I Am the Only Fertile Woman in the Game-Chapter 224: Heart of the Leopard
Upon hearing this, Qiao Suisui felt as if her throat was blocked, unable to make any sound. Her lips trembled as if she wanted to say something, but she found all her words drowned by tears, unable to express even a fraction of what was in her heart.
At this moment, she felt as though her heart was being stitched up with dense, tiny needles, each prick a stabbing pain.
She subconsciously covered her chest, and Carl, no longer able to contain himself at the sight, scooped her up in his arms, casting a cold glance at Sang Yan and Zong Fang, his face barely concealing his suppressed anger.
"Let’s talk after we get back," he said.
Since Carl’s residence was in the Federation and was the closest, the four of them went there.
This was Qiao Suisui’s first visit to the home she shared with Carl, but at this moment she had no mind to care about the layout or the furniture.
The three of them discussed the events of the past decade with her, each consciously skirting around the details, but under Qiao Suisui’s skilled probing, she still learned many specifics. The rest of the details they simply refused to divulge, no matter how she asked.
The living room fell into dead silence.
Sang Yan was the first to attempt changing the subject, "While I was at the Freedom Alliance, I tried to find the person in this photo."
He produced a group photo, the very one he and Qiao Suisui had found in the room where the Archbishop was assassinated.
"You must know this man," he said.
Qiao Suisui frowned at the somewhat familiar face, listening as Sang Yan revealed, "His real name is Li Po, who later went by the alias Dr. Li."
She looked at the man in surprise, not having noticed before, but now that Sang Yan had shared the findings of his investigation, she could tell that this man was clearly a younger Dr. Li. However, because the person in the photo and the real Dr. Li differed so much in age and temperament, she hadn’t recognized him immediately.
Qiao Suisui quickly caught onto a piece of information.
"So the Archbishop was assassinated by Dr. Li, and both he and Li were members of the Rebel Army back then, but after surviving, they went their separate ways and hadn’t seen each other for many years. But why would Dr. Li want to kill the Archbishop?" she asked.
Zong Fang replied, "As far as I know, the former leader of the Federation had received insider information from the Rebel Army and only then carried out the surprise attack. During the operation, not only was Dante Connor killed in front of everyone, but a portion of the Rebel Army was also captured, and Anubis was arrested while trying to save the remaining members. He stayed behind to cover their retreat, giving the others a chance to live."
This was also why Sang Yan was committed to settling the remaining members of the Rebel Army, for he knew these people had been saved at the cost of Anubis’ life, and Anubis held a special place for Qiao Suisui.
Anubis was a pain Qiao Suisui was unwilling to confront; now, after a series of devastating news, she seemed to have lost all sensation.
"So Dr. Li is a traitor," she concluded.
Sang Yan nodded.
If it hadn’t been for his betrayal, Anubis might not have ended up in danger.
Qiao Suisui raised her hand to press her brow, Carl immediately squatting in front of her, asking anxiously, "Is your head hurting?"
"I’m a bit tired, I want to rest," she replied.
Zong Fang hesitated, holding back his words.
Carl immediately said, "I’ll stay with you."
Sang Yan said nothing, but his gaze remained fixed on her.
Qiao Suisui shook her head, "I want to be alone for a while."
Carl took her upstairs and settled her in the master bedroom. Reluctant to leave, he was ultimately pushed out by Qiao Suisui.
She lay in bed, covered her head with the blanket, and curled up inside, weeping silently.
She kept telling herself that things would change, could change, must change.
But her emotions needed release, and as she cried, she fell asleep.
Carl stood motionless by the door.
After a long while, his ears twitched, and he opened the door quietly, stepping inside.
Carl carefully lifted the blanket, his first action to check her breathing.
Once he was sure she was alright, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Then he transformed into his beast form, lay beside the bed, resting his head on his front paws like a large cat, quietly keeping watch over her.
Downstairs.
Zong Fang was lost in thought when Sang Yan asked him, "What do we do next? Such a blow, for Suisui, is the most damaging."
One after another, three people had died; anyone would struggle to accept that.
Zong Fang knew this all too well, which was why he kept delaying.
The circumstances with Sikoses and Anubis were not the same. Qiao Suisui held a sort of fledgling attachment to him, and Zong Fang knew that no matter how much he loved her, he could never replace that part of Sikoses.
Leberli had also been with her from the start, being especially attentive to her needs. Now that both were gone, Zong Fang did not know how to help her move on from her grief.
Distract her attention?
With this thought, he suddenly glanced at Sang Yan. freēnovelkiss.com
Perhaps some new faces could temporarily make her forget?
The next second, Zong Fang immediately emitted a chill, feeling like he had lost his mind for starting to push her towards someone else. He was never Sikoses and couldn’t be as magnanimous.
Sang Yan was taken aback by Zong Fang’s look, not understanding why, all of a sudden, he seemed so threatening.
...
Qiao Suisui had slept enough and woke up in the middle of the night.
She felt a bit thirsty, so she sat up in bed. The lighting was dim, and as soon as she moved, a hand wrapped around her waist.
Zong Fang embraced her from behind and asked in a soft voice, "Want some water?"
She ’hmm’ed in response, and the man got out of bed to pour her some water. She felt her eyes were a bit swollen and thought about getting up to wash her face, but stepped on something warm and furry at the bedside.
Qiao Suisui was startled.
The leopard raised its head to nudge her shin, wagging its tail like a dog.
She called out "Carl," and the leopard nudged her again.
Just as she was about to ask why he was in his beast form, she noticed him stretching his head over, ceaselessly rubbing his ear against her hand.
"Do you want me to touch your ears?"
The leopard licked her fingertips.
Qiao Suisui smiled slightly. She understood Carl was trying to cheer her up in this manner.
She reached out to touch his ears and then scratched under his chin. The leopard closed its eyes contentedly, docile like a cat.
Zong Fang returned with a cup of warm water, only to see her sitting at the edge of the bed, her tender little feet on the leopard’s body, rubbing the leopard’s face with both hands.
He walked over and handed her a cup of warm water. Seeing her take only a couple of sips, worried that she was dehydrated from crying, he said, "Drink it all up."
Then he bathed her, made sure she ate something, and only then let her go to play.
Qiao Suisui rested her head on the leopard’s belly and lay on the carpet. Seeing Zong Fang almost done with his chores, she said, "I have something I want to discuss with you."
Zong Fang came over and sat down, knowing it must be related to Sikoses and the others.
Indeed, Qiao Suisui said, "I want to go back to the past and change the outcome."
No sooner had the words left her mouth than she felt her head go light, the next second cradled by a large hand.
It turned out Carl had changed back into human form.
"What do you mean ’go back to the past’? You want to leave again?"
Zong Fang was calmer than him, but his expression was also somewhat strained.
