Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 187 A Bit of Subterfuge
Having commandeered the gang's lead vessel, Olivia pushed aside the boss of the thugs attacking them and sat down in the driver's seat.
Immediately she regretted this decision, as the chair was filthy and she could already feel years of grime clinging to her clothes.
Still, she held back her disgusted and fiddled with the controls.
"Looks like we're in luck. This thing doesn't have any complex security procedures to block unregistered users. We've got complete access to all of its functions." Olivia said, a sinister grin on her face.
As expected, the jamming device that was blocking communications was aboard this vehicle. With a single flick of a button Olivia shut it down and then contacted Azade's Defenders of the Peace.
Thanks to her current position as the chancellor's special investigator and the fact that unusual activity had been detected in the area, a squad was dispatched immediately to provide backup and arrest the gang trying to kill them.
"They said that they'll be here in just three minutes. But in the meantime, we've got some cleanup to do."
The other members of the gang were hovering around waiting for word from their boss.
Obviously, they had seen Olivia, Havanna, and Rorson enter the vehicle.
Seeing as how none of them were particularly strong, and their boss was the most powerful person they knew, none of them figured he would lose, but the more time that went by without contact, the more all of them started to fear the worst.
"Oh, looks like we've got a runner." Havanna said as she peeked her head out of one of the open doors.
The leader of these thugs was not a figure that inspired loyalty through his competency and devotion like Avery did. Instead, he held onto his position due to fear and violence. The moment he was beaten, his so-called friends all panicked and started to run away. Abandoning their boss without a second thought.
Of course, this might have been the right move if all they cared about was self-preservation, but tactically it was foolish.
Now that they were no longer putting pressure on Olivia, Havanna, and Rorson, the three were free to attack without worrying about any obstacles.
"Don't let a single one get away. We need to contain the information of what happened here if we can." Olivia ordered.
She did not want the enemy that had sent these thugs after them gaining anything from this. If they did not hear anything back from the gang they hired, it would make them antsy and more likely to slip up. And while she did not know if it was possible yet, Olivia was formulating a plan to trick their unseen adversary.
Havanna gleefully unloaded on the fleeing gang members.
This had certainly been a difficult situation, and she especially had not enjoyed having to jump from a moving vehicle and being carried like a piece of luggage by Rorson.
With every blast from her gun, she shot down another vehicle, and the smile on her face grew as she watched them crashing into the ground.
Rorson was also doing his part, though he was not enjoying it nearly as much as Havanna.
His mechanical right arm had changed forms once again, and a single long barrel extended out of it.
It did not pack as much of a punch as Havanna's customized laser rifle, but it still did the trick of bringing down the thugs' vehicles.
Soon most of them had crashed into the fields below, and the few that were about to get away ended up being intercepted by the Keepers of the Peace that quickly arrived.
At this point, the remaining gang members realized that they were well and truly beaten and surrendered.
The Keepers of the Peace quickly went to work rounding up all of the thugs, and their leader, along with two of his subordinates, came to greet Olivia and make sure that she was alright.
"I'm glad to see that you are unharmed special investigator. Truly, it was a surprise to hear that you were being attacked. I must apologize for how lacking we are to let something like this happen."
The leader of the squad, Constable Contin Lilman, bowed his head to Olivia. He felt it was a failure on his part that such an incident had gone unnoticed for so long under his watch.
It was normally unthinkable for armed thugs to just ambush someone and try to kill them in broad daylight. Azade typically had excellent security, but in recent days, they had been tested over and over again.
"Still, I must say that I'm impressed. To think that just three people could do this." Constable Lilman said, gazing at the downed vehicles.
"Well, I wasn't given the position of special investigator just for my looks." Olivia said jokingly. "And my two companions here are quite competent in a fight."
After a bit of small talk, the Constable took Olivia's, Havanna's, and Rorson's statements on what had happened.
Seeing as how they were currently working directly for Azade's chancellor, he was absolutely courteous and did not once question their stories.
Normally he would have been a bit more skeptical considering what had occurred, but he could not afford to upset Olivia, and by extension, the chancellor herself.
"Okay, I've recorded all of your statements. Now, I'll take you back to my station and finish arrangements on this matter and prepare a new vehicle for you."
Constable Lilman then turned around to escort the three of them back to his ship, but Olivia had other ideas.
"Actually, I need to call the chancellor before doing anything else. Also, make sure that all of your officers stay here and don't send any transmissions. This is a sensitive matter, and I don't want anything getting out prematurely." Olivia said, her tone calm, but the look in her eyes commanding.
Contin felt the smile on his face twitch at this request. He knew he had gotten wrapped up in something troubling, but it seemed that it was going to be even more difficult than he was expecting.
Just a couple of minutes later, Olivia had gotten ahold of Regina by going through Jasmine.
For nearly half an hour, the two of them discussed Olivia's plan and Regina added her own suggestions.
Soon they had worked things out, and Olivia faced her tablet towards Contin so that Regina could personally speak to him.
"Constable Lilman Contin, ma'am."
Immediately he stood up straighter, saluted, and introduced himself the moment that he saw Azade's chancellor.
"At ease, Constable Lilman. Allow me to thank you for coming to my special investigator's aid." Regina said, first giving her apperception for the constable's work.
"I'm afraid that you've now gotten involved in a sensitive matter that I've been having Olivia here look into. As such, it requires the upmost secrecy. To that end, I'll be sending a directive from the chancellor's office to your superior. Until then, I would personally ask that you remain where you are and listen to Special Investigator Olivia's requests."
With that, Regina ended the transmission and left things in Olvia's hands.
"Now, please gather up all of the thugs that attacked us. I need to speak with them." Olivia said, her lips twisted into a sinister smile.
Lilman shook when he saw this, and he pitied the poor saps that had attacked this monster of a woman.
It was not long before the entire site was fully contained, and Olivia had all of the living gang members lined up on one of Constable Lilman's squad's vessels.
All of them glowered at Olivia, and it was obvious that they had no intention of cooperating with her.
"Why don't you tell me who hired you and what exactly they wanted done?"
All Olivia received in response was silence. These guys did not seem like the type of keep secrets out of loyalty, so it was probably more because of spite.
"The first one to speak up will receive a full pardon for this crime by the chancellor herself. If you don't want to be locked up in a miserable prison for the rest of your pitifully lives, start talking."
This did not immediately loosen any tongues, but it certainly had the thugs looking around at each other. Trying to get a read on whether any of them would betray the group.
Yet, most surprisingly, it was the leader the spoke up first. More than happy to abandon his own subordinates if it would save his own cowardly ass.
"These boys don't know nothing. I'm the only one with the information you're looking for. I'll tell you what you want to know if it means avoiding prison."
Being suddenly betrayed by their boss, the other gang members started causing a fuss, but Olivia silenced them with a harsh glare.
After that, she got all of the information she wanted out of the thugs' leader. He was surprisingly cooperative, but that just went to show how much he wanted to avoid the trouble he had gotten himself into.
Once everything had been set up the way she wanted, Olivia left the gang members behind and moved over to Constable Lilman's ship with Havanna and Rorson in tow.
"Are you sure it was okay to let that man get away with this? He tried to kill you, and I doubt that he's going to become an upstanding citizen after learning his lesson." Constable Lilman said to Olivia.
"Yes, it's fine. I only promised him a pardon for this incident. I'm sure once dig into his affairs a little, you'll find plenty else to convict him on. Now, let's go back to your station. Ah, and make sure that no one else knows about us. The three of us are supposed to be dead after all."
