Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 190 Checkmate
Senator Fena and Fargus slipped away from the ongoing scuffle between their own agents and the robotic doppelgangers that had taken the place of the witnesses and court staff that should have been present.
From the way the fight was going, it looked like their side was going to win, since the robots lacked any sort of weapons and were not built particularly sturdily.
Still, this would not get them out of the predicament that they found themselves in.
As things should have gone, the witnesses, the prosecutor, and the judge were supposed to be dead by this point.
That would see the case against Senator Fena and the other high-ranking individuals working with the Odium Syndicate fall apart.
No longer was that the case, however.
They had not managed to eliminate anyone, and after the current commotion was brought to an end, the proceedings would begin anew.
Senator Fena had already expended a vast amount of resources and exerted her influence to the fullest to pull off the attack on the courthouse today. It had not been easy by any means, and next time it would be even more difficult.
For every plan that was thwarted, the only option became to escalate things. But there was a finite number of times that they could do so.
Eventually the Odium Syndicate was going to cut its losses and abandon Senator Fena and their other collaborators in the Cocarro System.
It would set them back and mean losing a great deal of influence they had within this section of the Alliance, but at the end of it all, everything came down to cost versus reward.
If it required a full-blown war with the Alliance to keep the Senator and the others in power, then it simply would not be worth the effort. The Odium Syndicate had earned a great deal of money through their illicit deals and built up a decent army of enforcers, yet their power still paled in comparison to Azade, let alone the entire Dramid Alliance.
"It might be time that we left Azade ourselves. Clearly, we've been outmaneuvered here, and I don't know if another opportunity will present itself for us to eliminate our foes. As things stand, the trial will continue another day, we will be found guilty and be stripped of our authority, and then live out the rest of our days as prisoners." Fargus said, highlighting the bleak future that awaited them.
Senator Fena's initial thoughts were to lash out. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
She had instructed Fargus with concocting this plan, and its failure could be considered his fault.
Nevertheless, she bit down on her tongue and kept her emotions in check.
Throwing her frustrations at her closest confidant would not get her anywhere and it was not until the very end that everything had fallen apart.
Either as an abundance of caution, or because they had caught wind of the attack, someone in power had set up robotic fakes to take the places of key people involved in the case.
'No, they must have known. Otherwise, this would have been too risky.'
Had the trial continued without interruption, the entire affair would have been considered null and void.
The Alliance's own laws would make sure of that. Having robotic witnesses obviously came with a whole host of problems in a legal system that was partially founded on witnesses being unable to lie.
A truth serum was administered so that testimony could never be false. Though depending on the words used in asking questions and the individual's answers, it could be warped to fit a certain narrative without technically telling a lie.
For all of the witnesses to have actually been robotic replacements, that would call the entire trial's legitimacy into question. In the best-case scenario for Senator Fena, it might have been possible to have the entire case against her dismissed.
Except, the attack that was currently ongoing would absolutely muddle things. The Alliance could claim that there were extreme circumstances and say that they had reasonable belief that the lives of the judge, prosecutor, court staff, and witnesses would be at risk.
Even if no connection to today's incident was linked back to Senator Fena, it was only a matter of time before she was convicted as things stood.
That left her with only two real choices, to stay and fight, or run away.
Naturally, she did not want to abandon her position and the wealth and power it had brought her.
Should she escape Azade, then the Cocarro System, and finally the Dramid Alliance, she would avoid imprisonment. But at the same time loose nearly everything she had.
If she ran to the Odium Syndicate, they might even just dispose of her for her failures. Though, she hoped to have at least enough value left to avoid this outcome.
Time seemed to stretch on as Senator Fena considered her options. However, every second was precious and Fargus eventually pushed her for an answer.
"Dolores, we need to act now. I'll continue to follow you, but you need to make a decision."
Senator Fena went wide eyed as Fargus called her by her first name. They did have a close relationship, but she had only given him permission to address her so informally when they shared a bed together.
For him to do so now was a show of how dire the situation was.
"Fine. It's time that we leave. We'll use the chaos to cover our escape. I presume that you've already set things up in case of an emergency."
"Yes, there is a vehicle waiting for us and a fast ship prepared with some of your wardrobe and furniture onboard at a private installation. If we move quickly, we can be out of the system before anyone realizes we've left." Fargus said, flashing a reassuring smile.
The two of them then hurried away from the area and Fargus contacted the other agents hidden throughout the courthouse.
Swiftly and expertly, he ordered them to move positions to best cover the escape route he had designated beforehand.
After that, he sent transmissions to only the most loyal among their operatives. They would join him and Senator Fena as guards and escort them to their escape vehicle.
Knowing that time was limited, both Fargus and Senator Fena began making arrangements as they ran.
From their terminals, they liquidated assets and prepared for untraceable luxury goods to be prepared so that once they left the system, they could still maintain at least a semblance of the lifestyle they enjoyed on Azade.
Had they fled when Fargus had originally urged Senator Fena to, then they would have had more time to do these things, but the past could not be changed. All they could do was try and salvage the situation they were in.
At the very least, their escape seemed to be going smoothly.
Since the main conflicts were occurring away from the escape route, the two of them did not run into any obstacles.
Soon they even had thirteen loyal guards joining them and ready to defend them to the end.
It was painful to have to leave everything that they had built up on this world, but it was necessary to avoid prison. Something neither of them wanted to ever experience. The Dramid Alliance had several different tiers of prisons, and considering that what their crimes were, the two of them were likely to end up in places akin to a living hell.
"Okay, we're almost there. This area is typically only used as a cargo loading bay, but I managed to sneak in a vehicle that we can use to escape." Fargus said as they approached their destination.
He had meticulously planned everything out and considering the number of forces currently being needed to contain the protestors rioting and the agents working for the Odium Syndicate, it was unlikely that there would be anyone left to stop them.
Even if there were a few guards still around, it would be easy enough to force their way through and escape due to the current chaos.
Yet, the instant that they entered the area where the escape vehicle should have been waiting, they found an entire squad of Azade's Defenders of the Peace Stationed there.
At the front of their formation though, there were fifteen individuals who were clearly not part of the organization.
Fargus and Senator Fena recognized them well. This group had been a major thorn in their sides ever since they got involved with Grito.
"Ah, I guess we're in luck that you decided to come this way. I'm glad that we get to pay you back personally for all you put us through." A man in heavy power armor at the front said.
It was easy to tell that the person in the power armor was Avery Asteria, the leader of the mercenary group Grito had joined.
Senator Fena and Fargus wanted nothing more for the man and his cronies to die. And in fact, they thought that three of them already had. Yet, Olivia, Havanna, and Rorson were present. Still alive, well, and fully armed for a confrontation.
