Raelynn’s eyelids fluttered open slowly, the harsh brightness of the overhead lamp making her squint. The sterile white ceiling above her seemed unfamiliar, and the steady beep of machines filled the air. Her head felt heavy, and her body ached as if she had been sleeping for hours.

"Thank God you’re awake."

The voice startled her. She turned her head to the side, her gaze landing on Axel sitting on the chair beside her bed. His brown hair was slightly disheveled, and his green eyes were clouded with worry. The sight of him made something inside her chest tighten.

"Axel..." her voice came out hoarse, barely above a whisper.

Axel’s tense shoulders seemed to relax at the sound of her voice. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "How are you feeling? You scared the hell out of me."

Raelynn blinked a few times, trying to push away the fog in her head. "What... happened?"

Axel’s lips pressed into a thin line. He glanced at her, then at the floor as if trying to piece together the right words. "We were at the park... under the tree. You fainted all of a sudden. Do you remember?"

Her heart skipped a beat as the memory slowly came back—how the dizziness had washed over her, the way the world had blurred around her before everything went dark.

Raelynn closed her eyes for a moment before giving a small nod. "Yeah... I remember."

Her eyes drifted around the room, the sterile scent of disinfectant filling her nose. The IV line attached to her arm and the heart monitor beeping steadily only confirmed where she was.

"You brought me to the hospital?" she asked softly.

Axel’s worried gaze softened. "Of course. What did you expect me to do? Leave you there?"

Raelynn’s lips twitched faintly, almost a smile, but guilt quickly replaced it. "I’m sorry... for making you worry... and thank you... for bringing me here."

Axel leaned back in his chair, letting out a sigh of relief. "Don’t apologize. I’m just glad you’re okay. You really gave me a scare back there."

Raelynn’s hand instinctively moved to her stomach, her fingers trembling as they rested against the slight curve. Her heart thudded painfully against her ribs.

Is the baby alright...?

She wanted to ask, but the words caught in her throat. Her mind echoed Elion’s warning—no one could know.

The silence between them stretched, only broken by the rhythmic beeping of the machines.

Then Axel spoke again.

"The doctor said it was because of fatigue... because you’re pregnant."

Raelynn’s heart dropped to her stomach. Her breath caught, and her fingers curled slightly against the thin hospital blanket. Slowly, she turned her head toward Axel, meeting his gaze.

His eyes were wide, disbelief flickering beneath the surface. There was no judgment in them, only surprise and something else she couldn’t quite place.

"I..." Raelynn opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Axel leaned forward slightly. "I didn’t know... you were pregnant."

Raelynn’s throat felt dry. She forced herself to swallow. "Yeah..."

Axel’s brows knitted together, but he didn’t press her for more. Instead, he glanced away, giving her a bit of space.

"Should I... call the father?" he asked carefully, breaking the silence.

Raelynn’s heart clenched painfully. Her grip on the blanket tightened, but she quickly shook her head. "No... it’s fine."

Axel’s lips quirked into a small, almost teasing smile. "Why? Is he the jealous type? Would he get mad seeing you with another man?"

Raelynn tried to force a smile, but it felt stiff on her lips. Her heart pounded faster as she averted her gaze. "It’s not that..."

Axel’s smile faded slightly, sensing the tension in her voice. His green eyes softened, but he didn’t push any further.

"Okay," he said quietly. "If you don’t want me to call him... I won’t."

The room fell into silence again, the only sounds the faint hum of machines and the distant murmur of hospital staff outside. Raelynn felt as if she were walking on a thin line, each step threatening to expose the truth she was trying so hard to hide.

Axel let out a long breath, breaking the quiet. "You really scared me, you know."

Raelynn’s heart squeezed. Her eyes flicked toward him, guilt twisting in her chest. "I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

Axel’s lips tugged into a faint smile, but there was still worry in his eyes. "You don’t have to apologize... just take better care of yourself, okay?"

Raelynn gave a small nod, feeling her heart ache at how kind he was—how undeserving she felt of his concern.

"When can I go home?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Axel glanced toward the door. "I’ll ask the doctor." He stood up, brushing his fingers through his messy hair. "I’ll be right back."

Raelynn watched him disappear through the door, leaving her alone with the heavy silence.

Her heart thudded faster as she sat up slowly, wincing at the lingering dizziness. She glanced toward the small bedside table, spotting her bag. With shaky fingers, she reached out and unzipped it, pulling out her phone.

The screen was black—completely dead.

Her heart skipped a beat as she quickly grabbed the charger and plugged it in. The dull red bar taunted her—0%—but at least it was charging. She leaned back against the pillows, rubbing her temples. The dizziness was still there, a faint, lingering sensation that made her stomach turn.

She sighed. There was nothing to do now but wait.

Her fingers tapped against the sheets as she stared at the screen, watching the slow crawl of numbers. 1%... 2%...

She exhaled through her nose and let her head fall back. Maybe she should get up, walk around a little—shake off this sluggish feeling. But she still felt a little too lightheaded for that.

Instead, she let her eyes drift to the ceiling, her mind wandering.

What time was it, anyway? Late, probably. Her body certainly felt like it had been through the wringer.

5%... 6%...

She frowned, chewing on her bottom lip. She should probably check her messages once it was on. Not that she was expecting anything urgent, but still…

Oh, finally—10%. Good enough. Raelynn unplugged the charger, pressed the power button.

The device lit up after a few minutes, the screen flickering to life. As soon as it powered on, a flood of missed calls and messages filled the screen.

Her breath caught in her throat.

Most of the missed calls were from one name.

Elion.

Raelynn’s heart pounded as she stared at the notifications. Her stomach twisted painfully.

With trembling fingers, she tapped on his name and pressed the call button.
