Chapter 158: The vampire and the human

Few minutes ago in the part of the forest where Belle was and was surrounded by Cordelia and her friends.

"Beat her up!" Cordelia ordered her lackeys, an evil smile gracing her face as she watched fear register in the heart of the human, even though she did not show it on her face.

Cordelia might have lost her father’s backing, but she had begun to carve a path to the top with the wealth of the Cliftons, and her friends who had turned their backs on her had come back to her, and were eager to please her enough that they had all jumped at the mention of helping her take her sweet revenge today.

Joshua Clifton was an easy man to manipulate without her even compelling him. He liked beautiful and alluring women; all she had to do was appear innocent and beautiful to him, and he was head over heels, so much so that he was already promising to divorce his useless wife and marry her.

The man was so naïve and stupid that she couldn’t help but like him for what he could give her. Now, all she had to do was get rid of her cousin’s wife, and she would be at peace with her upcoming new life of wealth.

At her words, one of her friends moved to do the work of beating up the human. It was a vampiress with short, neck length hair and glistening light red eyes that showed she wasn’t a pureblood.

"Stephanie, how good of you. I want you to break both her legs and hands, make sure she will never be able to walk with them," Cordelia said to her friend.

"Consider it done, Cordie. I will disfigure her in no time," said the vampiress, whose name was Stephanie. She looked more like a hooligan than a noble, with her hairstyle and stance. She handed her weapon to another member and began to step toward the human she planned to beat black and blue today.

Though Belle tried to mask her fears, she was terrified, and despite herself, her feet began to step back as the vampiress walked toward her, cracking her knuckles and turning her neck, a smirk playing on her face.

Belle had no fighting skills, and even if she did, her strength would never compare to that of a vampire. She couldn’t run nor hide, and Cordelia’s earlier remarks about Rohan being "taken care of" still lingered in her heart, squeezing it with an unease so sharp it made her believe the vampiress hadn’t been bluffing, something had happened to him.

She wouldn’t have worried that he would be harmed if she had not seen how he was trying to hide his vulnerable state and weakness when they were together. What could they have done to him?

Belle backed away until her back hit the tree behind her, and the vampiress who came to stand before her laughed.

Belle’s heart was beating so fast she could hear it pounding in her head and ears. She did not look forward to being beaten or even killed here, and she reached out her hand to clutch her crossbow, which she had dropped against the tree last night when she went to meet Rohan.

However, before she could grab it, the vampiress raised her hand, grabbed a handful of her hair, yanked her forward, and shoved her to the ground, causing her elbow to crash hard against a boulder. Pain shot through her arms and knees, but she hurriedly turned around, crawling back in a scramble of panic.

From the corner of her eye, Belle saw Cordelia laughing like she was thoroughly enjoying the show, while from the other side, Lady Benedict and her friend slowly zipped their tent closed and slipped back inside, clearly not wanting to get involved.

Many had learned to pretend they saw nothing when something like this was happening—thus, the two women remained hidden away in silence, preserving their own safety. They never truly liked the Duchess anyway, her death was none of their business.

"Humans, so fragile and stupid," Stephanie sneered as she raised her leg high, aiming to break Belle’s leg where she lay on the ground.

But before her foot could land against Belle, Stephanie was suddenly yanked back, her balance thrown off, and she was pushed aside unexpectedly. Her leg twisted awkwardly beneath her, and she fell hard to the ground with a surprised grunt.

Belle, who had curled up and braced herself for the blow, lifted her head when a shadow fell over her. Blinking through the blur of panic, she saw Evenly standing protectively in front of her, facing the vampiress who had just attempted to hurt her.

"That’s enough fun, Lady Cordelia. Let the girl be," Evenly said quietly, her voice steady as she turned her gaze toward Stephanie, who was rising from the ground with a scowl etched deep into her bruised pride. She had been caught off guard!

Stephanie was stepping to deal with the red haired human when Cordelia stopped her with a raise of her hand.

"Are you forgetting the protocols, Lady Clifton?" Cordelia said with an amused face. "You are to pretend you see nothing, or you will be included with the woman behind you. Do you have a death wish?"

Evenly scoffed. "Shouldn’t you be ashamed of yourself, my lady? You should be ashamed and remain within the walls of your house instead of being out here trying to act mighty when you are nothing. You’re picking on the weak to make yourself feel like you’re something. For a vampire... you seem to be acting too desperate to climb back up by leeching onto a human, the same creature I heard you despised."

Ever since Evenly had found out that Cordelia was the reason she was now being threatened out of marriage, her hatred for the vampiress had mounted to such an extent that she believed no amount of time could quench it.

Though she had only recently gotten to know Belle, Evenly would never live with herself if she stood by and watched them kill her without at least trying to defend her.

Cordelia’s amusement quickly fell and was replaced by an ugly expression at the insult. She stepped forward and came to stand in front of the human.

"Don’t buy yourself death, human. I did not come here for you, but if you do not fucking shut that hole on your face and step aside, you won’t like the outcome," came the cold warning from the vampiress.

Then a smile graced her face as she continued, "You said I should be ashamed? Of what, of wanting a life? What about you? Shouldn’t you be ashamed that you’ve been married for years now and have not given birth to a single child for your husband? Before you insult, check yourself first. You are nothing but a barren bitch."

At Cordelia’s remarks, her friends let out a bark of amused laughter, and Evenly’s blood boiled as her hands fisted tightly at her sides.

"If you know what’s best for you, human, step aside and let us deal with the bitch behind you." Cordelia tapped Evenly’s shoulder as she said those words.

"Before you can kill her, you’ll have to go through me first," Evenly gritted, resentment shining in her clear blue eyes as they met the vampiress who was still smiling.
