Summoned with an SSS-Rank Portal Skill-Chapter 255: First Clue, and First Problem
No one wanted to be in the sewers. William was the first to go down. Right after, Rena and Burt followed.
It smelled bad down there… The awful smell was the first thing that got to them, followed by the ugly looks of that place.
When Burt looked down, he saw the water with a darker color. "This is like the water of death."
Although they disliked the place, it was not like they hadn't gone to somewhere similar before. They were adventurers who had to endure and fight against many things, so a sewer wasn't enough to stop them.
Their task was pretty straightforward.
"What do you think is down here?" Burt asked.
The city's security chief had reported that people had seen strange silhouettes at night. What kind of creatures could they be?
William had no idea. The first idea that came to his mind were the shape-shifters they had seen not long ago, but according to the chief, the shape-shifters only stayed inside that specific forest.
So, it had to be something else.
"No idea, I just hope we can be done with this quickly and get the hell out of here."
Rena and Burt nodded. Everyone shared the same feeling.
First, though, before looking for any monsters, they searched for clues about the missing person. Someone went to the sewers to check it—just like they were doing—and ended up vanishing. It happened two days ago, so if there was a chance to find the missing person, well, that was the time.
"How about we start by looking for any clues that might indicate where the person who came down into the sewers went?" William suggested.
He wanted to take advantage of the fact that the person had recently been in the sewers. This was the best time to look for any trace.
If they delayed too long, any potential clues would certainly disappear. Rena and Burt thought the same way.
Rena even offered another idea. "Do you think it's worth us splitting up?"
On one hand, separating would ensure they could cover a larger area of the sewers, but at the same time, it would also mean they would be more exposed.
That place wasn't safe, meaning walking alone could allow some creature to take advantage of the moment to attack one of them. That would be far from good.
However, they decided to split up. Everyone there was strong, so they could manage on their own.
"Let's separate and look for anything strange," William said, "if you see anything, let me know."
William wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page. This was crucial in a situation where they would certainly encounter dangerous things trying to kill them.
Apparently, it seemed everyone was indeed on the same page. Rena took one path, and Burt took another.
Of course, William also chose a path. These sewers seemed more like a labyrinth. There were paths to the left and right, twisting and branching off.
The city's security chief had no idea what it was like down there. He wanted them to go into these sewers and look for the missing person, but he himself had no clue about the place, and that meant William also had no idea what it was like.
He was going down there to explore and discover things on his own. This was dangerous. The person who went down there had to be quite strong and courageous to do such a thing.
Anyway, William walked slowly along the stone part, trying as much as possible to avoid the dirty sewer water.
His steps were slow and calculated. He was always looking down to make sure he wouldn't step in the wrong place.
His enhanced dark vision made a big difference in this situation. While Rena had to use her magic to illuminate the place, he didn't need any of that.
At first, he didn't find anything different. The place was exactly like a normal sewer, but eventually, he found something. He saw a piece of cloth that looked like a torn piece of someone's shirt sleeve.
"Whose could this be?" he thought.
As far as he knew, practically no one went down there, meaning that piece of shirt had to belong to the man who had recently gone down.
He bent down and picked up the piece of cloth he had found. Judging by its appearance and texture, it really seemed to be part of the clothing of someone who had been down there.
William had no idea what kind of clothes the man had been wearing, but it looked very much like the same type of clothing that other people living in the city wore.
This was a good sign. Well, on the one hand, it was good because he had found some clue that showed where the man who had gone down there was. But on the other hand, a piece of shirt lying there wasn't such a good thing.
Had he been attacked? Had he been badly injured?
William looked around and didn't find any traces of blood. Maybe the blood had already dried, or maybe the creature that had attacked the man had consumed the blood.
Either way, he knew he was heading in the right direction. Before moving forward, William turned back and went to look for his friends. He wanted to let them know that he had found something before they separated too far.
The clue he had found seemed very likely to be the right one, so Rena and Burt didn't need to continue searching.
He went back the same way he had come and it didn't take long to find Rena, who was illuminating the place with her magic and trying to find any clues.
"What happened?" she asked, looking a little surprised and startled to see William there.
"I found a piece of clothing," he said, "I'm almost certain it belongs to the person who came to explore the sewers recently. I think it's best if we stick together and head in that direction."
"Let's look for Burt then," she said.
Now what they needed to do was find Burt and let him know about the plan they had in mind. They went in the same direction that Burt had gone before, and they hoped to find him quickly. After all, he hadn't gone that far.
However, they didn't see any sign of him. They walked for a good while, and still, Burt was nowhere to be found.
What was even stranger was precisely the path Burt had taken to explore. It was a straight path! There were no other places he could have gone during that time. He could only go straight in that situation!
"Could he have been attacked too?" William said as he punched the wall, "it has to be that. There's no way he could have gotten lost just going straight."
Rena also felt that something had happened to Burt. It was a bad feeling that was present in her body.
"So what do we do now?" she said, "we can't keep looking for the missing person with Burt gone. We have to find him first."
They had only been in the sewers for one hour, and things were already looking bad...
