Modern World Warlock-Chapter 277: The Holy Death Knight
A few days after Dante was given the cure to the arcane resonance plaguing his body, the members of the GTS and Azure Rebels factions returned to their territories, knowing that an attack from the cartel was imminent.
When Megan explained that the flesh sprout with Lexia's soul was placed on the edge of the necropolis on purpose, the people understood that it was meant to be a taunt.
Of course, Netherius wasn't expecting Dante to save Lexia, but now that he had done it and was unconscious, it was the perfect window for the necromancer to attack his enemies.
On the north side of the country, the vampires were split and sent to different cities to protect, and the Azure Rebels supported them with a group of androids.
In the city of Cerulis, nighttime had arrived, and the elder vampire, Balthazar, stood at the top of a tall skyscraper overlooking the city. Beside him, his little sister and vampire sentinel, Madeline, was sitting down listening to music on her earphones.
The moment that Balthazar decided to relax for a moment and light up a cigarette, he felt a sudden chill down his spine that made him halt with the lighter right in front of him.
"Madeline… Did you feel that?" Balthazar pondered, grabbing the cigarette off his mouth and gently stowing it away.
"Hmm? I didn't feel anythi- !!" Madeline's sentence was cut off when she felt the eerie coldness running down her back.
The vampire sentinel paused the music she was listening to and dropped her headphones down to her shoulders, scanning her surroundings with care.
"That way," Balthazar pointed at a building in the distance.
When the two vampire siblings extruded their bat wings and began flying toward the origin of the strange energy, a fiery explosion encased the building in green flames, making them stop mid-air momentarily.
"Uhh, bro?" Madeline uttered with a bit of fear seeping into her body.
Balthazar lowered his gaze with a severe expression, peeking out his sunglasses with his red eyes to get a better look at the fire, prompting him to keep moving.
As soon as they were less than a hundred meters away from their destination, they looked up and saw a massive, black veil shrouding the area around the fiery building.
"What the hell is that?" Madeline pondered, looking up and seeing the veil expanding.
"It feels like some sort of blockade…" Balthazar replied.
After a few seconds passed, the veil had covered a radius of two hundred meters around the building that exploded, with hundreds of citizens and the two vampires also trapped inside.
Right outside the fiery building, random citizens were running for their lives as a pack of ghouls were pursuing and killing the people in cold blood. However, instead of using their claws, the ghouls had their hands replaced with what looked like an android hand.
Their mechanical hands had claws that looked like syringes holding a strange, green liquid inside of them, which the ghouls forcefully injected into the people.
The vampires noticed that the victims were dying and turning into undead in mere seconds, so they understood that they were using the weapons they had developed while holding the Azure Rebels hostage.
Still, even with all the ghouls running around, the vampires could feel a much more intense presence inside the building that was lit on fire, and after a few seconds, they saw a man clad in armor walking out of the green flames, utterly unharmed.
"Is that a Death Knight?" Madeline pondered.
She had seen the Death Knight that attacked Dante and Laurent in the underwater cave, but the man at the bottom seemed to be on a completely different level.
When Madeline turned to look at her brother, she saw Balthazar glaring down at the knight, clenching his cane tightly, which surprised her since Balthazar was usually composed and cool.
"Madeline, I'll take that guy. You go for the ghouls… Be careful," the elder vampire muttered.
The vampire sentinel nodded, and in the blink of an eye, the two of them dropped from the sky down to the street before the flaming building, producing a shockwave on their landing spot that blasted away a few ghouls.
As the smoke dissipated, Madeline began her assault on the ghouls, moving as quickly as possible and slicing their heads with the back of her hands.
Balthazar stood a few meters before the Death Knight, and when he detailed the engravings on his armor with the emblem of the Pantheon of Four, he got confused.
The elder vampire knew about the emblem since his mother, Asphodel, had shown it to him before, and he was aware of how much his mother hated the gods from her world.
However, he couldn't understand why someone who used to serve the gods from Terra would become a Death Knight for a necromancer.
"A vampire?" The Death Knight muttered, his voice deep and strangely soothing.
"That's a strange emblem to wear while serving a necromancer, don't you think, sir?" Balthazar replied, using his cane to point at his armor.
"All of my actions are done in the service of the gods," the knight replied.
"I see. What's your name, sir?" Balthazar asked with a respectful tone.
"Isidor… What's yours, vampire?" he casually replied.
"Balthazar, Elder Vampire… So, you were a holy knight, huh? How does someone like you end up working for a necromancer?" Balthazar continued, trying to gather more information about the individual.
"There'd be no reason for me to tell you that. It's irrelevant now," Isidor replied, but Balthazar couldn't see his expression as his helm covered his whole face.
"I understand… Well, I can't allow you to continue whatever you are doing here. If I ask you nicely to stop, will you leave?" Balthazar asked.
"I'm afraid I can't do that," Isidor replied, holding his sword and getting on guard.
"Unfortunate…" Balthazar muttered, grabbing the end of his cane and pulling it out, revealing a thin blade that was hidden inside.
In an instant, the vampire and the Death Knight clashed their weapons, generating a blast that shook the ground momentarily.
'This could be troublesome…' Balthazar thought.
