Chapter 27: Chapter 26 Sensitive and Fragile Heart (Added for the 6th Alliance @ Male No.11)
"After I finished my freshman year, to be precise, it was after I wrote ’Tombstone Inscription’ that you just saw, that I came to Melbourne to find a new life," Yan Yan answered.
"Did you find it?" This was the question Qi Yi was most concerned about right now.
"Could I just casually tell you?" Yan Yan did not directly answer Qi Yi’s question.
"Then what can you tell me?" Qi Yi asked a bit helplessly but wasn’t in any particular hurry.
"I can tell you, the noodles at Monash University aren’t that tasty," Yan Yan said, looking at Qi Yi with a hint of sympathy.
"Then why did you bring me here?" Qi Yi felt like he was about to be sold out and still have to help count the money.
"Of course, I had to bring you. Pleasures can be enjoyed alone, but hardships must be shared," Yan Yan answered confidently.
"When you wanted to break up with me back then, you didn’t tell me anything. Was it because keeping the breakup to yourself made you happy?" Qi Yi suddenly asked a completely new question, his expression turning serious.
Yan Yan didn’t expect Qi Yi to cut to the chase so quickly.
Aren’t we not even done with breakfast yet? This was unlike Qi Yi’s usual style.
Yan Yan looked at Qi Yi and after several seconds said, "I find myself at a loss for words."
...
Fortunately, the drive from the casino to Monash University wasn’t very far.
So the awkward atmosphere didn’t last long.
Next to the noodle shop in the Union House at Monash University was a pearl milk tea shop, and Qi Yi saw people lining up in front of both.
"You said it’s not good, so why are there so many people lining up?" Qi Yi asked Yan Yan.
"I didn’t say it’s very bad, I said it’s not that tasty. Can’t you have the strict attitude a science student should have?" Yan Yan countered.
"Sorry, before I go for a sex change someday, I’ll be sure to switch my major to liberal arts first," Qi Yi said with a self-deprecating tone.
Qi Yi said that Yan Yan’s style of speaking had changed, but in reality, Qi Yi himself had changed too. The high school Qi Yi would never have spoken with a self-deprecating tone.
After Qi Yi spoke, Yan Yan didn’t immediately respond but instead rested her chin on her hand, looking at Qi Yi with a smile brimming in her eyes.
Qi Yi just quietly watched, not speaking, because Yan Yan’s smile was becoming more and more radiant, and it had been a long time since he had seen such a smile on Yan Yan.
At the beginning of their acquaintance, it was Yan Yan’s smile that Qi Yi fell in love with first.
Thinking of this, Qi Yi remembered another particularly important matter.
"Is everything you wrote in ’Tombstone Inscription’ true?" Qi Yi asked Yan Yan.
"That piece was supposed to be for my eyes only. Although the frequency is a bit low, by nature, my MSN space is still supposed to be a diary. Who would lie in their own diary?" Yan Yan wasn’t quite sure what Qi Yi’s intention was in suddenly asking this question.
"When you wrote that you never expected to face my confession one day, was that sincere?" Qi Yi asked Yan Yan.
Yan Yan found it strange that Qi Yi was not asking about the reason for their breakup, but rather this particular line.
"It was sincere," Yan Yan felt this was the least necessary thing to lie about.
"But I clearly confessed to you only after you encouraged me repeatedly," Qi Yi completely disagreed with Yan Yan’s answer.
"Encouragement? How did I encourage you, it seems like we barely spoke before you confessed. How could I possibly have had the chance to encourage you to confess to me?!" Yan Yan’s face was full of disbelief.
Yan Yan’s astonishment was genuine, without any pretense.
"In our first year of high school, there must have been quite a few girls who liked me, right?" Qi Yi said surprisingly.
"When did your skin get so thick? What do you mean ’in our first year of high school, the girls in our class’? It was during the entire high school period, girls from the whole school, okay!" Yan Yan contradicted herself in speaking.
Although Yan Yan said that he had thick skin, there was no doubt about Qi Yi’s popularity as the school hunk at Wenzhou High School.
However, since the academic atmosphere at Wenzhou High School was strong, and most people prioritized their studies, there wasn’t much of the TV-drama-like scenario with love letters every other day.
"Do you really need to exaggerate that much in your speech? I don’t know about girls from the whole school; I only know that a few girls in our class always stared at me, but they would quickly look away and pretend nothing had happened whenever our eyes met," Qi Yi stated the facts plainly.
"And then? What does that have to do with you saying I encouraged you to confess to me?" Yan Yan was totally clueless about what Qi Yi was talking about.
"Of course, it’s related. Because you were always staring at me too. You can’t deny that, can you?" Qi Yi questioned Yan Yan.
"I admit it, what’s there not to admit?" Yan Yan still didn’t understand.
"But the way you stared at me was different from everyone else. When our eyes met, you never looked away, and you would give me a radiant smile just like the one you just did. You had a voice that could cleanse the soul, and eyes that soothed the spirit. That’s why I first fell in love with you."
Qi Yi always had a way of saying incredibly cheesy things seriously and straightforwardly.
"My dear class leader Qi Yi, I really don’t know how to respond when you talk like that." Yan Yan’s smile was a bit more radiant than before, but it also contained a hint of embarrassment.
"My Miss Yan, you can answer in the most genuine way possible, just as you thought at the time," Qi Yi developed a "habit" of speaking with a mimicking tone after he went to Melbourne.
"Really?" Yan Yan asked doubtfully.
"More real than pearls," Qi Yi repeated a phrase Yan Yan had previously said.
"Well, since I’ve been caught red-handed, I can only confess generously. Among all the girls who stared at you at that time, was I the one who did it most frequently and most brazenly?" Yan Yan asked Qi Yi.
"Yes, you kept giving me affirmative looks, encouraging me to confess to you." Qi Yi would not let Yan Yan off easily; he simply didn’t believe that she hadn’t thought about being confessed to by him at the beginning of their senior year.
"What if I steadfastly deny it?" Yan Yan asked Qi Yi.
"Just give me one reason why you don’t want to admit it," Qi Yi wasn’t insisting that Yan Yan say something.
"A reason? I’m afraid the real reason might hurt your fragile ego that you’ve had since childhood," Yan Yan joked, but she regretted it right after she said it.
Qi Yi’s sensitive and fragile heart was a "secret" between Yan Yan and Qi Yi.
Yan Yan had once seen that heart that no one else could see, but that was when they were still in senior year and dating.
Now, bringing up Qi Yi’s heart in such a manner didn’t seem like a particularly appropriate time.
