My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 440: Ancient Demons
Chapter 440: Ancient Demons
When we took the elevator that would take us to the 30th floor of G’Henna’s castle, we felt the massive structure shaking for a brief moment.
The rumbling didn’t last for more than ten seconds, but it was enough to startle us and make us prepare for battle, believing that something was coming for us.
"What was that...?" I wondered aloud.
It felt as if a strong fluctuation of demonic energy had covered the area for a brief second, only for it to dissipate as quickly as it appeared.
Jackson explained that it felt like a powerful demon had been summoned into the world, so we prepared ourselves for whatever awaited us on the upper floors.
As the elevator platform stopped, the doors opened, and the light from the outside blinded us momentarily, prompting me to raise my arm and cover my eyes.
When my vision adapted to the brightness, I was able to detail the buildings on the 30th floor, which resembled in style the ones we saw at the City of Eternal Night.
The bright light came from the ceiling, where a massive yellow orb illuminated the entire area. However, I couldn’t sense any MP coming from it, so I was curious to know how it worked.
Right as I stepped one foot out of the elevator, I felt something approaching me at high speeds, making me wave my hand out of instinct and release a flame arch to the side.
"Hmm?" I hummed, slightly confused, seeing a devil not too far from me, sliced in half after my spell hit right in between his eyes.
The devil had ashen-white skin, but his body and face resembled those of the fiends we fought on the first floors of the castle, so I thought they were just a slightly stronger version of them.
Still, when I turned my head to look at Jackson and Nessa, their eyes were widened in perplexion at the sight of the dead fiend.
"Jackson... Is that...?" Nessa muttered.
"Th-that’s an ancient fiend..." Jackson replied.
He explained to our group that any demon categorized as "ancient" was much stronger than any other demon of their type.
An ancient fiend could easily kill one hundred normal fiends. However, only another, much more powerful, ancient demon was able to summon them.
"An ancient demon can easily match the strength of a general..." Jackson continued.
Understanding that a powerful enemy was nearby, my group perked up and focused, determined to find the staircase or elevators to the upcoming floors.
Arashi and Frost pulled out their wings from their back while maintaining their human forms and began flying above the buildings to scout the area.
Vespera commanded a few of her demon spiders to scout from the ground stealthily, and the rest of our group simply walked along the main street of the abandoned city.
After I killed that first ancient fiend without much effort, it seemed like the rest of the demons on that floor started avoiding us.
Yoru would pop out of my shadow every few minutes, only for him to dash to an adjacent street, kill another demon, then return back to my shadow.
By the time the two dragons returned to us with the location of the next staircase, I was a bit annoyed at the fact that we had to chase the fiends around, as most of them weren’t trying to attack us out of fear.
At first, the objective was to clear the 30th floor so that our soldiers could place another camp up there, but it would still take hours for them to reach, and it wasn’t protected by a barrier like the 15th floor, so we decided to keep moving and find a better area.
After flying to the staircase, I was a bit disappointed when I didn’t see any more elevators, so we had to go up the stairs to the 31st floor, which looked exactly the same as the previous one.
There was another massive yellow orb hanging from the tall ceiling, illuminating the small city, and a few ancient fiends running around, trying to avoid us.
It took us a total of six hours to go from the 30th floor all the way up to the 40th, and every single level looked exactly the same.
They were all just abandoned cities, sharing the same type of architecture and illumination—and the only demons wandering around were the ashen-white ancient fiends.
Outside G’Henna’s castle, dusk was already coming down on the Lost Continent, so while we walked up the stairs to the 40th floor, I sent a message to the other groups of soldiers to tell them to rest at the camps we had built.
From what the soldiers said in their messages, we had secured resting areas on the first floor, near the staircase beside the labyrinth.
A second camp on the 5th floor, where the cyclops, Trachios, was guiding the groups of soldiers.
And a third camp on the 15th floor, which had a barrier that prevented any evil demons from entering, so it was technically the safest zone we had found.
Still, our group had just reached the 40th floor, and after having walked through ten levels that looked the same, we didn’t expect the 40th floor to be so different.
The walls were white with green accents that drew the shape of vines, and there were pictures hung up on the walls with random landscapes on them.
It felt as if we had entered a noble’s home, and compared to the floors we traversed before arriving, there was nothing illuminating the place, so we had to cast a few light motes to help.
As our group split up to check the different hallways, I found a door leading to a bedroom with a large bed that had golden ornaments all around it and a desk with a thick tome lying on top of it.
"Hmm?" I hummed as I approached the desk.
When I opened the book, I noticed that some of it was written in Roman letters, but there were also a few parts that had the common writing from this world.
It was strange to find a leatherback book in the tower, considering that it had been sunk under the sea a thousand years ago.
All the ancient writings we found were written on scrolls or stone tablets, so I was suspicious of the book.
As I flipped through the first pages, I realized the contents were a list of names. Some of them were written in Roman letters, and some of them weren’t.
There was no description or index to guide me, and as I kept flipping through the tome, the pages on the second half were completely black.
’Did someone dip these pages in a pool of ink?’ I wondered, placing a hand on my chin as I delved into my own thoughts.
