Chapter 866: Chapter 361: Showdown?_2

Gu Tongshu’s eyes lit up: "Wait! Let’s go together!"

Fishing? Your Mr. Gu is an absolute master at that!

The farm had all the equipment ready and waiting. He asked Wang Gang to carry two fishing sets, while the driver pushed a cart filled with fish bait. Huhu la-la, they headed to the small lake.

Lifeng Lake was a man-made lake, but in reality, there was a small stream that wasn’t wide nor deep, running down from the mountainside near the farm. Spring water bubbled up from between the rocks, meandering and eventually flowing into the lake.

"The water quality of this lake is particularly excellent. Wild fish fry are stocked in it every year. The meat is tender, not earthy or fishy, better tasting than most tropical sea fish."

Gu Tongshu bragged on and on, but eventually, the real intent revealed itself.

"Come on, let’s have a match. Let’s see who catches more!"

Su Huai was inwardly grinning ear to ear, but his expression remained indifferent. He replied lazily with a snort: "Boring... What’s in it for me?"

Gu Tongshu was similarly thrilled inside but maintained composure on his face.

"A prize?" He furrowed his brows and thought for a moment, then hesitated before adding, "How about a small and easy-to-achieve bet?"

"Too vague."

"We’re people of status. I can afford to lose no problem. What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you’re scared?"

He retreated, baiting the pursuit, and cornered Su Huai step by step.

Su Huai pondered for a moment and, reluctantly, agreed: "Alright, let’s bet based on the total weight. We can only use our own skills to fish—keep it fair and no cheating!"

"Tch!"

Gu Tongshu curled his lip disdainfully: "With my master-level skills, I’ll have to go easy so as not to crush you too badly!"

With his goal achieved, there was no longer a need to act, so he immediately ramped up the taunting.

Su Huai, however, didn’t engage in verbal sparring. He found a fishing spot, tossed bait casually into the distance, and sat down to get started.

In his previous life, Su Huai dabbled in fishing for a bit—not very skilled because he found it boring. But he understood the process.

Now, despite being a little rusty, everything he did still looked decent.

Gu Tongshu, on the other hand, took it to another level. Brimming with enthusiasm, he carefully kneaded bait balls, concentrated on setting up his spot, tested the waters, adjusted his equipment repeatedly, submerged his fish basket, and ceremonially cast his line...

He was professional, proactive, methodical, and his face practically screamed, "I WILL WIN."

But then...

He had just settled into position when, inexplicably, Su Huai already hooked a fish.

"Whoa, is it really this easy to catch?"

Gou Huai gleefully reeled in his catch, fumbling a bit with the line, but it didn’t stop him from successfully pulling up a half-pound wild bream.

"Lucky start!"

Gou Huai grinned smugly, held up the fish for Gu Tongshu to see clearly, then tossed it into his fish basket.

Gu Tongshu was so consumed with jealousy that his eyes turned red—losing at other things was tolerable, but fishing? Never!

Soon enough, he managed to catch a fish too.

There was indeed a technical gap between them. Old Gu skillfully reeled in a one-pound carp.

"Hmm, not bad at all," he remarked.

He carefully adjusted the fish’s position, letting sunlight reflect off its scales, stinging every fiber of Gou Huai’s pride before triumphantly placing it in his basket.

"Take it slow, kid. You never know who’ll have the last laugh—that’s still undecided!"

Terrible! He was getting cocky!

The situation worsened further: in the next ten minutes, Su Huai didn’t hook a single fish, while Old Gu caught two more.

They weren’t particularly big, but in terms of both quantity and weight, Su Huai was thoroughly crushed.

The most infuriating part was how Old Gu flaunted every fish he caught, making sure to rub it in Su Huai’s face.

This was unbearable.

When Gu Tongshu’s float bobbed a fourth time, Su Huai suddenly spoke: "Uncle Gu, dare to raise the stakes?"

"Hmm?"

Gu Tongshu froze.

What was going on? Puppy couldn’t possibly be throwing the match, could he?

"What are your terms for raising the bet?"

Remaining cautious, Gu Tongshu focused on the fish nibbling at the bait. Judging by the tug strength, it was clearly a big one.

Just as those words left his mouth, Gou Huai pounced with a verbal ambush.

"Simple—if I lose, I’ll cut ties with Gu Jiuyue forever. I’ll quit hanging out with her. If you lose..."

"Damn it!"

Before Su Huai could finish his sentence, Gu Tongshu was startled so much he jerked the line upward forcefully. Snap! The line broke.

