Chapter 344: 344

"My legs are completely numb; how much longer do we have to wait?"

Chuanzi patted his shoulder, "Just a bit longer, wait a bit."

The snow kept falling. A glint of light flashed around the corner of the street as someone entered the alley. Zheng Ergou’s heart tightened. The light stopped in front of a door; the gate was opened from the inside, probably by someone returning home late. A burst of noise followed, then silence once more. Seeing this, Zheng Ergou finally let down his guard toward Chuanzi, thinking the man did have some skills. He’s truly a disciple of the Thief King.

Now, Chuanzi was beginning to regret taking on this job. At the start, he was merely blinded by Zheng Ergou’s one hundred thousand, not contemplating the disaster lurking behind this affair. First and foremost was the accuracy of the information—Zheng Ergou’s words were all "I believe the money’s definitely hidden there," "ninety percent sure," "highly probable," phrases seeming confident but actually utterly unreliable. This was a cardinal sin for carrying out a job. Next, he had underestimated the opponent—none other than Zheng Dazhi, a prominent figure in both legal and illegal circles, not necessarily as famous as a worldly society elder, but definitely not someone simple. After pulling off this heist, it would be impossible for him to remain here. Lastly, there’s Zheng Ergou himself, dumb as a pig, and to make matters worse, completely insubordinate. It’s not the tiger-like opponents to be feared but pig-like teammates.

Neither timing, geographical, nor human conditions were in their favor.

"Chuan, it’s past twenty past twelve, shouldn’t it be about time? Once we get the money, we won’t have to freeze our asses off here!"

The thought of money reignited Chuanzi’s resolve, "Let’s do this!"

Hearing this, Zheng Ergou perked up, shaking off the snow and started to get moving.

Following Chuanzi’s orders, the glass shards on top of the wall needed to be knocked off with a hammer, but that would make too much noise, so they had to make do with gloves on their hands.

"Are there any dogs in the yard?"

"There used to be. Later, Ye Tian took one away. The mutt from your yard."

"Coward. Doesn’t even bark at people."

Chuanzi muttered to himself, stretching the strap of his leather bag and slinging it on his back. It contained all the tools of the trade, many of which he had picked up from Duan Liu—all quality goods.

"Be careful not to let the glass cut your clothes, leaving behind cotton or anything like that is also trouble."

"Got it."

Scaling a wall was a piece of cake for the two of them. Chuanzi went over first since he had experience in such matters. Zheng Ergou moved more slowly, afraid of getting his clothes slashed by the glass.

There were two rooms in the back yard and an additional shed that was constructed later. The rooms were on the east and west, with the shed to the north. According to Zheng Ergou, Zheng Dazhi resided in the eastern room and the goods were hidden in the western one.

The yard was pitch-black. Trusting his instincts, Chuanzi began to swiftly lay out his plans.

The two crouched behind the shed, with Zheng Ergou keeping watch, while Chuanzi started to pull out various pieces of equipment from his bag, which looked quite ostentatious, even though the only useful tool might just be a single key.

"What’s the plan?"

"Brother Gou, just keep watch for me... Never mind, it’s not good to keep watch right outside the door, you be careful yourself."

Chuanzi was about to leave but was grabbed by Zheng Ergou, whose eyes bulged and gripped Chuanzi’s arm harder, "What do you mean? I squat here while you take the money?"

Chuanzi was completely fed up with this guy!

"Brother Gou, the house is just that big, no one knows what anti-burglary measures are inside, it’s safer with one person, I’ll hand the stuff out to you through the window once I get it, how about that?"

"No way. We have to go in together!" Zheng Ergou’s eyes flashed fiercely, "We are both grasshoppers on the same rope, no one can escape! Together, move it!"

Zheng Ergou knew the dangers Chuanzi mentioned, but he was more wary of the reputation of being the Thief King’s disciple, who knows if this kid would pull some tricks, people from the criminal world always have the deepest schemes, if he doesn’t follow closely, who knows what tricks he might play. With that thought, Zheng Ergou was even more convinced in his idea and was increasingly certain that Chuanzi was trying to cheat him.

Endless thoughts went through Chuanzi’s mind, being the Thief King’s disciple certainly meant having some extraordinary skills. Duan Liu had once explicitly said that Chuanzi was not cut out to be a thief, his eyes lacked spirit and had more of a devilishness, the kind of devilishness associated with crooked ways, not suitable for thievery but more for banditry, if it weren’t for the respect towards Chuan’s grandfather, Duan Liu would have certainly kicked him out of the door.

Chuan wasn’t planning on much originally, both Zheng Dazhi and Zheng Ergou were not ones he could afford to provoke, taking the money and running away was the right thing to do, but now he had changed his mind, after all, this was the last job, and with a full five million, it was enough to live lavishly for a few years. Compared to that, ten thousand yuan was nothing, this Zheng Ergou really took him for a beggar.

"Hehe, Brother Gou, it’s fine if you want to go in, but be very careful, in case your brother installed some high-tech alarms or some underground traps, something like a thousand arrows piercing the heart, don’t blame me."

"Quit your yapping, let’s go!"

What Zheng Ergou failed to notice was that the fierce look in Chuanzi’s eyes was even stronger than his own.

The snow in the sky became heavier, where once the individual snowflakes could be seen, now they had joined into patches of goose feathers, blending the entire world together behind this curtain of snow. Within this snow curtain, those two faint figures were almost negligible.

Chuan was the first to reach the door, feeling it, it was a metal door. The lock was one of those embedded in the door, this didn’t pose a challenge to him, he already knew the principle of the lock tumbler when he was seven, the same principle applies no matter the lock, even the ones on safes. Chuan took out the key mold hidden in his chest and inserted it into the keyhole. This mold was taped to his body for warmth, in the cold winter, metal became as brittle as biscuits, and even more so for these tin-made molds.

Zheng Ergou leaned against the wall, carefully watching the door across from him, Zheng Dazhi’s room, with a door, two windows, like two gaping, bloody maws. The more Ergou looked, the more panicked he became, in this pitch-dark weather, why could he distinctly see that door and those two windows?

There was a "click," a feeble sound that could almost be ignored. Zheng Ergou jumped with fright, the snow from his fur hat fluttering down, blinding his eyes.

"Brother Gou, the door’s open."

"Ah? Oh."

Both of their voices were very low and hoarse, barely audible.

"Chuanzi?"

Chuanzi packed up the key and wiped the surroundings of the keyhole with his sleeve, erasing traces was always the highest priority, "What’s up Brother Gou?"
