Murim's Weakest Princess-Chapter 158: Yan Ping’s Biggest Fan
Chapter 158: Yan Ping’s Biggest Fan
The day off that Anji had flew by too quickly. Although she could not see Gu Ying in the evening, she managed to deliver the letters she had saved through Pearl.
Today, she was going to meet a new researcher recommended by Senior Researcher Mo, who seemed to know who she truly was. Although not obvious to anyone else, Anji saw the senior researcher’s slight bow towards her when nobody else was looking. There were only two reasons for an older person to bow to a younger person. The first was out of gratitude, and the second was as a sign of respect towards someone important. Some people might mistake his actions for gratitude because Anji helped out in the surgery. However, his polite tone might indicate otherwise. While Senior Researcher Mo spoke informally to everyone else, he chose his words carefully around Anji, suggesting instead of commanding.
One of the things the senior researcher suggested was to intern under Researcher Xi.
At first, Anji was hesitant. She had no idea why a researcher would deliberately seek her out and request a favour from someone superior. Anji did not mind. However, Senior Researcher Mo’s caution made Anji hesitant to accept the deal.
"She’s the sect leader’s biggest fan," he informed Anji. "After learning about the chore spells you invented, she wants you to come under her wing. In fact, she has been making such a fuss that almost all the active senior researchers know about it."
It was risky. Anji was technically undercover as an apprentice to learn the ropes of the sect. However, if she were to work with her shifu’s biggest fan, there was a huge possibility Researcher Xi would figure out her identity before the time was right.
"I’ll be careful," Anji replied. "I won’t bring extra trouble to my shifu."
With a hardened gaze, it took a while before Senior Researcher Mo was convinced.
Finally sighing with resignation, the senior researcher nodded and told Anji to finish her breakfast quickly. Although Assistant Hu was meant to be resting, he had a feeling the stubborn man would be helping his childhood sweetheart with her research now that they had a new insight, thanks to Anji.
Aunt Wine checked on the only two people in the mess hall this morning and wondered if they would be fine. Senior Researcher Mo was a strict man who did not tolerate nonsense. His strictness might scare Anji. No matter how much she thought about it, Senior Researcher Mo’s offer to escort Anji to her new internship residence was very out of character. Thanks to Researcher Ke putting in a good word for Anji, plenty of researchers on the third street were looking forward to adopting Anji for a day. The man was recommending someone else personally, and Aunt Wine had no idea who Researcher Xi was. At the very least, it was not a name within the western district.
"Do you know how to heat up food?" Senior Researcher Mo asked.
Anji nodded. If she could reach the stove, she knew how to heat food up the traditional way. If not, she could always cheat a little by sticking a heating spell to the bottom of porcelain bowls.
Satisfied with her answer, the man got up to ask the kitchen crew to pack a lunch box for Anji. Aunt Wine’s bad feelings from earlier turned into a reality when she learned that Researcher Xi was not someone from the western district.
"Are you really bringing her to the research central?" she gasped. "What if something happens to her again?"
Hearing the head chef’s concern, the senior researcher paused. It had not even been a week, but their successor had already charmed so many people. The sect leader was right. They should have scheduled for Anji to rotate between districts weekly. However, not all the district managers were happy about babysitting a child. If it weren’t for Aunt Wine’s love for children and the infirmary located in the western district, he would have pushed the child to be cared for in the central where her talents would shine greater.
"I’ll be there," he told the head chef calmly. "She will be under my watch in the central. I’ll bring her back earlier to check in with Doctor Yun. You can have her after that."
Unable to argue back, Aunt Wine conceded and stuffed a huge lunch box, including extra snacks in case Anji was hungry. From what the senior researcher could tell, that was too much food for a child. Besides, it was too heavy for a child to carry a three-tier lunch box alone while walking to the research central. It must be her petty form of revenge to make him carry it for her.
After Anji finished her breakfast, Senior Researcher Mo immediately picked the girl up into his arm while holding onto the ridiculously pretty three-tier lunch box in the other arm.
"We’re going now," he told the girl. "Hold on tight, or you might fall."
Unsure what he meant, Anji held onto his shoulder with one arm as the man walked outside the mess hall. However, her calm turned into a small shriek of panic when the senior researcher took a huge leap into the air, jumping onto the roof using his light foot skills. Clutching onto the man tighter with both arms now, Anji saw how quickly they left the western district behind.
With many questions swimming in her head, Anji could only watch as they left the western district she had just become familiar with. Looking ahead, Anji saw the inner court entrance she entered on the first day with Pearl. Were they going to leave the sect?
Unsurprisingly, they continued forward. Anji tried to take in as much as she could, remembering the layout of the sect as they entered a new district. She only knew there was an eastern district but not anything else.
"We are heading to the research central," Senior Researcher Mo finally explained. "It’s located in the north, closer to the sect leader’s meditation chambers. The research central is a place where the elites of the sect gather to be taught by a collective group of senior researchers. The sect leader sometimes drops by to give her guidance, although rarely."
Hearing it was a place for elites, Anji’s eyes widened. Why was an elite researcher looking for her?
