"What rift?" Jan asked, voicing what everyone else had been thinking. Tension crackled in the air. All eyes turned to Eccar, who stood at the front, unwavering, ready for whatever emerged.

"It looks like a rift opened from another world… or some unknown dimension," Eccar said casually, as if he were commenting on the weather. But for the adventurers behind him — all of them human — this was far from ordinary. Something like this was the kind of catastrophe usually reserved for Archmages and royal soldiers. Dimensional rifts weren't supposed to be their problem.

"Don't worry," Eccar continued with a shrug. "We just have to fight like always."

Then he glanced back, finally noticing their pale faces and stiffened bodies. Fear gripped them. He sighed, then smiled, his voice softening. "It's not as bad as you think. I know you all can do it."

His words, calm and steady as always, worked like a balm. Jan straightened, eyes flicking to his allies. He gave a firm nod.

"We can do it," Jan said, his voice sharper now.

The others nodded immediately, their bond forming fast because it was forged by urgency and trust. It was the first time these two parties had ever worked together but italready felt like they'd shared years of battle.

They moved in sync and able to trusted each other's rhythm. Mark, the leader of the group from Astoria, noticed it too and silently praised Jan's natural leadership.

Then Eccar's voice cut through the mist again.

"Something's coming out from the rift. Prepare yourselves."

Jan stepped forward without hesitation, bow already drawn. "I'll try to kill it."

"You can see it?" Eccar asked, genuinely curious. His Dragon Eyes let him pierce the fog but as far as he knew Jan didn't possess such a thing.

Jan's eyes lit with a sudden bright blue glow. "I have some Magic to enhance my vision," he explained.

"Oh. Alright," Eccar nodded, slightly impressed.

Through the dense mist, Jan's enchanted sight cut clearly to the rift ahead. A creature was emerging — pale grey, disturbingly thin, with elongated limbs and a single glowing green eye in its forehead. His lips curled in disgust.

"Damn… that thing is ugly," he muttered.

He loosed the arrow without hesitation. It soared clean through the fog, brushing past leaves and branches, and struck dead center in the creature's lone eye.

A high-pitched, distorted, and unnatural shriek rang out. It pierced the silence, sent chills up every spine. Worse still, only Jan could see the creature, leaving the rest haunted by the invisible scream.

"Is it dead?" Mark asked tightly.

"No," Jan said grimly. "It's tougher than the beasts we faced before."

Mark swallowed hard and gave a quick glance to his team. They nodded back, already bracing themselves. He could feel that the creature was coming fast.

And he was right. The shrieking thing dashed toward them through the mist, closing the distance with horrifying speed.

"It's coming!" Jan shouted, launching two more arrows in quick succession. Both hit — one in the chest, the other in the abdomen — drawing pale blood, but the creature didn't slow.

Then it burst from the fog.

Now they could all see the tall and twisted creature with its limbs too long and its skin like wet clay, and that one bloodied, blinking green eye. It hissed as it charged.

Hund and Thorne, the front-line fighters, leapt forward without hesitation. Eccar stepped aside, letting them pass.

Their blades slashed down in unison, aimed at the creature's head and struck true.

But it didn't fall.

Though their swords dug into its flesh and pale red blood poured out the creature didn't buckle. It raised its elongated arms and blocked them with unnatural strength. Its mouth opened unnaturally wide and its teeth bared in a soundless snarl.

Then, from the backline, Esther raised her hand. Her voice was calm but clear, slicing through the chaos.

"Hold it—!"

A blazing firebolt erupted from her fingers, moving high through the mist and slamming directly into the creature's already-wounded eye. It struck with a wet sizzling impact.

The creature shrieked again, the noise even more unbearable than before, a horrible distortion of pain and rage. But this time, they noticed something.

Its body flinched violently, knees buckling for a split second as if the pain in its eye reverberated through its whole frame.

"That's it," Jan snapped, already raising his bow. "Target its eye!"

Hund and Thorne didn't wait for further command. The moment the order left Jan's lips, they surged forward with purpose with blades flashing. They didn't aim to kill only to hold it still and let the rest deal the fatal blows.

They attacked its sides, shoulders, and arms, keeping it from retreating or dodging. Their timing was flawless, moving like two halves of a single thought.

Kaela joined in next, darting forward like a blur of wind and steel. Her twin daggers gleamed with enchantment and with sharp clean movements she sliced across the creature's knees and ankles.

The creature lashed out, its claws flailing in a wide arc, but the three melee fighters were too fast and too coordinated. In seconds, the creature's legs and arms were riddled with deep cuts, its balance faltering.

Blood splattered the ground and it finally buckled.

Then came the strike that ended it.

Selene stepped forward, her gloved hands crackling with fierce arcs of lightning. Energy gathered between her palms until she thrust both hands forward in a blinding flash.

A bolt of lightning shot from her fingertips and struck the creature's head dead-on. It convulsed violently, its body locking in place as electricity surged through its nervous system.

The lightning lingered in its head for few seconds, dancing in its eye that start to melting, and for a few long seconds, the only sound was the crackling hum of Magic.

Then, silence.

The creature collapsed. Its limbs twisted, smoke rising from its skull, and lay still.

The rift behind it pulsed once more, then quieted… for now.

No one said anything at first. They just stood there, panting, eyes sharp and their weapons blades still raised.

"Its not over. Don't let your guard down," Eccar said, noticing something else is coming our from the portal.
