Chapter 323: Facing The Fear

The tension could even be felt in the air as the empire’s forces were mobilized one after another.

Spade stood at the entrance of the palace, and the royal guards stood not far away from him. Like everyone else, he was wearing a combat suit and not his usual royal robe.

He silently stood at the entrance as he gradually swept his eyes around before turning around and looking at the palace behind him. Moments later, his vision seemed to overlap with the scenes of the past.

The palace, which was engulfed by the fire, the corpses piled up in the hallways and on the ground...

Before, the final battlefield was at this place. His empire collapsed at that point, and he... also self-destructed with it.

Hatred, despair, and madness... They all enveloped the whole world, and Spade was at the forefront of them.

Now...

Spade blinked as the image of the past faded away, and a new and beautiful image emerged.

Arren...

The omega was smiling as he walked towards him. Spade couldn’t even react for a moment. He recalled the past, and he always questioned himself, if Arren was real or just the product of his delusion.

They said an emperor didn’t need any flaws. However, Arren was a weakness that Spade had no remorse to have.

"Spade," Arren smiled as he stood in front of Spade, immediately grabbing the alpha’s hand.

Spade blinked once and twice, until he breathed and tightened the hold of their hands. Looking into Arren’s eyes, he confirmed.

It was real.

The Old Order’s headquarters were in the country west of the empire. Somehow connected to the borders of a kingdom affiliated with the empire.

It was not a very secluded place, and yet its attribute of being so close to the empire was both its advantage and disadvantage. At least before, no one could tell that their headquarters were so close to the empire.

A barricade had been lifted, entry was prohibited, and the exchange of gunfire and explosives had already started since yesterday. They thoroughly surrounded the organization.

And yet... Everyone knew it would not be an easy victory.

"Your Majesty,"

Spade lifted his hand and stopped them. "There’s no need for ceremony. How’s the situation?" Leading Arren inside the tent, the officials only glanced at him before averting their gazes.

The official at the front then reported to Spade. Arren remained silent at his side while Spade nodded his head, not interrupting them, but he looked at the map on the monitor.

The defense line of the organization was getting smaller from their empire’s offensive. It looked like they wouldn’t be able to hold in for much longer; however, that was not the case.

As their defense line became smaller, the forces were also concentrated in this place, and the battle would be prolonged for an unknown amount of time.

Spade was aware of the organization’s capability and power to fight to the death.

"Continue the assault on the front lines," Spade ordered.

However, even if the organization planned and could prolong this battle, Spade had no intention to let them.

He continued, which made the official before him so shocked that he couldn’t close his mouth after.

"Here..." Pointing at a place, "We’ll take over from here."

"Y-Your Majesty..." he exclaimed after recovering. He wanted to persuade Spade, but he was stopped before he could do so.

Spade looked down at him and wrapped his arms around Arren. As he did so, he looked into the official’s eyes commandingly.

"You only need to do what you’re ordered to do."

Despite their confusion, no one could voice their opinions after that.

Arren pulled Spade’s hem, and the alpha leaned to him and asked, "What is it?"

"You’re so cool," Arren also whispered in his ear.

And so, despite the tension, the officials saw their emperor smile in front of his lover. Everyone then tacitly pretended they didn’t see anything.

Arren was actually nervous since they arrived in this place. He had never left Spade’s side, and he wanted to hold him all the time.

Though he had never been here in the past, Arren could feel the oppressive and dangerous aura this place emitted. Somehow, he felt so suffocated just by glancing at the intense battlefield outside.

And one presence felt like a boulder weighing on his chest every time he thought that he was also here. Arren knew it was his trauma finally acting up.

The root of it was also here.

"Leave first," Spade commanded once more, and the officials left.

At last, it was only the two of them on the left. Still, it wasn’t that it became quiet or peaceful since the sound from the battlefield could still be heard inside. However, Arren could finally act however he pleased without Spade’s subordinates in front of them.

"How do you feel?" Spade caged Arren in his arms as he looked down and whispered.

Arren also looked up and circled his arms around the alpha’s neck. Their eyes met as they stared at each other for a moment.

He licked his lips and noticed how Spade subconsciously lowered his gaze and glanced at it before returning his gaze.

Arren laughed and answered honestly. "It’s terrible." He sounded calm, though, contrary to what he said.

He felt Spade’s hands around him tighten.

"But... I can hold on," Arren assured his alpha. "I hate the feeling of being weak. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that either. Still, I just hate it."

Arren grumbled; he didn’t even know if what he was saying made any sense at all. However, the alpha listened to him earnestly.

"I’m... scared." Arren didn’t want to lie. His hands also shook, but he smiled. He thought he was really crazy with all his contradictory actions today.

What could he do? He was scared, terrified even. The thought of seeing that person again, awakened all of his fear, which he didn’t even know existed in him until recently.

And yet, his mind was strangely calm, unlike what he thought. His body didn’t respond like his mind, though. Arren had no clue, or was it only the calm before the storm? He was a bit conflicted about this.

"Then..." Spade’s lips were covered by Arren’s right hand, and he shook his head.

"I’ll face my fear." Arren bravely swore, "I’ll defeat this fear, with you."

Both of them had fears to various degrees. Arren wasn’t the only one with trauma; Spade also had it himself.

He tiptoed and kissed Spade’s cheek as he grinned.

"If I collapse, you will catch me, right?"

Arren knew he was ready for this, and it was unlikely to happen. However, he also didn’t care if that happened. With his alpha with him... Arren was confident in everything.

Spade caressed his cheek and leaned forward until their foreheads touched. He didn’t answer with his words, but this was more than enough of an answer.
