On a street inside the necropolis that was wholly infected by zombies and ghouls, Zac and Curtis were finished killing dozens of undead monsters when they decided to stop for a moment.

The pair had walked to a street where a large mall had been completely encased by the death's ichor, and sensing that it was filled with more undead, they decided to clear the mall.

It was a large structure with four stories, each of them expansive enough to hold at least thirty stores per floor.

The rooftop was made of glass, which allowed natural light to illuminate the inside of the building, but the perpetual overcast that surrounded Limsa made it quite dark for the pair to see.

"Illuminare…" Curtis muttered, casting a basic spell that produced a shiny flame, which began to float in the air and illuminated their surroundings.

Curtis' spell wasn't as bright as the sun, but it was enough for them to discern and see the zombies and ghouls wandering around.

It only took them a few minutes to eliminate the monsters on the ground floor, and as they walked to the escalators, which were halted by the death's ichor, Zac noticed a gaming store next to it.

"Man, what a waste…" Zac commented.

The death's ichor had corrupted everything in the store, and while Zac took a quick look around, Curtis checked a small market that had also been corrupted.

The redhead considered the destroyed gaming store to be a waste, but the market selling food and drinks was the real waste to Curtis.

Suddenly, a zombie appeared from inside the gaming store, startling Zac. When he turned around, he noticed that the undead was quite short.

"A kid…!?" Zac exclaimed, taking a step back with caution.

The little kid's skin was rotting, his jaw was hanging from his face, and his expression seemed to be frozen in eternal pain.

When Zac detailed the tattered clothing on the zombie child, he saw that he was wearing a shirt with the logo of one of his favorite fantasy-adventure games—Dragons and Knights—making the redhead's heart sink.

"How unfair…" Zac muttered, gritting his teeth with anger and sadness.

On his way to the corrupted mall, he had dispatched over a dozen adult zombies and ghouls, but he hadn't had the time to take a good look at them. However, now that he saw the reality of the victims, he started to hesitate.

"You like D&K, huh? It's one of my favorite games, too…" Zac said to the zombie, knowing full well that the child couldn't understand him.

As the undead became aware of Zac's presence, the kid rushed at him at full speed, loudly screeching while flailing his arms.

For a brief moment, Zac raised his baseball bat and prepared himself to counter the zombie. However, he hesitated and lowered his weapon, placing his forearm forward and allowing the child to bite into it.

When the undead gripped the arm with his teeth like a ferocious animal, he ripped a piece of meat from Zac's forearm, making him grit his teeth in pain.

Still, the zombie seemed aware of his size, and instead of following up on his attack, he ran to the corner of the store and began munching on the slab of meat he had taken from the redhead.

"Ugh…" Zac scoffed in pain as he watched the child eating, his blood dripping on the corrupted ground beneath him.

"Zac, are you okay!?" Curtis exclaimed, entering the gaming store and seeing Zac's forearm bleeding profusely as a whole part of his muscle was ripped apart.

"What the hell are you doing, man?" Curtis asked, approaching his friend with caution.

"I can't do it…" Zac muttered his reply, looking down with apprehension and clenching his bleeding arm.

When Curtis scanned the surroundings and saw the child munching his food in the corner, the blond understood the situation.

Zac wasn't raised in a mafia family, so when it came to dirty jobs that questioned his morality, the redhead had trouble deciding what was the best course of action.

It was easy at first since all he had to fight were demons and monsters from hell, and even then, he hesitated to end their lives whenever they could speak.

One living proof of Zac's good-hearted nature was Saris, the banshee, who would have been executed on the spot if she had encountered anyone else from the Jade Dragons at the time.

"Heal yourself, Zac. I'll do this…" Curtis said with a gentle tone, wanting to get the weight off his friend's shoulders.

"No… I can't just let you do all the dirty work. I'm now a member of the Jade Dragons, you know? I'll fulfill my role," Zac replied with a low tone and a severe expression.

It was the first time that Curtis had seen Zac so upset, and he could understand his feelings.

"Zac, no matter what happens here, you are a good guy… Remember that," Curtis said, turning around and giving Zac a bit of room.

Without using the healthstone in his pocket to heal his arm, the redhead clenched his baseball bat and slowly approached the zombie child, who kept eating and gnawing the slab of meat.

"I'm sorry…" Zac muttered, a small tear trailing down his cheek.

As Curtis waited outside the store, he heard a loud 'bang,' letting him know that Zac had finished the deed, and when the redhead walked outside, Curtis could sense a strange and ominous aura flowing from his body.

"Heal your arm, Zac. We are not done yet…" Curtis commented.

"Ah, right…" Zac replied, seemingly forgetting that a piece of his forearm had been ripped apart.

After he used the healthstone in his pocket, his torn muscle returned to normal, but Zac's mood didn't improve a single bit.

Curtis could feel a strong surge of necrotic energy coming from the mall's top floor, so the pair decided to clean the rest of the building from the undead, floor by floor, store by store.ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
