My Baby Daddy Isn't Human-Chapter 219: Midnight Notes
The mansion was quiet. Too quiet.
Elion sat alone in the music room, a glass of dark liquor in his hand. The golden liquid caught the dim light of the chandelier above, reflecting faint ripples as he swirled the glass absentmindedly. His gaze was distant, fixed on the grand piano in front of him, yet he made no move to touch it.
It had been years since he last played. Longer than he could remember. His fingers twitched slightly, as if recalling the feeling of ivory beneath them, the way music used to flow effortlessly from his soul. He used to love it. Used to find peace in it. Now, it was nothing but a reminder of another life—one he had long abandoned.
Elion let out a slow breath, taking another sip of his drink as his mind drifted.
The other day, he had walked into this very room, expecting nothing but silence. But instead, he had found Raelynn sitting at the piano, her fingers hovering uncertainly over the keys. She wasn’t playing—not really. Just pressing a few notes at random, as if testing the sound, watching them blend together with a sort of quiet fascination.
It had been almost… cute.
She didn’t notice him at first, too focused on whatever she was thinking about. Her brows were slightly furrowed, lips pressed together in a way that suggested deep concentration—though she clearly had no idea what she was doing. The sounds she produced were hesitant, clumsy, but oddly endearing.
Exhaling, he tipped back the glass, letting the burn of the liquor settle deep in his throat. The warmth spread through his chest, but it didn’t reach the cold lingering within him.
Then—a creak at the doorway.
Elion didn’t look up, but he already knew who it was.
"Couldn’t sleep?" he asked, voice low, almost blending with the silence of the room.
Raelynn hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. She wore a loose, comfortable shirt that hung just slightly off one shoulder, her hair draping over it in soft waves. She looked like she had tried to sleep but failed.
"Neither could you," she noted, her voice softer, thoughtful. Then she tilted her head. "How did you know it was me?"
Elion smirked faintly, finally looking at her. "I always know when it’s you."
Silence stretched between them. The air felt heavier than before, filled with something unspoken. Then, at last, Elion’s fingers drifted toward the piano, brushing over the keys once. A single note resonated in the quiet room, low and deep.
Raelynn took another step closer. "Didn’t you say you’d teach me?"
Elion raised a brow, amusement flickering across his expression. "I did."
Raelynn nodded. "Then teach me."
His brow furrowed slightly. "Now?"
"Why not?" She moved closer, then slid onto the bench beside him. The wood creaked slightly beneath their weight, and she glanced at him expectantly.
Elion sighed, placing his glass down on the piano’s surface. "It’s the middle of the night."
Raelynn arched a brow. "And?"
"And," Elion leaned back slightly, crossing his arms, "night is when people are supposed to rest. That includes you, if you count as people."
Raelynn let out a soft laugh, nudging his arm. "That was almost funny."
Before he could respond, she abruptly pressed down on the keys, producing a discordant, jumbled sound that made Elion wince. She grinned. "Okay, what’s the first step?"
Elion eyed her for a moment, then exhaled through his nose, shaking his head slightly. It seemed like Raelynn was serious about this. He wasn’t sure what had suddenly inspired her to learn, but judging by the way she looked up at him expectantly, she wasn’t going to let this go.
Fine.
He supposed he could entertain her—for a little while, at least.
With an exaggerated sigh, he set his glass down on the small table beside him and shifted forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "Okay, we start with the basics. Notes are like steps on a staircase. Each key is a step up or down." He lifted his hand, pointing at a few keys in sequence. "This is C, D, E, F, G… These are the natural notes. There are also sharps and flats."
Raelynn followed his movements closely, eyes flickering between his fingers and the keys. She hesitated, then tried to mimic his actions. Her fingers pressed against the keys cautiously, and she managed to repeat the notes—almost correctly.
Elion watched her, something unreadable in his expression. "Not bad."
"I know," she said playfully before trying again.
A small chuckle rumbled in Elion’s chest, but he masked it quickly. "Now let’s try a simple progression." He played a short, smooth sequence, then gestured for her to follow.
Raelynn attempted it, but fumbled on the last note. She pouted slightly. "Ugh. Again."
He nodded, guiding her hand this time, his fingers brushing against hers lightly. His touch was cool, steady. Under his guidance, she tried once more—and this time, it was right.
A quiet sense of satisfaction flickered in her eyes. "I did it."
"You did," Elion murmured, his gaze lingering on her a moment longer than necessary.
Elion’s gaze drifted, almost absentmindedly, from her fingers still resting on the keys to her face. Or rather—to her lips.
They were glossy. A soft sheen caught the dim lighting of the room, reflecting just enough for him to notice.
Did she put something on them?
His mind supplied the vague knowledge that women used things like lip balm or gloss—some kind of product to make them shine, he supposed. He had never paid attention to details like that before, but now, with Raelynn sitting this close, it was impossible not to.
The air shifted between them. Raelynn swallowed, suddenly aware of how close they were. The dim lighting cast soft shadows over Elion’s face, highlighting the sharpness of his features—the defined line of his jaw, the cool intensity in his eyes.
And then, before she could stop herself, she asked, "Why did you investigate me?"
Elion’s hand froze in the air.
The question hung in the air, suffocating in its weight. His fingers, which had just been guiding hers, curled into a fist before he pressed a single, deliberate note on the piano. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
