Perfect Avatar-Chapter 242: Not What It Seems
Chapter 242: Not What It Seems
"A day for light, a day for fools, a day for monsters, and a day for history. Today is the greatest day, so let’s sing for today! Let’s cry for today!"
The giant tree lit up, freeing every individual from the elf kingdom.
The group entered the sacred ground, expecting a fierce greeting, so the sight of each elf dancing and singing was quite unsettling.
"...See them fighting in the fire,
without tears
Strike thee land, curse yer voice in the burning light of our soul, decaying
In the name of the crimson tears of our bodies..."
"What is this? Is this a party where elves are acting crazy?" Giudecca groaned.
Nefertari glanced at her people and then at the vast temple.
"We are born with a tremendous will to live, so great that it has become our curse. It’s just our way of showing gratitude to the God who relishes our suffering."
"...Scary." Lucca began to tremble.
Rhea looked around, strangely, each elf unaware of the presence of a large army, but as her gaze fixed on the ground, her face was decorated with a frown.
"This place...Freya, with your new power, what do you think of this place?"
Beside her, Freya also observed the surroundings, the greenish sky, the giant tree, then the ground with a few roots crossing it.
"It’s... I feel a little uncomfortable. I feel like... this place is... a living thing."
Everyone flinched and looked at the ground and above. Lucca lifted one foot, then another
"Living? You mean the city is very lively? Or..."
"No, she means this place is the inside of a living being." Rhea stepped forward. "I have a rough idea of what’s going on, but before that..."
She stopped and turned to everyone.
"Do you have any idea what we’re doing here?"
Eryl nodded, she looked at Nefertari and the other elves who followed her.
"Is it maybe... you’re planning to kill Envy?"
The elves’ eyes widened. Freya looked at Eryl in confusion, but immediately understood the situation. They were going to put an end to the twilight of the Gods, after having put an end to Cleopatra.
"Wait, no! Rhea, that’s not what we agreed to do! We have nothing to do with Queen Cleopatra, even though her people killed our king! We just want to end all this suffering!"
Rhea pushed a small sight and gestured with her head to signal her army to move.
"I expected you to show more confidence with those eyes, I guess I overestimated you again? My only goal here is to see if Queen Cleopatra is willing to join our cause in the extermination of Players. We, as Sin Avatars, are bound by the Code, and I will ensure that we respect it."
She turned towards the entrance and headed inside the temple. Rhea Silva never lies, so a deep sense of relief washed over Freya and her people.
They all followed the general and walked for a few moments in the corridors, passed the stairs and soon arrived at the last door.
In all this time, they never encountered an elf, every single one of them was seemingly outside, singing and dancing.
Nefertari was the first to touch the door, she pushed it open slowly, the light of the room slowly emerging, illuminating every face, and finally, revealing the most beautiful woman in the world, singing in a shallow voice in front of a statue.
She stopped singing once the doors were fully open, and then, with a smile on her lips, she turned to her visitors.
"My... you should have warned me that you were bringing new people, I would have prepared a welcoming committee."
Her smile widened, it was a natural smile that she was good at, but that was what made it more disturbing.
Freya tilted her head, her eyes staring into the Queen’s green.
"Sorry for the inconvenience, my Queen. We have met someone special in our way. We..."
"Oh, so you’re the former leader?"
Cleopatra interrupted her abruptly.
"What?"
"I mean, your appearance... you suddenly seem more... interesting. To make you that way, I guess this person could be very... special?"
Cleopatra’s smile widened, she seemed to see right through Freya.
The young woman gritted her teeth, perhaps it was due to her new power, but all the fear that Cleopatra aroused in her gradually transformed into deep annoyance and deep unease.
"Yes, she is, but she seem-"
"I’ll take it from here." Rhea stepped forward.
Freya froze in place, she was taken aback by this sudden gesture, but a shadow to her left alarmed her of the seriousness of the situation. Lucca and Giudecca walked to the sides, silent as ghosts.
Freya began to tremble, reaching out to Rhea. freёnovelkiss.com
"Rhea...please...PLEASE! You gave me your word!"
"And I kept my word, young lady."
Behind, the black knights took out their weapons, the little group from Ambrosia realized the horror that was about to unfold but there was no way out now. The only exit was behind the knights, and Freya wasn’t ready to leave.
"Rhea, why?! Why?! I thought the General never lies!"
"And I repeat, I’ve kept my word."
She unsheated her sword, Freya was about to rush on her when Eryl grabbed her arm.
"Eryl! PLEASE, not you too! We can’t let them do that, we have already got what we need! Please!"
She turned to the General once more, her eyes filling with despair.
"The world is being ravaged by Players, people are being killed! Any of you could stop it if you tried! Why is this so hard to understand? Why are you using your power on yourself instead of making a thing for the world? Please Rhea, anyone, stop this madness!"
Her voice echoed in the room, drawing everyone’s gaze. Her eyes filled with tears and her heart with great despair.
Eryl held her from behind by the shoulders, her own eyes showing regret. Nefertari, Marie, Liliana, Hope, and even Cid were speechless at her distress.
No one could deny it, despite the jealousy, frustration, and resentment, no one could deny that she was 100% right.
But she was also powerless against the one who decided to turn this moment into an execution.
"For the last time, Freya, I have kept my word. I will not lay my hands on Queen Cleopatra."
A tear fell from Freya’s right eye, her gaze turning more and more furiously towards Rhea.
"I don’t care if it’s you or one of your soldiers. Don’t touch her!"
Rhea pointed her sword at Cleopatra, the light reflected on the blade illuminated the face of the Queen whose eyes glowed green.
"If you could learn how to use your eyes instead of your heart, you would get it. I promised not to touch Queen Cleopatra, so, if the target isn’t Cleopatra, aren’t I allowed to attack?"