He stared at the rippling water, utterly dumbfounded, on the verge of tears.

After hesitating five seconds or so, he erupted furiously, pointing at Su Huai’s nose and jumping up and down while cursing: "Gou Dongxi! You did that on purpose! You rotten little bastard, pay me back my fish!"

"Hahaha..."

Su Huai planted his fishing rod beside him and laughed so hard he nearly collapsed, overwhelmed with glee.

Sure, he didn’t catch anything, but scaring away Old Gu’s big prize? That was a victory in itself!

The happier Gou Huai felt, the more miserable Gu Tongshu became; the more miserable Old Gu grew, the more it fed Gou Huai’s joy—an unbreakable cycle.

Watching from afar, assistants noticed the two men suddenly bickering heatedly without warning. They instinctively shrank their necks, exchanging nervous glances.

"Who’s stepping in, guys?"

"Not me! I didn’t hear anything. I’m deaf..."

None of them dared approach. With just Gu Tongshu and Su Huai left in close proximity, they dropped all pretenses and spoke freely.

Su Huai defiantly claimed: "I merely proposed raising the stakes. You could choose to accept or decline. If your skill isn’t up to par and you lost the fish, how’s that my fault?"

Gu Tongshu was on the verge of losing it entirely: "Your nonsense condition was purely meant to mess with me! Damn it, if I lose, I owe you a building, and if you lose, you wreck my relationship with my daughter! Either way I’m screwed! Why not just toss me into the lake and be done with it!"

Su Huai spread his hands, feigning innocence: "Come on now, you’re my most respected Uncle Gu..."

"Screw your respect!"

Gu Tongshu exploded with rage, scooped up some mud, balled it up tightly, and hurled it straight at Su Huai.

Of course... he missed.

Su Huai didn’t retaliate, instead shielding his fishing rod: "Hey! Personal attacks are not cool! Another move like that and you’ll lose by default!"

"I don’t even have a rod anymore! What the hell am I supposed to bet at this point?"

Gu Tongshu, rarely seen this agitated, chased Su Huai for over two miles. Not only did he fail to catch him, but he ended up breathless from running.

What was agreed upon as a fair competition in fishing skills ended chaotically...

When the two finally returned to the farmhouse, Gu Jiuyue greeted them sleepily, curious: "Who won?"

"Don’t even talk about it."

Su Huai, visibly vexed, grumbled: "I was about to win, and your dad flipped the table..."

Gu Tongshu, trembling, pointed at him: "You shameless brat! Now you’re making me look bad!"

"Your line broke and you stopped me from continuing—true story, right?"

"You caused my line to break!"

"I was ten meters away. How could I interfere? Don’t blame others for your lack of skill!"

The two squabbled all the way until dinner, refusing to stop. However, no matter how much Gu Jiuyue pried, neither of them mentioned Su Huai’s provocative "poisoned strategy."

Since the bet was just meant to tick Gu Tongshu off, Su Huai didn’t seriously mean it. Gu Tongshu, knowing it was impossible, naturally refrained from raising it and potentially upsetting Jiuyue.

On this point, they were remarkably in sync.

Ultimately, only four small fish were caught between them, and their combined weight barely rounded to two pounds. Making fish stew was out of the question.

Su Huai fussed around the kitchen and whipped up a huge pot of dry-fried chicken instead. At the dinner table, the two men glared daggers at each other as they ate.

Gu Jiuyue, both amused and frustrated, suggested: "How about you two settle it over drinks? Let’s pick a king and a loser right here, and leave other issues for later."

"Drink!"

"Bring it! I’m game!"

When men get competitive, status and position cease to matter—they’re essentially kids again.

Wang Gang brought out a case of Wuliangye liquor. Su Huai and Gu Tongshu sat face to face, ready for their next showdown.

In fishing, Su Huai was no match.

But when it came to drinking... let’s see who gives up first!

Under normal circumstances, Gu Tongshu might have tried slipping away or bluffing once the odds seemed against him. But today, he was thoroughly pissed off and ready to go toe-to-toe.

Perhaps it wasn’t just anger. Maybe there was a mix of disappointment or even fear?

Because, no matter how much he disliked Su Huai, the truth was he couldn’t live without him.

Today, Su Huai blatantly exposed this truth to his face—a challenge that signaled a shift in their dynamic, like a young wolf challenging a wolf king. It was a different kind of confrontation.

What was Gu Tongshu thinking at this moment?

Nobody knew.

But one thing was certain: he got drunk fast.
