Spy-x-War Showdown-Chapter 62 - 61 The Telephone
62: Chapter 61: The Telephone
62 -61: The Telephone
The real test came the next day.
Yang Yi had never stayed in a cell before, so even though he was exhausted, he couldn’t sleep well on his first night in prison, tossing and turning until the early hours, and even then his sleep was fraught with restlessness.
Having slept poorly, he woke up the next day feeling groggy, which made him feel extremely uneasy.
He took out a toothbrush from his toiletry bag that was only half the length of a finger, inspected it for a long time, and then began to brush his teeth. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
But after brushing, he stared at the diminutive toothbrush for a very long time while standing in front of the sink.
“Are you done?
If you’ve finished washing up, could you please move aside?”
Yang Yi put away his toothbrush, turned to look at Chris, and whispered apologetically, “Sorry, just got lost in thought for a moment.”
In the movies he had seen, toothbrushes could always be sharpened into deadly weapons, but in reality that wasn’t feasible, because the toothbrush was too small.
He still needed to find a way to acquire a weapon; relying on bare fists was far too ineffective, and trying to gouge someone’s eyes out with his fingers wouldn’t succeed every time.
However, Yang Yi had no good ideas at the moment.
Chris quickly finished washing up, then stood by the cell door, having clearly timed it perfectly, because just as he took his position, the bell alerting prisoners to come out rang.
The first order of business was breakfast.
Today’s meal consisted of oatmeal porridge, a small bottle of milk, and two slices of bread, which tasted much better to Yang Yi than the beans he had eaten the day before.
He wasn’t sure if it was because he was famished after a night without food, or if it really was that the food tasted better.
Boxing King was still going around collecting food from others, but this morning he was after milk.
Yang Yi still didn’t hand over his food.
The feud was already set, and continued confrontation seemed inevitable, so Yang Yi ate extremely quickly this time.
After finishing his breakfast, Yang Yi chose to sit directly facing Boxing King, and after finishing, he began to watch him.
If Boxing King’s group made any suspicious moves, he would be the first to spot them.
Chris sat at the same table as Yang Yi.
He finished his breakfast quickly and, without looking at Yang Yi, whispered, “I’m off to work, but I want to warn you to be careful today.
If Boxing King plans on retaliating, it will definitely happen today.”
Yang Yi asked in surprise, “You’re going to work?”
“Yes, handling trash.
It’s my turn to work today.
The job isn’t popular, but it’s still better than staying in a cell.”
Yang Yi immediately inquired, “Can I ask about the trash disposal process?
Is it packed and taken away by the garbage truck, or is it disposed of on-site?
If on-site, is it buried or incinerated?”
“Some of it is incinerated, some is taken away, and some is buried.
We don’t have municipal garbage trucks coming here, so we have to deal with most of the trash ourselves.”
After a pause, Chris whispered, “Good luck.”
Chris stood up and said to the guard, “Officer, I’m off to work.
It’s my turn to handle the trash today.”
Only after the guard signaled that Chris could leave did he hurry out of the dining hall.
Breakfast passed peacefully, with Boxing King causing no trouble.
After breakfast, there was an hour for yard time when the prisoners could walk around, stretch their legs, and even work out or play basketball.
The yard wasn’t very large, and the prisoners each occupied their own territory; black inmates took over the basketball court, white inmates occupied the corner with the gym equipment, Hispanic prisoners gathered together for a chat, and those without gangs found a spot in the corners to enjoy the best part of their day.
Yang Yi leaned against the chain-link fence, with an armed guard not too far behind him, thinking it felt safer this way.
But upon seeing Buddy walking through the crowd, Yang Yi immediately called out loudly, “Buddy!
Buddy!
Can you come here for a second?”
Buddy was laughing and chatting with many black inmates, and Yang Yi didn’t dare to get too close.
Getting surrounded by a bunch of black inmates, where someone from Boxing King’s gang could easily stab him, was a distinct possibility.
Buddy quickly came over to Yang Yi, grinned, and asked, “What’s up, man?
Do you need something?”
Yang Yi lowered his voice, “Yes, I heard you have a phone here?”
Buddy perked up and replied quietly, “Yeah, I got a cell phone.
Wanna make a call?
No problem, ten US dollars a minute.”
That was a steep price, Yang Yi grimaced and said, “I don’t have money right now.”
Buddy cocked his head, making a helpless expression, saying, “Are you messing with me?
No money?
No money means no deal, buddy.”
Yang Yi whispered, “But I’m certain I can get the money.
Let me make a call so I can ask for it.
Once I have the money, I’ll be able to pay up.
I’ll even give you an extra fifty dollars, how about that?”
Buddy thought for a moment, then whispered back, “Are you sure you can get the money?”
“Of course, man.
I don’t want to cause myself any trouble.
I wouldn’t promise you if I wasn’t sure.
I can definitely get the money.”
Buddy shrugged, saying, “Follow me.”
Yang Yi followed Buddy through the crowd to a corner.
That place was also in the guards’ line of sight, because there were simply no blind spots in the yard, but Buddy must have been confident he wouldn’t get caught since he dared let Yang Yi make a call from that corner.
In fact, there were phones available within the prison, and everyone could apply to use them.
Good behavior could grant you the privilege of making calls as long as the person on the other end was willing to pay, but there was one problem: those calls would definitely be monitored and recorded.
So, even though there were free phones in prison, Buddy’s cell phone remained highly sought after.
Buddy took out a very small cell phone, only slightly larger than a thumb, which was a knockoff phone made in Huaxia.
Handing over the phone secretively, Buddy whispered, “We’ll use the call timer for billing.
Even if it isn’t a full minute, we’ll round up, and the same applies for each extra second.
Manage your own time.”
Yang Yi took the small phone and then whispered back, “What if it’s an international call?
Is it still ten dollars a minute?”
Buddy was taken aback and then said in surprise, “International call?
No, can’t make international calls with it.”
Yang Yi was dumbfounded and said, “Why?
I can pay more!”
“It’s not about paying more.
It’s just not possible.
It would need to be activated, but this number hasn’t got international calling activated.
Do you understand?”
Yang Yi felt like crying but had no tears.
He could only ask for money from Danny or Kate.
If he couldn’t dial a number in the United Kingdom, how was he meant to make contact, how was he to ask for money.
