too uttered ’Russkies,’ indicating his judgement matched Gao Yuan’s, who could understand the term because Ashraf often mentioned it. Even with a language barrier, a word frequently used becomes understandable.

Gao Yuan held up the SVD rifle he was carrying towards Ashraf, but Ashraf shook his head, however, he squatted beside the corpse that had been holding the SVD rifle and took out the several dozen bullets it carried.

The SVD used a type of ammo called 7N1, a high-precision sniper bullet designed for sniper rifles, derived from the 7.62×54 R cartridge. This meant Ashraf’s rifle could also use them, though the ballistics differed.

But Ashraf seemed completely at ease with the bullets, and Gao Yuan trusted that he was very familiar with the ammo, and, surely, the ballistics of the two types of bullets as well.

Actually, the ammo used by the PKM machine gun is the same 7.62×54 R cartridge as the Mosin-Nagant, but machine gun bullets are linked in a belt, and taking them off the belt by hand takes some effort, so Ashraf didn’t bother with them.

Now the difficult problem facing Gao Yuan had been resolved, but his communication with Li Yang was also disrupted. So, what should he do next, what could he do to relieve Li Yang and his team?

The battle was still raging, and Gao Yuan felt that if he didn’t do something soon, Li Yang and his team might not last much longer.

Gao Yuan looked towards Ashraf, pointed at the building where Li Yang and his team were trapped, and then spread his hands in a gesture of helplessness.

After pondering for a moment, Ashraf first shook his head at the building Li Yang and his team were in, then he drew a semi-circle with his hand and made a booming sound with his mouth.

Gao Yuan was somewhat confused, as he couldn’t understand what Ashraf meant.
