Chapter 235: Chapter 235: Mengmeng, it really seems like we are having an affair...
Zhan Lan’s lips twitched—wasn’t that bizarre spring dream of hers just last night? freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
Zhan Lan’s cheeks flushed with color; she rose to her feet, her back to Mu Yan, and took a sip of water, saying, "Impossible, I didn’t have such a dream."
Mu Yan spread his hands and said, "Believe it or not, it’s true, Mengmeng."
Zhan Lan glanced at him, peered outside to see that there was no one around, and then turned her head to say, "Mu Yan, hurry up and leave, lest we be seen by others!"
Mu Yan stood up, putting on his coat and tying his belt, then looked outside from behind her, indeed seeing no one around.
Standing at her side, Mu Yan whispered in her ear, "Mengmeng, the two of us really do seem like we’re having an affair..."
Zhan Lan pushed him out, "Stop talking nonsense, get going!"
Mu Yan left, and just as Huang Gun got up to relieve himself, he caught another glimpse of Mu Yan’s refreshed profile.
Huang Gun clenched his fists against his chest, overflowing with excitement, and whispered to himself, "Mu Yan and Zhan Lan are really an item!"
Having finished her meal, Zhan Lan went to the training grounds and saw the Vermilion Bird. Suddenly recalling Mu Yan’s words, she asked with a probing smile, "Vermilion Bird, I heard you grind your teeth, snore loudly, and even talk in your sleep..."
"Ah..." The Vermilion Bird was baffled by Madam’s question, but then he immediately realized, Master didn’t come back to his tent to sleep last night.
He spoke seriously and earnestly, "Yes, General Zhan, I not only grind my teeth and snore loudly but also talk in my sleep... and sleepwalk too!"
Zhan Lan said sympathetically, "Then don’t give up on treatment!"
Vermilion Bird: "..." In the end, he was left to shoulder all the blame!
After a day of grueling training, Zhan Lan, armed with her battle spear named Wuming, climbed up to the watchtower for the night watch.
Tonight she was supposed to keep watch over the ramparts alongside Huang Gun.
Huang Gun had already reached the bottom of the watchtower, but then something struck him, and he quickly left.
As Zhan Lan ascended the watchtower, she inquired about the soldiers defending the wall, "Where’s Huang Gun?"
Before the soldiers could answer, Mu Yan’s voice emerged behind her, "He couldn’t make it, his stomach is raising havoc, so I’m taking over his watch."
Although Huang Gun was a slippery fellow, he wasn’t likely to have Mu Yan take over his watch!
Unless there was only one possibility—Huang Gun did it on purpose!
He wanted to play matchmaker for her and Mu Yan.
"Well, okay then!" Zhan Lan didn’t want to expose Huang Gun’s little scheme, especially since Mu Yan would be leaving in a couple of days; just the thought of his departure made things seem less interesting.
The two of them kept watch together atop the watchtower. Zhan Lan, in her armor, stood on the city wall, gazing in the direction of Beiyue.
Mu Yan undid his fur coat and draped it over Zhan Lan, who in turn undid hers and wrapped it around him, "No need, I’m not cold."
They sat behind the battlements until the hour of zi (midnight), when Mu Yan, looking at her tired eyes, said, "You go inside and rest for a bit; I’ll stand watch."
Swoosh!
An arrow sliced through the silent night.
Zhan Lan suddenly spotted a flash of cold light.
Several crossbow bolts were fired towards Mu Yan.
Sensing the attack, Mu Yan grabbed Zhan Lan’s arm, swiftly turning his body to shield her as they took cover behind the wall.
Zhan Lan blew the whistle and shouted, "To arms!"
The soldiers on the city wall readied bows and arrows as shadows climbed the walls and clashed with the soldiers; Zhan Lan joined the melee with her combat spear in hand.
Mu Yan, with a sword in hand, cut down the ambushers.
The attackers, all masked and clad in black, were ruthless and decisive in their movements.
