Chapter 1183: Someone’s at my door.

"Mhm." Ivy moaned as she stretched her limbs. When she opened her eyes, she jolted at the face hovering over her. "Charlotte, what are you... doing here?"

Charlotte blinked innocently and tilted her head to the side. "Big sister Ivy, you fell asleep on the couch." freewebnσvel.cѳm

"Huh?" Ivy propped her arms to sit up while Charlotte drew her head away. Looking around, all Ivy saw were some papers she was working on last night and the view of the living area. "Oh. Right. I fell asleep here."

She slowly looked at Charlotte and offered a smile. "You’re up early, Charlotte."

"I couldn’t really fall asleep, maybe because it’s hard to adjust." Charlotte smiled awkwardly. "Don’t worry! I’m not talking about the bed or the room being small, but it’s because I haven’t slept in other people’s beds aside from mine."

"You know, the more you try to explain yourself and try to stop any misunderstanding, you end up saying things that might make things worse." Ivy shook her head, slowly bending her knees to get out of the couch. "Are you hungry? I’m gonna make you breakfast. Wait here."

"I’m not hungry, big sister Ivy," Charlotte reassured. "I’m okay."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Very well."

"But big sister, why did you fall asleep here?" Charlotte wondered, knowing Ivy had her own bed to sleep in.

"To be honest..." Ivy glanced at the papers scattered on the coffee table and smiled weakly. "... I don’t know."

Ivy started cleaning up the table, stacking up the files on top of each other. It wasn’t like she didn’t know the reason. It was just that she knew if she didn’t sleep here, she wouldn’t hear anyone if someone intruded in her place in the middle of the night.

"I’ll help you!" Charlotte quickly slid down from the couch to the floor, helping Ivy pick up the paper. When she picked up one document, a pistol came into view that made her freeze.

"Oh." Ivy cleared her throat, casually reached for the pistol, and tucked it away to the side. "I kept it in case I would need it."

Charlotte pursed her lips as she slowly gazed at Ivy. "Big sister, do you think I’m hostile?"

"No."

"Then why is there a gun lying within your reach?"

"Because you’re an Oxley and from what I heard, your mother doesn’t even know you’re here," explained Ivy with a deep sigh. "If she finds out you are missing, then I wouldn’t be surprised they would come in here in the middle of the night. I need to protect myself, you know?"

"Oh..."

"Charlotte, don’t you really have any idea of how people see your family?"

Charlotte pursed her lips into a thin line. "But I didn’t do anything to them."

"Did Hera do anything to your mother?" Ivy tilted her head to the side. "I’m saying Hera also hadn’t done anything directly to me. But what I heard is enough for me to conclude."

"What happened by not judging the book by its cover?"

"That... doesn’t apply in here because lives are on the line." Ivy sported a helpless smile. "If we just mindlessly trust that phrase, we might as well shoot ourselves in the head because it’s gonna happen whether or not we do it."

Ivy spent the night with this young lady and, from what she could tell, Charlotte was unbelievably naive. Charlotte had this idea that everything could be talked about peacefully. That if one asked nicely, things would settle on their own.

As much as Ivy hated to break it to her, she had to tell the young lady some real-life lessons.

"I heard you wanted to talk to Hera," said Ivy gently. "If that happened, you better think of something to tell her and agree with you, because if you don’t, Hera will use you the way she sees fit. I don’t know her personally, but from what I heard, she’s a real monster who doesn’t care to be the worst villain if that is the only way to protect her own."

A wry smile appeared on her as she continued. "You might be cousins, but you’ve never known each other until now."

"I’ve known about her for a long time."

"But she doesn’t." Ivy squeezed her hand. "For you, she’s family, but for her, you... are nothing but the daughter of the person who took her own family away. And now, what your mother is doing is threatening Hera Cruel to take away the family she had now."

"Unless you can think of anything to stop that, please don’t get in their way." Her hold on Charlotte’s hand trembled, knowing Tiger was also deeply involved in this situation. It scared her and even though she didn’t have a good impression of Hera, Tiger was on Hera’s side.

So, even if Ivy felt sorry for Charlotte, deep in her heart, she was on Tiger’s side. She would pray for his safety and even his victory without regrets.

Ivy and Charlotte stared at each other with the latter frowning deeply. Just then, they heard the doorbell ring. Ivy patted Charlotte’s hand before telling her she had to answer the door. Out of habit, Ivy went to the monitor mounted on the wall to check her front door.

"Delivery from Mr. Zhu," announced the person outside, showing her a small package in his hand.

"A package from Dominic?" Ivy hesitated to open the door, knowing Dominic wouldn’t send anything to her early in the morning. But then, she heard her phone ring. Rushing back to the living area, Ivy picked up the call the second she saw Dominic’s name on it.

"Dom, did you send me a package?" she asked as soon as the line connected.

"Yes."

"Oh, good!" she intoned, sighing in relief. "I thought for a second there’s a bad guy outside my front door."

Ivy chuckled as she walked toward the door, still holding the phone in front of her ear.

"I sent you a device and someone might call you," said Dominic while Ivy listened as she answered the door. "You know who I am talking about, right?"

"Dom."

"Ivy, save your thanks for later because I have another thing to tell you —"

"Someone’s at my door." Ivy gulped, standing still at the delivery man outside her door with a gun pointed at her abdomen. Before she could say anything, Dominic heard another person’s voice before the line disconnected.

"Turn the damn phone off and get inside."
