Tilo woke early, excited. Today was the day.

For weeks, he had watched the slimes in the nearby swamp. They bounced and wobbled, making funny noises. Sometimes they split into smaller pieces and rejoined. To Tilo, they looked like strange little blobs of fun.

But slimes were monsters, too. Dangerous if angry. The village hunters always warned kids to stay away.

Tilo swung a stick he'd sharpened.
