38: Chapter 37: Miami Dao Soldiers (Fourth Update)
With Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow guarding the village entrance, a group of people quietly skirted the entrance and appeared on a small hill by the river.
They looked greedily at the Large dirt mound behind the village.
A middle-aged man clad as an apothecary in the lead said, “Burning Hillock revealed an extraordinary light last night.
It seems that the opening is imminent.
We’ve been in this remote place for so long, and our hard work hasn’t been wasted.”
The others burst into laughter, “Hahaha…”
Suddenly, an untimely voice came, “A group of fools beneath the Responsive Object, do you dare to seize the Burning Opportunity?”
The apothecary’s face turned pale, and three flying swords rose behind him, tracing graceful arcs and pointing in different directions.
He guarded and shouted, “Who are you?”
Without hurry, three people emerged from the woods nearby – a chubby Taoist priest, a charming woman, and an old camel.
Old Camel grinned and said to the woman, “Lady Hamilton, it’s up to you now.”
The woman smiled, “All right.”
She took out a silk handkerchief and flicked it in the wind.
Countless vengeful ghosts poured out from it and pounced onto each of the people, gnawing at their bodies.
The cultivators tried a variety of methods, but none of them could harm the ghost beings!
Horrified screams echoed, “The Second Level…!”
In just a short while, the people were all killed.
The ghosts continued to crawl on the corpses, sucking blood and devouring flesh!
Old Camel, with his hands behind his back, said, “This is the fourth group of people.
We must have cleaned up all the nuisances.”
The Taoist priest and the woman were very respectful to Old Camel, “Thanks to your resourcefulness, Master Camel.”
Many cultivators of unknown origin had gathered at the County Town in these days.
No one knew where they got the news, but all of them wanted to obtain the Burning Opportunity.
They banded together into several alliances, and the three of Old Camel lay low, only striking yesterday as the Burning Hillock began to glow.
They patrolled outside the village, slaughtering all the other alliances!
Old Camel laughed, “This time, the opportunity of Burning Hillock is ours!” He patted the two of them, “Don’t worry, I won’t take it all for myself.
We three will share the spoils.
If there’s only enough for one, I will make it up to you with enough benefits.”
“Master Camel, you are generous,” both of them said.
The woman asked, “Shall we go?”
Old Camel shook his head, “We have been hiding in the County Town for these few days and have learned that there is something strange about this village.
Most likely it is suffused with evil energy.
I have always been cautious in my life, so we should not risk it blindly.”
The Taoist priest thought for a moment and said, “Why not let my Dao soldiers go and investigate?”
Old Camel nodded with a smile, “I’ve long heard of your mechanical Dao soldiers as a marvelous art.
Let me see it for myself.
Rest assured, if you succeed, I will count it as part of your reward.”
Guaranteed by Old Camel, the priest said no more and took out a small chessboard from his sleeve with some pieces on it.
He tossed the chessboard, and the pieces fell to the ground, turning into five mechanical Dao soldiers.
They were made of special wood, with metal joints.
The Taoist priest snapped his fingers and ordered, “Go―”
Five mechanical Dao soldiers stepped forward, walking down the hill and heading straight for the back of the village.
These soldiers moved somewhat mechanically.
The one at the front had a dark red battle flag and held a sabre.
Two more soldiers on either side had shields and goose-quill sabres.
Lastly, the final two soldiers had long spears and bows and arrows on their backs.
This team of mechanical Dao soldiers had both long-range and close-range capabilities.
They were very few opponents for the Taoist priest in the First Great Realm with these soldiers.
As the soldiers moved through the woods, they tried to avoid the villagers and went to scout out Burning Hillock.
Owen Bertram found two more Chain-tailed Dangling Fishing Birds and fed them to Little Loach.
When Little Loach had eaten enough, it floated on the water and didn’t want to move.
Owen sat on the shore, also lazily sunbathing.
Suddenly, a creaking noise approached him, and he immediately became alert, seeing several mechanical men emerge from the nearby woods.
On the hillside, the Taoist priest’s face changed, “They encountered someone…”
Old Camel said coldly, “Kill them!”
It was just an ordinary villager who would die anyway, but they were planning something big and couldn’t afford any leaks.
“All right,” the Taoist priest agreed.
The last two mechanical Dao soldiers lowered their arms, planted their spears in the ground, and took out bows and arrows from their backs.
They aimed at Owen and shot two wolf-tooth arrows.
The arrows shot by the Dao soldiers were magical instruments, incredibly fast and as powerful as flying swords.
After firing the arrows, the priest controlled the soldiers to put away their bows and take up their spears, preparing to continue their advance.
Just an ordinary villager, who would undoubtedly die under these two arrows.
But then, the Taoist priest exclaimed, and Old Camel and the woman asked, “What happened?”
The priest waved his hand, “The kid blocked it.
It seems we’ll be delayed a bit, but it won’t take long…
”
Owen curled up his body, and a turtle shell shield was already in front of him.
With two crisp sounds, both wolf-tooth arrows hit the shield and fell down, unable to penetrate the shield.
“What are these things?” Owen asked in confusion, but his hands didn’t hesitate.
He flipped his palm and released the Great Seal Apparition.
Boom!
A swimming pool-sized pit lay on the ground, two zhangs wide and three chi deep.
At the bottom, the five mechanical Dao soldiers lay flattened like shadow play figures.
The Taoist priest spat out a mouthful of blood, his face turning pale, and he sat on the ground.
Old Camel and the woman were shocked, “What happened?”
The priest’s face was full of horror, “That kid…
Master Camel, there’s something strange about this village!”
The priest hadn’t seen what had happened.
The Dao soldiers’ vision was limited, and he saw something flying out at an incredible speed.
Then a tremendous divine power fell, and the connection between him and the Dao soldiers was severed!
Old Camel’s eyes were filled with doubt.
They had been investigating this village repeatedly during their stay in the County Town.
It was just a place where people waited to die; there were no cultivators, likely due to the evil energy that prevented cultivation.
The woman said, “Could it be not a villager, but someone like us, here for the Burning Hillock Opportunity?”
All three of them looked uneasy, thinking that they had eliminated all the riffraff, but someone had already sneaked in, and they were powerful as well.
Old Camel slowly said, “This person is strong enough to destroy five Dao soldiers in one blow, which means they’re at the Second Level.
I’ll have to deal with this myself!”
Lady Hamilton laughed, “Not necessarily.
Why don’t we let my children take a look?”
Lady Hamilton had even more power than the Taoist priest, already at the Second Level, and her pet ghost beings were the most unpredictable.
“Very well,” Old Camel agreed.