The men in black quickly encircled Mu Yan, and by the time Vermilion Bird and others arrived, Mu Yan had already slain nearly all of them and was locked in combat with a man wearing a silver mask, whose strength matched his own.
"Go help her!"
Mu Yan looked towards Zhan Lan with worry, as a dozen people surrounded her completely.
"Yes!" Vermilion Bird led the Hidden Guards in a full-on attack while Zhan Lan’s Hidden Guards saw her gesture and also attacked the people in black from the darkness.
Zhan Lan’s combat spear swirled and plunged straight into the enemy’s chest, then she turned and pierced another enemy’s neck.
Shortly after, Zhan Lan looked in Mu Yan’s direction. Mu Yan was still fighting with the masked man.
The clashing of weapons erupted with sparks in the night, exploding in the dark.
Zhan Lan took out her crossbow and aimed at the masked man.
Mu Yan was fighting so intensely that Zhan Lan could not find a chance to shoot her crossbow.
Finally, she joined the fight.
After they teamed up, the masked man was shaken by Zhan Lan’s combat spear, rendering his arm numb.
His eagle-like eyes looked at Zhan Lan and Mu Yan as he leaped up and slid down the castle wall along a rope.
As he fell, Zhan Lan’s hidden weapon shot out from the dagger in her hand, and by the time he landed on the ground, one of his arms went numb instantly.
Zhan Lan picked up her crossbow and shot at the man, hitting him squarely in the back.
"Chase!" Mu Yan ordered the Hidden Guards.
"Yes!"
Mu Yan kicked the man in black helping the masked man flee to the wall, and as he fell heavily, clutching his chest, she stepped on him.
Zhan Lan asked coldly, "Speak, who sent you?"
The man in black looked up at Mu Yan and Zhan Lan, smirked, and then prepared to bite down on the poison pill hidden in his mouth.
Mu Yan quickly pried open his jaw, pressed his head, and a black pellet fell out.
Zhan Lan looked at the panic-stricken man in black and said coldly, "Answer my question. If you lie, I will break one of your arms first."
The man in black, pressed against the wall by soldiers, avoided Zhan Lan and Mu Yan’s gazes and said nothing.
"Break!" After Zhan Lan spoke, a soldier cut down and the man in black wailed as he watched his bloody arm fall to the ground, then finally changed his expression and begged for mercy, "Let go of me, I’ll talk!"
Zhan Lan did not give the order to release him, nor did the soldiers dare to loose their grip. Zhan Lan looked at him again.
"Stop playing tricks. Are you from Beiyue?"
The man still did not speak, and Zhan Lan spoke again, "Cut off his ears!"
The man in black saw the beautiful yet ruthless female general. Her heart was so cold that she did not even blink when torturing him.
The man seemed to make up his mind and said, "I’ll tell you, I am..."
While speaking, he headbutted the soldier beside him, knocking him down, then jumped over the castle wall.
"I’m sorry, General Zhan!"
The dazed guard stumbled up from the ground. Zhan Lan leaned out to look down from the castle wall, only to see the man had fallen to his death below.
Zhan Lan gazed at his corpse for a long while. Around his body were the corpses of several dozen men in black, and there were also bodies lying in pools of blood on the castle wall. Such was the cruelty of war. If her heart was not hard, she might have been the one to die.
Mu Yan put her hands on Zhan Lan’s shoulders, checking her body up and down, asking with concern, "Are you hurt?"
Zhan Lan shook her head and looked at Mu Yan, "That man was very strong, did he hurt you?"
Mu Yan’s lips curved slightly, "No, but when I was sparring with him just now, I felt that his swordsmanship seemed to come from Shadow Sect!"
Swordsmen from the Shadow Sect do not belong to any country. They serve various imperial families.
Zhan Lan suddenly thought of the way the masked man looked at her, the way an eagle eyes its prey, which resurfaced in her mind.
She murmured, "I think I know who he is!"
